Letter to the Editor: Far Right, by CCTA Education Chairman, Nancy Murdoch

Letter: Far right

Published: Wednesday, October 30, 2013 in Sun Journal New Bern

On a number of occasions the Sun Journal has identified certain members of the Craven County GOP as being “far right.” Perhaps that type of label sells newspapers, but exactly what does “far right” mean? According to Wikipedia: “The terms far right, or extreme right, describe the broad range of political groups and ideologies usually taken to be further to the right of the mainstream center-right on the traditional left-right spectrum. Far right politics commonly involves support for social inequality and social hierarchy, elements of social conservatism and opposition to most forms of liberalism and socialism. Both terms are also used to describe Nazi and fascist movements, and other groups who hold extreme nationalist, chauvinist, xenophobic, racist, religious fundamentalist or reactionary views. The most extreme right-wing movements have pursued oppression and genocide against groups of people on the basis of their alleged inferiority.”

After reading that definition, one might assume the Craven County GOP has been invaded by the Ku Klux Klan (who were Democrats) or some other such misguided group. However, that’s just not the case. The “faction” consists of individuals who believe every Republican in Craven County should have a voice as to who we support, we should hold our elected leaders accountable, and principles are important.

Different scales have been used over the years to describe political beliefs. Many of us ascribe to the belief that on one end of that scale is anarchy and on the other is tyranny (what our Founders believe by the way). We prescribe to the balanced center, as we know that men are not angels and some government is required for a civilized society. In fact, “We The People” made a social compact to give the government enumerated powers as outlined in the Constitution, because government is instituted by the people and they derive their just powers from us. If the government follows the rules laid out in the Constitution, the social compact stays intact.  However, many of us in the GOP believe the social compact is broken, and we believe it depends on those among us who value the 4,400 words of the Constitution to get us back on track. Because we do not have blind allegiance to the GOP and we are aware that some in our own party have abused their power, we are attempting to restore the social compact to its rightful balance.

The First Amendment of the Bill of Rights protects the freedom of the press, among other things.  We implore the Sun Journal and all other media to use measured words, and to refrain from using slanted (and often incorrect) verbiage when reporting. Opinions belong on the editorial page, not the front page.

Nancy Murdoch, Havelock

An angle for the NCGA to save us from ObamaCare?

The Daily Haymaker

The recently completed Nullify Now gathering in Raleigh caused some people to sit up and take notice.  The mainstream media, of course, has been mocking it for all it’s worth.  But many folks have seen the concept of nullification as a valid tactic for fighting federal government overreach.

A movement is afoot in the country to compel state governments — in cases where it is believed that the federal government has overreached and exceeded its constitutional authority — to simply ignore decrees from Washington.   South Carolina has already been pushing the idea in resisting ObamaCare.

Now, some grassroots leaders North Carolina are making overtures to Republicans in Raleigh to utilize the concept of nullification in blocking the implementation of ObamaCare in North Carolina.  Craven County Republicans got the ball rolling with this recent resolution:

A Resolution to the North Carolina General Assembly to Declare the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare) Null and Void and Unenforceable in the State of North Carolina

Whereas; The Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act bill originated in the US Senate.
Whereas; The United States Supreme Court Ruled the PPACA constitutional as a tax in the case of National Federation of Independent Business vs Sebelius.

Craven GOP -Thom Tillis spat ends in Craven chairman’s resignation

The Daily Haymaker

There has been quite a bit of internal drama with Craven County’s Republicans during the last year.  They've voted to censure state House speaker and US Senate candidate Thom Tillis for his efforts to meddle in area GOP primaries. Local party chairman Paul Hill — aided by state GOP officials — raised objections about this move.  Local party leaders ordered that a letter of censure be sent to Tillis and the state party.  Censure supporters on the ground in Craven County suggest that Hill balked at signing and mailing off the letter – a direct conflict with the instructions by the executive committee.

The perceived failure to comply with the censure vote — as well as other unrelated concerns about local party fundraising and operations management — led to some local party leaders bringing charges against Hill and moving for his removal from office.

Chairman Hill was allowed a hearing and afforded an opportunity to defend himself.  But this week, Hill chose to resign his post as chairman of the Craven County GOP.  By acclamation, longtime local activist Carl Mischka was voted in by the executive committee as Hill’s replacement.

A Craven GOP leader — who happens to be a friend of this site — tells me everyone is breathing a sigh of relief now that this is over:

This is the second error filled liberal hit piece written by the Sun Journal New Bern.  Wonder who invited reporter Sue Book to attend and who fed her misinformation.  Neither the "Tea Party" or Coastal Carolina Taxpayers Association had anything to do with these events.  Like all RINOS and LIBERTARDS--blame anyone rather than acknowledge the facts, Paul Hill's incompetence and party hack antics!

Craven GOP ‘tea party’ wing asserts influence
A far right faction of Craven County Republican Party, many of whom say they are not in the “tea party,” now has the local GOP at least sipping tea.
Actions at a Thursday night executive party meeting at which Carl Mishka was elected chairman, concluded with a plea for unity but several longtime strong county GOP leaders say they see real division that probably doesn't have a quick fix.
At the meeting, Paul Hill resigned as chairman in letter read in his absence by GOP Vice Chairman Scott Dacey, who also serves as chairman of Craven County Board of Commissioners.
Immediately, executive committee precinct committee chairman Hal James, whose precinct organizational efforts filled all but a handful of executive committee seats with “tea party” conservatives, offered a single motion to accept the resignation and fill the vacant post with Mishka, a six-year New Bern Republican from Orange County, Calif.

Democrats Calling for Early Voting on SUNDAYS!!!!

Note:  CCTA is a non partisan organization.  We do not endorse any particular candidate or political party.  News items are presented for you the reader to help you become informed and reach your own conclusions.

Dear Registered Republicans,

The Democrats have made a formal request for the 2012 Early Voting to have the polling locations open on Sundays for the General Elections. This would be in addition to the regular scheduled days. Currently Early Voting will be available13 days at five locations and all 27 Precinct Voting locations on Election Day. Voters who know they will be unable to vote at any of these times have the option to obtain an absentee ballot. This is very clear that anyone interested in voting has ample opportunity to do so.

Voting days and times now scheduled are:

Oct, 18, 19, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 29, 30, 31, Nov 1, 2: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (there is a proposal to change the closing time to 6:00 PM); Nov 3: 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM; and Nov 6: 6:30 AM – 7:30 PM

Voting polls have never been open on Sundays which is a religious day of rest. As noted above there is ample opportunity for individuals to vote. The Craven GOP does not support this initiative and added cost. If you support our effort, please take a moment and write a short email explaining your concerns to the Craven County Board of Elections eburridge@cravencountync.gov If you prepare an email to address your concerns, please ensure you forward your response prior to August 5.

We want success in the 2012 General Elections, done professionally and honestly. This will require hard work and working together as a team. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Chuck Tyson
Chairman, CCGOP
