Carolina Rising Releases Statewide Robo-Call Alerting The Public
About Roy Cooper’s Power Grab
Cooper Abuses Power to Keep Power, Punish Opponents
(Raleigh)  Carolina Rising is today calling hundreds of thousands of North Carolina voters informing them of Roy Cooper’s abuse of power by using an ongoing State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) investigation to smear political opponents.
“Roy Cooper is the most political Attorney General in modern North Carolina politics,” said Carolina Rising President Dallas Woodhouse. “He is now playing politics with our SBI, to  damage his political opponents and to hold on to political power after overseeing a lousy crime  lab that put hundreds of criminal cases at risk.   “Cooper may be an ambitious politician but overseeing an incompetent crime lab puts us all at risk, and manipulating our top police agency to play politics, is just wrong and the voters need to know about it. “
After the SBI crime lab scandal and the outrageous appointing of Roy Cooper’s lobbyist, a person with no law enforcement experience to head the SBI, the General Assembly is considering moving the SBI to the Department of Public Safety, a move considered for years by Republicans and Democrats.
Cooper apparently released information about an investigation into a political donor who may have broken campaign finance laws.   Cooper’s staff seemed  leave the impression that some of Coopers political opponents may have done something wrong, although there is no apparent factual basis for that allegation and little likelihood under existing campaign finance law.

Advocacy group to campaign for NC tax reform

April 16, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Conservative political group Americans for Prosperity announced Tuesday a $500,000 marketing and advocacy campaign to push tax reform through the North Carolina General Assembly.

The group's North Carolina chapter will lead an effort that includes town hall meetings, grassroots organizing and advertising. The effort is meant to encourage action on a Depression-era tax code that ranks the state among the highest regionally in corporate and income taxes, said Dallas Woodhouse, state director.

Legislators from both parties have long talked about reforming the state's outdated tax code to make it more competitive.

The only comprehensive tax overhaul unveiled so far this session would lower both corporate and individual income tax rates to 6 percent. The combined local and state sales tax that most consumers pay would fall from 6.75 percent to 6.5 percent but would expand to new services that were previously exempted.

North Carolina's corporate rate of 6.9 percent and top individual rate of 7.75 percent rank among the highest in the Southeast.

Those and other figures show that North Carolina has fallen behind the times, said Lt. Gov. Dan Forest.

"I believe it is time for us to get back in the game, to make some bold moves," he added.

Americans for Prosperity will advocate specifically for a large tax cut up front that they argue will jumpstart economic growth. The group also wants sales taxes free of exemptions, the elimination of tax credits such as the earned income tax credit and reform for other taxes they say overlap.

Woodhouse said the organization will publish polling data showing that the public supports its philosophy, but he declined to reveal the source before the release. He said the group wants to keep the marketing campaign issue-based but could target specific lawmakers who don't support the group's anti-tax message.

"The plan right now is to be more positive, but I won't rule that out," he said.

AMERICANS FOR PROSPERITY: NC REAL SOLUTIONS

The Americans for Prosperity Foundation and the John William Pope Civitas Institute are excited to launch a multimedia educational effort entitled NC Real Solutions.

The effort explains the success of North Carolina’s recently passed state budget that offered North Carolina real solutions by eliminating the $3 billion deficit, balancing the budget, adding state-funded teachers and lowering taxes.

The effort includes a 30 second television commercial that touts the NC Real Solutions website: www.ncrealsolutions.com.

“NC Real Solutions is an effort to move beyond the overblown rhetoric and educate the public about the state budget. The reality is the budget passed by the new General Assembly closed the $3 billion budget deficit and balanced the budget. Additional resources for education enabled local schools to add 2,000 state-funded teaching positions. The budget, passed by both the state House and Senate, did all this while providing lower taxes to all North Carolina families and businesses. The Left has attempted to win the debate over the future direction of the state by yelling the loudest and the longest,” said AFP Foundation- North Carolina State Director Dallas Woodhouse. “The NC Real Solutions project cuts through the noise to present the facts to the people of North Carolina who deserve to know the truth.”

“Since day one the Civitas Institute has been committed to providing the facts to North Carolina taxpayers,” said Civitas President Francis Deluca. “The facts are that every week there are more examples of how the state budget enacted by the new General Assembly is offering North Carolina real solutions. Putting two billion dollars back in the hands of hardworking taxpayers and the real economy by cutting sales and income taxes, while at the same time balancing the budget by spending tax dollars more efficiently are prime examples. NC Real Solutions will make sure those facts get delivered over the air and online.”

Last year and again recently Governor Perdue pushed for a billion dollar increase in the state sales tax. Instead the General Assembly passed a bi-partisan budget that:

•Added more than 4,600 state-funded education positions, including 2,000 state-funded teacher positions.
•Closed a $3.1 billion budget gap – without raising taxes.
•Cancelled close to a quarter billion in previously approved but not yet issued state debt.
•Returned more than $2 billion in taxes to North Carolina families.
•Included nearly half a billion dollars in tax relief for small businesses.

Featured in the television ad is Americans for Prosperity Foundation member Donna King, a graduate of North Carolina State University. She is a mother of three.

NC Real Solutions is a project of Americans for Prosperity Foundation with assistance from the John William Pope Civitas Institute.
