Jacksonville Daily News: Comparing records provides a clear view--Randy Ramsey's campaign is consistent if nothing else. While he accuses Norm Sanderson of mud-slinging, he has himself wielded a king-sized mud bucket. He gives vague, feel-good references to his intentions and preferences, but his record indicates otherwise. Norm Sanderson, on the other hand, has a record. On bills which had significant opposition, his record is: on delegate bills, he voted Republican 29 out of 32 times; on Senate bills, Republican 11 out of 12; on nine votes on vetoed bills, he voted all nine times to override.

Jacksonville Daily News: Ramsey proving to be just what many think--If anyone had any doubt about Randy Ramsey's true political leanings, we have a clincher. We have seen more of the endless stream of slick mailers and now radio attack ads targeting Norm Sanderson. The strange thing is that these attacks only go to show that Ramsey is exactly what a number of us have been saying for weeks, that he is really a liberal just like the folks he has been supporting. The misinformation mailers say that Sanderson voted to implement Obama-care. Anyone who follows North Carolina politics knows this is pure bull as Sanderson co-sponsored the Health Care Freedom Act, which would have outlawed Obama-care in North Carolina. Unfortunately, Ramsey’s best political friend, Gov. Bev Perdue, vetoed it!

Political newcomer receives significant support from outside district

RALEIGH — Campaign finance disclosures made available this week show that Randy Ramsey has outraised and outspent his chief rival, Norm Sanderson, significantly in the Republican primary in N.C. Senate District 2.

Ramsey, a first-time candidate for the General Assembly, was associated closely with Democratic politicians until he chose to run. His support from Democrats includes air travel for Gov. Bev Perdue and a $2,000 contribution to her campaign in July. Before this year, he had given $37,500 to Republican candidates, but more than 10 times that amount to Democratic campaigns and to the state Democratic Party. Moreover, some people connected to the flying scandal that led to the criminal prosecution of and felony plea by Democratic former Gov. Mike Easley also have donated to Ramsey’s campaign.

Ramsey is the owner of Jarrett Bay Boatworks, a boat-building company located in Beaufort. His previous financial support of Democrats — even though he is a registered Republican — was the subject of a recent Carolina Journal cover story.

Sanderson, a first-term member of the N.C. House representing Craven and Pamlico counties, is a small business owner in Havelock. He decided to run for state Senate this year rather than seek re-election to his House seat. A third candidate, Ken Jones, also is running. The State Board of Elections could not locate Jones’ campaign finance reports by press time.

With days left until the election Tuesday, Ramsey has raised $418,649 — including $234,000 in money he has loaned to his campaign — and spent $285,299. Sanderson’s fundraising and spending totals dwarf those figures. He raised $32,613 and spent $28,691 over that time period.

The Senate district comprises Craven, Carteret, and Pamlico Counties. Approximately half of Ramsey’s actual contributions came from persons living outside the district. Ramsey also received the maximum individual contribution of $4,000 apiece from Daniel M. Doyle, Nicole Doyle, and Daniel M. Doyle Jr. of Belleair, Fl.

In addition, Ramsey received donations from the family of Elizabethtown businessman D.M. “Mac” Campbell Jr., who had close ties to the Easley and Perdue administrations and in the past by provided unreported flights to the chief executives, as documented by Carolina Journal.

One of Mac Campbell’s sons, Raleigh businessman McQueen Campbell, was at the center of the scandal involving unreported flights for former Gov. Mike Easley. McQueen Campbell’s wife Laurie Campbell gave Ramsey $1,000 using her previous name Laurie Perkis, but Ramsey’s campaign report listed her last name as Perkins. (The Campbells married in January.) McQueen Campbell’s brother Wesley gave Ramsey $250 and their father Mac Campbell gave Ramsey $1,000.

Jimmy D. Clark of Greensboro, who also was involved in Perdue’s unreported flying activities, gave Ramsey $1,000. Former N.C. Supreme Court chief justice Burley Mitchell, a Democrat, gave Ramsey $250.

The primary is May 8.

Read These Shocking Numbers

Sometimes in life you get "blindsided" - hit with something you never saw coming. When it comes to Randy Ramsey and his run for State Senate, you've had fair warning. The release of his latest campaign report verifies what I have been saying for months: Randy Ramsey and his "pay to play" friends are trying to buy an election.

Here are just a few of the figures that jump out at you.

Total receipts of over $367,000.

Ramsey has personally contributed over $180,000.  (Why would someone spend over $180,000 of their own money to run for State Senate seat (the Senate annual salary is $13,000/year)? What does Ramsey know that we don't know about being a NC Senator? ~ Lynn)


Over half (52%) of the money generated by personal contributions came from outside the District.

Ramsey received over $20,000 in contributions from Florida, Illinois, Tennessee, Ohio, Maine, South Carolina and Virginia.

One family from a small town in Florida contributed more money than Ramsey's entire hometown of Beaufort.

The report includes a contribution from the N.C. Advocates for Justice PAC, the political action committee of trial lawyers that was the largest PAC contributor in state legislative races in 2010.

The report includes several contributions from individuals who traditional give almost exclusively to Democrats, including Wendell Murphy, who was subpoenaed in the Board of Elections hearings against Governor Mike Easley and was also listed in the list of unreported campaign flights for Bev Perdue. Randy Ramsey was included in that list.

Why would someone spend over $180,000 of their own money to run for State Senate seat?

Why are so many contributors from outside our area and our state pouring money into Randy Ramsey's campaign?

Why is Randy Ramsey running under the guise of a "Conservative Republican" when all the evidence proves otherwise?

The answer to all of these questions is the same: the influence seeker is seeking to become an influence peddler. We cannot let this happen.

There is less than a week until Election Day and Randy Ramsey is flooding the airwaves and mailboxes with distortions of my record. We have exhausted every resource so we need your help now.

The TRUTH

Over the past few weeks, I've spent a large portion of my day listening to the outrage of conservative citizens who are infuriated over Randy Ramsey's distortions of my voting record. The latest deals with the military, and it is even more outrageous than the lies about ObamaCare.

Ramsey is running TV and radio commercials saying I allowed "Loan Sharks" to prey on our military men and women. As with the previous distortions, all that any objective observer would have to do is read the bill referenced (HB 810) to see that it did nothing of the sort.

The bill dealt with changing the laws regarding legitimate lending institutions, not "Loan Sharks", and the interest rates and terms they must abide by. Members of the military often obtain these short term loans for items like furniture or electronics and there was concern that especially our youngest service members might make hasty and possibly unwise financial decisions. Because of this concern, a clause was written in the bill that required any loan to a member of the military to be approved by the service member's commanding officer (the entire section is listed at the end of this email).

Randy Ramsey is desperate. He has put in $100,000 of his own money and been bankrolled with another $100,000 from "pay to play" influence seekers who have a vested interest in winning this Senate seat. He has run phone polls almost daily for two weeks, and I am convinced these polls show that he is behind. That is why he is resorting to these win-at all-cost tactics. Thankfully, those tactics are not succeeding, and it is because a people like you.

I ask you now to forward this email to your entire email list and remind your conservative friends that Randy Ramsey is trying to buy your vote. Let them know about my strong conservative record and why I am the clear conservative choice.

Exception for Military Borrowers. - A licensee may not make a loan to a borrower "(l) who is a military service member unless the military service member obtains a written authorization signed by the service member's company commander. A licensee must include a clear and concise statement in the loan documentation advising the borrower that military service members must identify themselves as service members and must obtain written authorization from their company commander before entering a loan agreement. The licensee shall retain a copy of the borrower's military ID card and the company commander's written authorization in the borrower's loan file. The borrower must attest (i) that he or she is or is not a military service member, (ii) that if the borrower is a military service member, he or she has obtained a written authorization from the company commander to enter the loan agreement, and (iii) that all information presented to the licensee pertaining to the requirements of this subsection is true and accurate to the best of the borrower's knowledge. For the purpose of this subsection "military service member" includes only a person on active duty."

At the Republican Men's Club in New Bern, Randy Ramsey, when asked if he hires illegals; said that he has four with green cards because they had skills that couldn't be found around here. I thought we had some of the best boat builders in the country here that need jobs.

I met one of his Mexicans at early voting in Newport. I asked her if she was there to work for a candidate since she was there four hours before early voting started. She said she was there to work for Randy. I then asked her if she worked for him and she said she was a 'private contractor'. I asked her if she worked at Jarrett Bay. She said that she worked in the office. I guess office work is one of those skills than couldn't be found here.

Could one of Randy's 'private contractors' maybe drive a bus between Havelock and Jarrett Bay that I've been hearing so much about?

I've talked to five of Randy's former employees. Maybe they never had the 'needed skills'.

Desperate people resort to desperate measures, and there is no better example than my opponent's recent attacks on not just me but the entire North Carolina Republican Party.


By now you may have received a few of these outrageous mailers from my opponent, Randy Ramsey, saying I voted to implement Obamacare. Political distortion has reached a new low as he has misrepresented a bill designed to LIMIT the power of Obamacare, a bill that was supported by every Republican in the State House.

Here are the facts:

The legislation referenced in Ramsey's flyer is House Bill 115 which was a bill that was a safeguard against the Federal Government having total control over Obamacare funding it if became law. There is the full title of that bill: An Act to Preserve State-Based Authority to Regulate the North Carolina Health Insurance Market and Prevent Federal Encroachment on State Authority by Establishing the North Carolina Benefit Exhchange. How can anyone interpret the words Preserve State-Based Authority and Prevent Federal Enchroachment and believe it supports Obamacare? A failure to act would have meant Washington, DC, not North Carolina, would have made all decisions regarding Obamacare. If the Supreme Court rules Obamacare unconstitutional, the bill is null and void.


House Bill 115 was supported by EVERY REPUBLICAN in the State House and even 18 Conservative Democrats. The only opposition came from the most liberal Democrats. Randy Ramsey has taken sides against the Republican Party and said he would have voted with the liberals. Anybody surprised?


The truth is on our side but we have one glaring obstacle to overcome: MONEY. Randy Ramsey is on pace to spend $250,000 in this primary. He has purchased over $100,000 worth of radio and TV this week alone. This type of money spreads his distorted message out to the masses and as I send out this message, we are rushing to produce radio and television ads to respond to these outrageous claims.

A Letter from NC State Representative Pat McElraft

As a State Representative, I am fully aware that politics is not for the faint of heart. Any elected official understands that they will be judged on their voting record and I stand on my record over the years. But when people distort that record, you must defend yourself and those who stand with you.

Upon hearing of my legislative colleague Norman Sanderson’s intention of running for State Senate, I promptly endorsed his candidacy. I have personally witnessed his conservative values and work ethic in the State House and have no doubt he will be a strong conservative voice for Carteret, Craven and Pamlico counties. After lending my initial endorsement, I made no other public comment. I thought that was the right thing to do as a Republican to let the candidates fight this out. However, I can no longer remain silent since I, personally,and 67 other Republican Legislators have been brought into this with the latest Randy Ramsey Ad and flyer.

State Senate candidate Randy Ramsey recently aired a radio ad and sent out a mailer that accused Representative Sanderson of voting to implement ObamaCare. I was the co-sponsor of the bill that was referenced (HB115) and it was supported by every Republican member of the House as well as 18 conservative Democrats. Only the most liberal Democrats voted against this largely procedural bill that saved North Carolina taxpayers countless dollars. In fact, the full title of the legislation was An Act to Preserve State-Based Authority to Regulate the North Carolina Health Insurance Market and Prevent Federal Encroachment on State Authority by Establishing the North Carolina Benefit Exchange. As the name implies, it was designed to limit the power of ObamaCare. Randy Ramsey’s blatant misrepresentation of this bill was not only an attack on Norman Sanderson but on every Republican who voted for this piece of common-sense legislation.


The very first piece of business for the Republican led legislature in 2011 was passing House Bill #2, entitled Protect Health Care Freedom. I was proud to co-sponsor that bill with Representative Sanderson, knowing that it protected North Carolina’s citizens from ObamaCare and the overreaching authority of the Federal Government into your health care decisions. That important piece of legislation would be law today if had not been vetoed by Governor Bev Perdue.

For anyone to say that Norman Sanderson, myself or any Republican legislator supports ObamaCare is outrageous and a blatant misrepresentation of the facts. Randy Ramsey has either chosen to resort to distortion in a desperate attempt to gain votes or he has not researched the information his campaign team is releasing. Either way, the practice is unacceptable and should immediately cease.
