Massive Massachusetts Monument Mangles Church/State Misrepresentation

If factually spurious theories about America’s founding were turkey? Thanksgiving Day tables would groan under the overcooked piles of them. You know: stuff that everybody knows to be true, but which isn’t.

If factually spurious theories about America’s founding were turkey? Thanksgiving Day tables would groan under overcooked piles of them. You know: stuff that everybody knows to be true, but which isn’t.

Then there’s the history of the nation as it actually unspooled.

Eighty miles from my front door, situated in an affluent but otherwise unprepossessing Massachusetts neighborhood overlooking Plymouth (as in “Plymouth Rock”) Harbor, towers the massive but obscure “National Monument to the Forefathers” (NMTF). It’s an 180 ton, eighty-one foot high, one-hundred-twenty-four-year-old monolith that honors 1620′s hardy,Mayflower settlers; in the process, bearing exuberant testimony to the nation’s Judeo-Christian roots. More and more, Americans are distressingly unaware of those roots — just as so few know about this majestic stone carving.

Kirk Cameron’s excellent 2012 documentary Monumental brought it some long overdue attention, but too often this Forefathers Monument remains like America’s actual, historical record: For those bothering to pay attention it offers overwhelming evidence of the spiritual — yes, religious! — principles which molded the Republic for centuries; but, more likely, it’s obliviously — even studiously — disregarded.

George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation!

 Thanksgiving Proclamation
Issued by President George Washington, at the request of Congress, on October 3, 1789

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.
Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and—Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favor, able interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other trangressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

OUR FAITHLESS LEADER

From my dear friend and patriot, Diane Rufino,
Lynn

I wanted to share a message I submitted to the "Opinion" section of my local paper, the Daily Reflector. I was limited to 300 words.

Diane

OUR FAITHLESS LEADER President Obama offered a few remarks for Thanksgiving, noting the many ways that Americans have come together. He highlighted the community mindset of those who volunteer in soup kitchens and praised our men and women in military uniform. In fact, his weekly address was titled: "On Thanksgiving, Grateful for the Men and Women Who Defend Our Country.” He also commented that he and his family are "reflecting on how truly lucky we are." Yes, the first family IS lucky, very lucky indeed. But not once did our President make any mention of God, the very reason our nation was founded in the first place.

Thanksgiving is a holiday traditionally steeped in rightful thanks and praise to God.

Yet he didn't offer thanks to those bravest of settlers who risked it all, including harsh stormy seas, unknown new lands and hostile inhabitants, all in order to establish a colony where they could worship and honor God as they believed they had the natural right to. At many times in our early years, disease and famine were so severe that every single family lost a loved one. How many of us would contemplate making a change in our lifestyles knowing that it could possibly cost us a child or a spouse? And yet our founding settlers took that risk. - for the glory of God. So that America could be that "shining city on a hill" - a nation so blessed by God because of its stalwart citizens that it would be a beacon and an example to the world. We celebrate the blessings we inherited from these early settlers on Thanksgiving. How naive Obama is. How reckless he is with his selective attention to our nation's history. So with respect to this Thanksgiving Day 2011, we'll think back and remember who the real turkey was.

President Ronald Reagan Thanksgiving Proclamation 28 Years Ago

THANKSGIVING DAY, 1982

Proclamation 4979. September 27, 1982

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, A PROCLAMATION

Two hundred years ago, the Congress of the United States issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation stating that it was "the indispensable duty of all nations"; to offer both praise and supplication to God. Above all other nations of the world, America has been especially blessed and should give special thanks. We have bountiful harvests, abundant freedoms, and a strong, compassionate people.

I have always believed that this anointed land was set apart in an uncommon way, that a divine plan placed this great continent here between the oceans to be found by people from every corner of the Earth who had a special love of faith and freedom. Our pioneers asked that He would work His will in our daily lives so America would be a land of morality, fairness, and freedom.

Today we have more to be thankful for than our pilgrim mothers and fathers who huddled on the edge of the New World that first Thanksgiving Day could ever dream. We should be grateful not only for our blessings, but for the courage and strength of our ancestors which enable us to enjoy the lives we do today. Let us reaffirm through prayers and actions our thankfulness for America's bounty and heritage.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, RONALD REAGAN, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 25, 1982, as a National Day of Thanksgiving and I call upon all of our citizens to set aside that day for appropriate expressions of thanksgiving.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of Sept. in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-two, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and seventh.

Thanksgiving - Just Around the Corner!

We are only a few weeks away from Thanksgiving, and unfortunately, its traditional message is rapidly being lost. Student textbooks now neglect or ignore the origins of this religious holiday, and many web encyclopedias fail to mention the religious aspects of Thanksgiving. Wikipedia even amazingly asserts: "While it may have been religious in origin, Thanksgiving is now primarily identified as a secular holiday."

The decline in general knowledge about this holiday is a perfect opportunity to educate those around you who don't know, and to encourage those who do. After all, Song of Solomon 8:13 reminds us: "Your friends listen to your voice. So speak!"

A perfect way to inform your friends, neighbors, and associates about this great American holiday is with a short simple tract giving the history and religious character of this beloved holiday. Order yours now in time for Thanksgiving!

You can also display a poster depicting the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving in America. Share the true religious history of Thanksgiving with your church, school children, Sunday School class, family or friends!

Let's not only remember the real reason for Thanksgiving but let's use this holiday as a means to help others learn to keep God at the center of our national Thanksgiving celebration!

God Bless
