House OKs Hatteras beach-driving bill

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday that would allow more beach driving access to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., will go to the Senate. The Senate took no action on a similar bill in 2012 after it had passed the Republican-controlled House.

North Carolina Sens. Richard Burr, a Republican, and Kay Hagan, a Democrat, back the measure.

It was at a restaurant in Birkdale Village, in a packed room at a U.S. Senate forum sponsored by a group called Lake Norman Conservatives. Three of the invited Republican candidates were there.

Missing: N.C. House Speaker Thom Tillis, who lives just 10 minutes away. He was at a Durham fundraiser.

The mainstream media could do the right thing and cover the upcoming Senate contest in terms of the issues. Inform the voters, keep their readers / viewers up to date — that kind of thing. Or they could be lazy and cover it in terms of the dollars chase.  

Looking at the dollars chase, a troubling development rises to the surface.  The two candidates anointed by the media and the establishment — Kay Hagan and Thom Tillis — have campaign treasuries stuffed with large contributions from out-of-state and shadowy sources.  If you’ve got six figures coming in to you from large, shadowy and out-of-state interests, who are you going to listen to when the rubber meets the road?

#NCSEN: Brannon picks up major Tea Party endorsement

News broke last night that a second major Tea Party organization here in North Carolina has endorsed Republican US Senate candidate Greg Brannon.

Moore Tea Citizens – one of the largest and most influential grassroots organizations in the state — gave its blessings to the Cary OB-GYN’s effort to unseat incumbent Kay Hagan Monday evening.  MTC president Miriam Chu announced the news to Brannon while he was in town opening his new Southern Pines campaign headquarters.

Well, being the southern gentlemen we are here, we thought we’d take a moment to help out our state’s junior US senator in this area.  Cecilia Boone of Austin, TX is listed on Senator Sock Puppet’s financial disclosure form as not having an employer and being “a homemaker.”Actually, a simple Google search helped me discover that Ms. Boone — who donated $2600 to Hagan on May 7 — is the chairman of Planned Parenthood Foundation of America.  Yep — ground zero for The Abortion Fan Club.™

A different look at NC’s Senate race

North Carolina political consultant John Davis says he sees a Kay Hagan-Thom Tillis showdown in the U.S. Senate race and expects Tillis to win.

In his recent subscriber-only Political Report, Davis said it’s in the numbers. For starters, he says, the landscape isn’t good for Hagan. No N.C. Democrat has won a second term in the U.S. Senate since 1968, the party is “in shambles,” polls show it tied, midterms aren’t kind to the White House and Hagan told the lie of the year when it came to healthcare.

“So, if it comes down to a race between Sen. Kay Hagan and Speaker Thom Tillis, it is highly likely that the two equally capable and equally funded combatants will be surrounded by equally savvy consultants and have the backing of equally malicious super PACs,” he writes. “Which brings me back to those facts and numbers (above), and why I believe that Thom Tillis is likely to upset Kay Hagan in North Carolina’s U.S. Senate race.”

Yep.  That title pretty well sums up most of the folks who forked over cash to US Senator Kay Hagan’s campaign war chest.  It’s a little hard to track Hagan’s campaign money.  She’s got at least five different entities raising money on her behalf — The Longleaf Pine PAC, Kay Hagan Senate Victory (KHSV), The Hagan Victory Fund, Hagan for US Senate, and the Hagan Coons Victory Fund.

KHSV is a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) operation.  The Hagan Victory Fund and the Hagan Coons Victory Fund are both being run out of the same Washington, DC office building.  (“Coons” is Chris Coons, who was elected by Delaware voters to replace Joe Biden in the US Senate.)  Hagan for US Senate is based in Greensboro, and the Longleaf Pine PAC is Hagan’s leadership PAC.

The Most Expensive Senate Race of the Cycle — So Far

About halfway through the midterm election cycle, North Carolina is on pace to host the most expensive Senate race of 2014.

But the Tar Heel State shouldn’t necessarily get too comfortable in the top spot.

Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan’s re-election battle there is one of at least four Senate contests where outside spending has already eclipsed the $2 million mark. The others include the re-election races of Sens. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., and Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

The potential for Republicans to win back the Senate majority, combined with the media-market makeup of the competitive landscape, has invited a superfluity of early spending. Republicans need a net gain of six seats next year, and most of the competitive races are for Democrat-held seats in less populous states

#NCSEN Brannon: Stop hijacking the term ‘conservative’

Cary physician Greg Brannon, Tea Party favorite and one of the leading contenders for the GOP nomination for US Senate, told a Moore County audience last night about one of his pet peeves:

”Boy, this word ‘conservative’ is quite popular.  Every election year, you see and hear it all over the place.  A lot of people on the campaign trail talk about how conservative they are. But after they get elected, they forget about all of that stuff.  Thom Tillis has the word ‘conservative’ all over his campaign literature and web site.  But he’s voted for and supported toll roads, government-funded light rail, mandates and common core.  If that’s what passes for conservative these days, count me out.  My view on conservatism is one of strict adherence to The Constitution as well as stripping power from the government and giving it back to the people.”

Brannon also showed some skepticism about Tillis’ claims of being a fighter against ObamaCare in the legislature:

“Sure, the general assembly blocked the establishment of a state exchange.  But due to a lack of familiarity with The Constitution, they left the door open for federal exchanges.  Legislatures in Alabama and South Carolina passed laws making it illegal for anyone to come into their states and try to implement ObamaCare. If those states could do that, why couldn’t our leaders here in North Carolina do the same? Stopping short in the fight against ObamaCare allowed the feds to come in here, get ObamaCare rolling, force average premiums to increase 300 percent, and cause a whole lot of people to lose their insurance. Our legislators owe the people of North Carolina a good explanation as to why they stopped short of finishing that fight.”

Greg Brannon: BOTH of NC’s senators need to join the fight to defund ObamaCare

THE DAILY HAYMAKER 

Polling shows two-thirds to three-quarters of North Carolinians expressing serious dissatisfaction with ObamaCare.  The North Carolina General Assembly has voted to refuse federal money earmarked for funding health insurance exchanges – a key component of ObamaCare. There is clear evidence that fear and uncertainty about the law  is slowing the economic recovery and causing businesses to put off hiring decisions.  Yet. both of North Carolina’s senators — Kay Hagan (D) and Richard Burr (R) — are sitting on the sidelines in DC while others lead a fight to defund this looming bureaucratic train wreck.

Kay Hagan was a proud cheerleader for ObamaCare – taking great pains to tells us all how good it is going to be for us.  Burr has described the fight to defund ObamaCare as “the dumbest idea.”

Dr. Greg Brannon, a GOP candidate for US Senate in 2014, told roughly 100 supporters at a gathering in Moore County Friday night that Burr and Hagan were failing in their roles as  ”ambassadors” for the people of North Carolina by refusing to join an effort, led by Utah senator Mike Lee (R), to cut funding for ObamaCare out of any continuing resolution that may be passed to keep the federal government running through the end of September:

“Party loyalty — loyalty to your caucus leaders — should have nothing to do with your position on this legislation.  The rule of law should be the main concern here.  There is nothing in The Constitution that empowers the federal government to sink its claws into our health care system and intrude into our lives like this. Our leaders in DC should be deferring to The Constitution, looking at the damage this bill is already doing to our economy and our freedom, and listening to the people back home.  Kay Hagan and Richard Burr need to do the right thing for the people of North Carolina and sign on to Senator Lee’s effort to pull ObamaCare funding.”

Kay Hagan thinks the IRS NEEDS more power & stuff to do

In Washington, pols from both major parties are trampling each other to make it to a microphone and /or camera to denounce the Internal Revenue Service. In case you’ve been visiting other planets in our solar system the past couple of days — allegations have surfaced that the IRS has been targeting conservative and Tea Party groups and leaders since 2010.

Democrats are telling us they are “shocked” by all of this stuff they are hearing about their friends, the tax collectors. That’s funny. In 2010, The New York Times reported that Democrats in the Senate were demanding IRS reviews of conservative political groups. Kay Hagan, our state’s Democrat senator who is affectionately known in some parts as Chuck Schumer’s sock puppet ™, has been in the Senate since 2008. I can’t find any comment from her about any of this stuff until today, when she reportedly described the whole saga as “disturbing and troubling.”

I spoke with Burr's office today and he is going to vote against the assault weapons ban making it's way around Washington. Hagan is another matter. Yesterday she had her office closed (how convenient) to take calls; today she is open. Please contact her Washington office if you haven't done so and request she vote no on Feinsteins resolution at 202-224-6342. I also called her Greensboro office (main office in NC) at 336-333-5311. Hagan plays to the liberals in Wake Forest, Chapel Hill, Raleigh etc. She needs to hear from us.

When someone tells you it doesn't make a difference let me tell you this. These offices count calls especially when they are getting hammered on a particular issue.

North Carolina as the Blueprint for a Red-State Resurgence

With party unity, good candidates and an inclusive message, conservative campaigns can prosper.

Democrats across the country are celebrating the re-election of President Obama and the pickup of two seats in the Senate and eight in the House. But in two formerly Democratic states, Republicans have much to be joyful about.

The GOP victory in North Carolina included the governorship, veto-proof majorities in the state Senate and House, control of 54 of the state's 100 counties, three new U.S. House seats, and a pivotal seat on the state Supreme Court. All this lifted Mitt Romney to a narrow victory in a state that Mr. Obama won in 2008.

It is premature to declare North Carolina a reliably red state, but Republicans are "positioned to be the dominant party in North Carolina for at least a decade if not beyond," says GOP consultant Marc Rotterman.

The same is true in Arkansas, the second-best state for Republicans in last month's election. Both states offer Republicans an opportunity to unseat Democratic senators in 2014. In Arkansas, the GOP trend has moved so quickly that Sen. Mark Pryor, who had no Republican opponent in 2008, is now considered highly vulnerable. In North Carolina, Sen. Kay Hagen, when matched against an unspecified Republican challenger, led just 45%-41% in a Public Policy Polling survey last month. The last Democratic senator to win re-election in North Carolina was Sam Ervin in 1968.

Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act - Vote Agreed to (60-36, 4 Not Voting)--The Senate gave final approval to the agreement to extend the Social Security payroll tax rate cut, which was reduced from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent last year, through the end of 2012. The bill also extends certain unemployment benefits and Medicare physician payment rates through the end of the year. The president is expected to sign the bill into law. Sen. Richard Burr voted NO and Sen. Kay Hagan voted YES.

RECENT HOUSE VOTES
Protecting Investment in Oil Shale the Next Generation of Environmental, Energy, and Resource Security Act - Vote Passed (237-187, 10 Not Voting). The House passed the first part of the surface transportation authorization bill, which has been divided into three parts. This part deals with energy and would use oil and gas revenue to fund transportation projects.  Rep. Walter Jones voted YES.
