WASHINGTON,
D.C. – Today, Congressman Walter
B. Jones (NC-3) cosponsored a resolution (H. Res. 476) in support of individual
state authority over academic standards and assessments. The resolution
denounces the U.S. Department of Education’s practice of coercion and
overreach into state education systems by tying federal funding to the adoption
of the Common Core State Standards.
“Under the Tenth Amendment, authority over our education
systems is reserved for the individual states, not the federal government,
making the Department of Education’s overreach in this area clearly
unconstitutional,” said Congressman Jones. “Furthermore, serious concerns
have been raised with the quality of education provided under the Common Core
Standards.”
