Pro-Gun Control Senators Consider Amending Background Check Bill to Ensure Passage

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senators backing gun control are discussing ways to revise the defeated Senate background check bill in order to help win the votes they need to resuscitate the measure.


Among the changes they might consider are limiting the fees buyers would pay at gun shows, adding provisions dealing with the mentally ill and altering language extending the background check requirement to all online sales, senators said Tuesday.

Supporters fell five votes short when the Senate defeated legislation last month that would have extended required federal background checks to more buyers.

That vote, four months after the massacre of 20 first-graders and six educators at a school in Newtown, Conn., was a defeat for President Barack Obama and gun control advocates. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has promised to revisit the issue, perhaps by early summer.

Gun control groups have stepped up advertising, attendance at lawmakers’ town hall meetings and other forms of pressure in an effort to convince at least five senators that they risk electoral defeat unless they reverse themselves and back the effort. Once senators make that political calculation, many lawmakers and lobbyists believe the legislation would have to be changed so those senators could justify switching their earlier vote.


“Clearly this bill is going to have to look differently to allow members to face their constituents and explain why they changed their mind,” said Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn.

“This is a pretty common-sense bill. I don’t know how you make it any more common sense, except redefine some areas,” said Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who wrote the measure with Sen. Patrick Toomey, R-Pa.

STOP FEINSTEINS GUN BAN!! Call your Senators!

I spoke with Burr's office today and he is going to vote against the assault weapons ban making it's way around Washington. Hagan is another matter. Yesterday she had her office closed (how convenient) to take calls; today she is open. Please contact her Washington office if you haven't done so and request she vote no on Feinsteins resolution at 202-224-6342. I also called her Greensboro office (main office in NC) at 336-333-5311. Hagan plays to the liberals in Wake Forest, Chapel Hill, Raleigh etc. She needs to hear from us.

When someone tells you it doesn't make a difference let me tell you this. These offices count calls especially when they are getting hammered on a particular issue.

Gun Owners Mad As Hell And Will Not Take It!

This is about far more than guns and who has them. This is about slavery to the state. Pure and simple!

There is a purge of Congress in the offing. It will be historic in its magnitude.

Allow me to be as clear as I possibly can about this because the disconnect between the people of America and their government has become so complete, the distance between the citizen and the government has become so broad, that Washington is hearing only a faint whisper (If they hear anything at all!) coming from those of us outside the beltway.

So let me say this clearly, loudly, and in a declarative manner: Attention Senators and US Representatives: If you vote for the new Assault Weapons Ban your political career in the US Congress is OVER. That is O V E R! Complete, finished, ended, kaput!

For the past few days I have been going over and over Senator Diane Feinstein’s proposal for a new Assault Weapons Ban and it reads like some sort of “edict” handed down from the politburo in old Soviet Socialist Russia. (The politburo is the chief executive and political committee of the Communist Party.)

Summary of 2013 Feinstein Assault

Weapons Legislation

Bans the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of:

 120 specifically-named firearms

 Certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, shotguns that can accept a detachable magazine and have one military characteristic

 Semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds

Strengthens the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and various state bans by:

 Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test

 Eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from the characteristics test

 Banning firearms with “thumbhole stocks” and “bullet buttons” to address attempts to “work around” prior bans   Bans large-capacity ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.

Protects legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by:

 Grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment

 Exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes and

 Exempting antique, manually-operated, and permanently disabled weapons

Requires that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act, to include:

o Background check of owner and any transferee;

o Type and serial number of the firearm;

o Positive identification, including photograph and fingerprint;

o Certification from local law enforcement of identity and that possession would not violate State or local law; and

o Dedicated funding for ATF to implement registration
