Hamas-CAIR wants to remove Pledge of Allegiance, “Liberty and Justice for all”? Allahu akbar!

DC Clothesline, Pamela Geller, February 19, 2014

Slave to Islamic supremacist imperatives, Hamas-CAIR, is schooling us on what the Pledge of Allegiance means and why schoolchildren should not have to say it. They are telling us that it should not be “mandated” in America, when every aspect of daily human life is mandated under sharia. I am sure they would love to mandate the shahada.

Their allegiance is not with America. Their allegiance is to Islam.

Allah’s divine sovereignty is irreconcilable with popular sovereignty, which is the essence of democracy.” And finally, that “Islamic law, the Shari’a is therefore not a supplement to the “secular” legal code, it is the only such code and the only basis of obligation, because aMuslim’s only true allegiance is to Allah, and to Muhammad…” (more here)

People Power Against the Department of Justice

The DOJ and its allies, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Southern Poverty Law Center, are on the defensive after thousands of people turned out in Tennessean Tuesday night to protest a scheme to censor criticism of Islam.

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), a key component of a network of Muslim Brotherhood organizations in the U.S., called the turnout a “mob” and praised the Obama/Holder Justice Department for standing up to local residents.

CAIR said “a large group of protesters heckled and interrupted speeches by Bill Killian, U.S. Attorney of the Eastern District of Tennessee, and by Kenneth Moore, FBI special agent in charge of the Eastern Tennessee District.”

In fact, the DOJ had provoked the reaction by announcing beforehand that people using the Internet to criticize Muslims might be prosecuted for civil rights violations and that the meeting on “public discourse in a free society” in Tennessee would examine this alleged problem.

The Truth About CAIR: Read it, Memorize it, Broadcast it

LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO THE PEOPLE WHO HATE YOU.

The power structure behind the “Islamic Plague.” You know the organization. Now meet the players. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is undoubtedly the largest, most well-funded and politically adept Muslim organizations in the United States. They are the proverbial “head of the snake” we call Islam and a majority stakeholder in the spread of this hateful philosophy. Most U.S. citizens who are concerned with the impact of Islam on the American value system have heard of CAIR. But how many of you know the mission behind the name? Let me introduce you to the people that hate you.

CAIR’s public face, not unlike the smiling faces of its Executive Staff pictured in this article, is charming and harmless. Its mission statement reads like a utopian call for kumbaya: “to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding”.

I must be a bigotted, intolerant racist to have a problem with CAIR, right? Wrong.

Obama Admin Pulls “Offensive”Islam References from Anti-Terrorism Materials

Deputy U.S. Attorney General James Cole confirmed on Wednesday that the Obama administration was pulling back all training materials used for the law enforcement and national security communities,in order to eliminate all references to Islam that some Muslim groups have claimed are offensive.

“I recently directed all components of the Department of Justice to re-evaluate their training efforts in a range of areas, from community outreach to national security,” Cole told a panel at the George Washington University law school.

The move comes after complaints from advocacy organizations including the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and others identified as Muslim Brotherhood front groups in the 2004 Holy Land Foundation terror fundraising trial.

RANDY'S RIGHT: DOJ in bed with Islamic supremacist groups

RANDY'S RIGHT, September 7, 2011

While doing research for my new book, Stop the Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance,” I discovered some startling information about the full extent of Muslim Brotherhood infiltration in the Department of Justice and its brazen pro-Muslim activities. And when I inquired for documentation related to these activities, the DOJ’s response to me indicated that the agency’s ties with Islamic supremacist groups in the U.S. are far more extensive than anyone has realized.

I was especially interested in DOJ actions extending certain civil-rights laws to Muslims in voting, particularly insofar as they involved the DOJ’s Lema Bashir. Essentially, they wanted to covert a religious class into a racial one, to create majority-Muslim legislative districts. Lema Bashir was at the center of Virginia’s failing to mail military ballots in time in 2008. The same mistakes were repeated in 2010, and United States military voters were heavily disenfranchised because of calculated inaction by Bashir and the DOJ throughout 2010. Disenfranchising the military vote is policy. You could make a case that bad mistakes were made in 2008, but when those same mistakes were made and made worse in 2010 by a devout Muslim who calls Israel “northern Palestine,” I submit that it is no accident, but deliberate policy.

There seemed to be no way they could withhold the documents whose existence I discovered, so on Feb. 28, 2011, I made a Freedom of Information Act request. I wrote to Nelson Hermilla, the chief of the FOIA branch of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division.

I asked him for “all communications between any employee of the Civil Rights Division and the Islamic Society of North America [ISNA], the Council on American-Islamic Relations [CAIR], the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee [ADC], the Muslim Students Association [MSA] or any affiliated student group. In particular, but not limited to, the request includes all communications related to appearances at or sponsorships of conventions or meetings of this organizations by the Department of Justice including conferences in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.”

Join Pamela Geller in her fight to battle jihadist initiatives in our local communities — read “Stop The Islamization Of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance”

ISNA and CAIR, of course, were named unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation jihad terror funding case. The MSA is a Muslim Brotherhood organization. They’re the last groups the DOJ should be working with.

I also asked Hermilla to provide “transcripts of speeches delivered by Civil Rights Division political appointees or section managers at any meeting of the Islamic Society of North America, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the Muslim Students Association or any affiliated student group. If transcripts of such appearances do not exist, please provide a list of such appearances instead.” And for “resumes of all attorney and intern hires in the Civil Rights Division in which the resumes list prior employment at the Islamic Society of North America, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, or the Muslim Students Association.” In addition, I requested “all travel authorization forms, expense submissions and records of payment for any Department employee to attend any convention, conference or meeting with or at the Islamic Society of North America, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee,” and “any memorandum, document, email, telephone conference record or proposal discussing the use of civil rights laws in the Housing Section, Voting Section, and Education Section to use laws enforced by these sections to bring cases or potential cases on behalf of a protected class defined as Arab or Muslim or Islamic.” I asked him to “include any documents which discuss the applicability of civil rights laws to these classes from these three sections.”

BIG GOVERNMENT: The AFDI Threats to Freedom Index

by Pam Geller

Freedom is more embattled in America today than ever. My group, the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), has begun tracking the activities of numerous active groups that are threats to freedom in the United States today on our Threats to Freedom Index. We plan to augment it periodically and publish it annually.

All Threat to Freedom groups have beliefs or practices that attack or malign American Constitutional freedoms and/or lawful initiatives for American self-defense.

My colleague Robert Spencer and I compiled the list from records of Threat to Freedom group statements and activities as they appear in their own publications and websites, as well as from reports from concerned citizens and mainstream media reports.

Threat to Freedom group activities can include misrepresentation of anti-terror and other law enforcement initiatives, attempts to restrict the freedom of speech regarding Islamic jihad or other threats to freedom, defamation of freedom fighters, disinformation campaigns in the mainstream media regarding attempts by the U.S. and Israel to defend themselves, and more.

Listing as a Threat to Freedom group does not in itself imply that a listed group calls for or participates in violence or criminal activities, although it does not rule out their doing so.

Here are the first groups listed on our AFDI Threats to Freedom Index. There is more detail in my book Stop the Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance.

BOOK NOOK! MUSLIM MAFIA IS A MUST READ!

General urges Americans to read 'Muslim Mafia'
Boykin gives impassioned plea for exposé of stealth jihad

Retired Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin, former U.S. deputy undersecretary of defense for intelligence, made an impassioned plea for Americans – especially Christians – to learn about the inner workings of stealth jihadists by reading "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America," a book based on the covert penetration of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Boykin, who has played a role in almost every recent major American military operation – serving in Grenada, Somalia and Iraq – spoke at a prophecy conference in California sponsored by evangelical leader Greg Laurie.

"There's a recent book that came out called ';Muslim Mafia,'" said Boykin, currently a professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia and author of "Never Surrender: A Soldier's Journey to the Crossroads of Faith and Freedom." "Have any of you read this? Have any of you ever seen it? I encourage you to get this book – 'Muslim Mafia.' ... This book will scare you. This book will open your eyes. This book will shake you. What this book says is frightening,"

Boykin went on to tell his audience of thousands at the Harvest Christian Fellowship about some of the revelations in the book by P. David Gaubatz and Paul Sperry:

New evidence that CAIR was launched to support the Hamas terrorist group and has transferred tens of thousands of dollars to a group recently convicted as Hamas' top fundraising arm in the U.S. – money that ended up aiding terrorist attacks on Israelis and Americans;

Internal documents showing CAIR, despite claims of cooperating with law enforcement, actively works behind the scenes to mislead and deceive the FBI on behalf of terrorism suspects – and has even cultivated Muslim moles inside law enforcement who have tipped off FBI terror targets;

CAIR is more closely tied to al-Qaida than previously reported;

CAIR claims to represent all Muslim Americans; however, it has victimized some 100 indigent Muslims in a massive fraud and threatened them when they tried to go to the media; and internally, personnel complaints reveal CAIR discriminates against Shiite Muslims and Muslim women within its own headquarters;

CAIR and its sister fronts are funded by foreign Muslim Brotherhood sources;

CAIR leaders share the Muslim Brotherhood's ultimate goal to replace the U.S. Constitution with Islamic law;

The Muslim Brotherhood investment in corporate America will be used to pressure U.S. companies into compliance with Islamic principles.

"That's a testimonial I treasure," said Joseph Farah, chief executive officer of WND and WND Books, the publisher of "Muslim Mafia." "I've been promoting this groundbreaking investigation for a year, and for a year what I call the "Media Mafia" has been covering up the shocking revelations. I appreciate the courage General Boykin demonstrated by speaking out."

Coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the release of "Muslim Mafia" last October, Farah has been making a new effort to revisit the subject matter.

"Take General Boykin's challenge – get yourself a copy of 'Muslim Mafia' today," he says. "Share it with your friends. Donate a copy to your local library. Pass on a copy to your representative in Congress. Give one to your local law enforcement agency."

Muslim Group Advises Women Wearing Hijabs to Allow TSA ‘Enhanced Pat Downs’ Only on Head and Neck Area

Friday, November 12, 2010, By Penny Starr
(CNSNews.com) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) (FRONT GROUP FOR HAMAS) has issued a travel warning to Muslim airline passengers on U.S. aircraft in response to the Transportation Safety Administration’s "enhanced pat down" policy that went into effect in late October.

CAIR said Muslims who object to full-body scans for religious reasons should know their rights if they are required to undergo a pat-down, including asking for the procedure to be done in a private place. In addition, CAIR offered a “special recommendation” for Muslim women who wear a hijab, telling them they should tell the TSA officer that they may be searched only around the head and neck.
What better way to get around the screenings and sneak a bomb on board!

ACT FOR AMERICA

Lawsuit against Oklahoma shariah ban will expose America to CAIR’s real agenda and the oppressive nature of shariah law

Last week, after the Oklahoma affiliate of CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) sued to block the Oklahoma amendment that passed with 70% support, we sent out a national email asserting that this lawsuit reveals CAIR’s real agenda—the advance of shariah law.

Investigative journalist and author Paul Sperry, co-author of the expose’ on CAIR entitled Muslim Mafia, recently posted an Investors Business Daily commentary (below, highlights added) that sheds more light on this.

Just as the Ground Zero Mosque controversy became a vehicle for a national discussion about Imam Rauf’s advocacy of shariah law, so will CAIR’s lawsuit. What’s more, the American people will get to see that current and former leaders of CAIR want Islamic law (shariah) to rule America.

We are not going to try to predict what judges will decide on this lawsuit as it works its way through the courts. But we do agree with Sperry’s comment below, regarding a national debate about shariah law: “This is not a debate CAIR wants to have.”

But we do.
Thank you, CAIR.

Shining A Light On Shariah Creep

November 10, 2010

Islamofascism: The Council on American-Islamic Relations may wish it never sued to overturn an Oklahoma ban on Shariah law. Now the entire nation will get to see it and other Islamists' true anti-American colors.

CAIR is thumping its chest over persuading a Clinton-appointed federal judge to temporarily block Oklahoma from enacting a state constitutional amendment that prohibits state courts from considering Islamic law when deciding cases. Fully 70% of Oklahoma voters passed the landmark measure.

But CAIR has ignited a legal firestorm that will likely rage all the way to the Supreme Court. Thanks to CAIR's latest bit of lawfare, Americans will get to hear a long overdue debate not just about the constitutionality of such bans on Shariah law but about the constitutionality of Shariah law itself.

This is not a debate CAIR wants to have, since it ultimately will have to defend the indefensible. It claims in a press release that Shariah law is "a dynamic legal framework" derived from Islamic scripture "and analytical reasoning." In fact, there's nothing reasoned about it. It's a medieval legal code that administers cruel and unusual punishments such as stonings, amputations and honor killings. Think the Taliban.

Shariah can be seen in action this week with Pakistan's death sentence on a Christian woman for blasphemy. Between 1986 and 2009, at least 974 people have been charged for defiling the Quran or insulting the Muslim Prophet Muhammad.

CAIR, which thinks free speech is a one-way street, is working with the Organization of the Islamic Conference on an international blasphemy law that would criminalize "Islamophobia," according to the book, "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America."

Shariah also permits wife-beating, something CAIR also knows about. Its sister organization, the Islamic Society of North America, condones it in its fatwas (or religious rulings) for Muslim Americans. More, CAIR distributes a book, "The Meaning of the Holy Quran," which authorizes men to hit their wives.

CAIR says it's just a "civil rights advocacy group." But the Justice Department says it's a front group for Hamas and its parent, the radical Muslim Brotherhood, a worldwide jihadist movement that has a secret plan to impose Shariah law on the U.S.

"From its founding by Muslim Brotherhood leaders, CAIR conspired with other affiliates of the Muslim Brotherhood to support terrorists," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Gordon Kromberg in a recent court filing.

U.S. prosecutors in 2007 named CAIR an unindicted co-conspirator in a criminal scheme led by the Holy Land Foundation to funnel millions to Hamas suicide bombers and their families.

"CAIR has been identified by the government at trial as a participant in an ongoing and ultimately unlawful conspiracy to support a designated terrorist organization, a conspiracy from which CAIR never withdrew," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Jacks, who recently won an award from Attorney General Eric Holder for convicting the Holy Land terrorists.

Federal courts found "ample evidence" linking CAIR to the conspiracy and are expected to unseal the dossier in coming weeks.

The Holy Land revelations prompted the FBI to sever ties with CAIR until it can demonstrate it's not a terror front. "Until we can resolve whether there continues to be a connection between CAIR or its executives and Hamas, the FBI does not view CAIR as an appropriate liaison partner," advised Assistant FBI Director Richard Powers in a 2009 letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

CAIR's leaders don't want a ban on Shariah law, because they have a secret agenda to institutionalize Shariah law in America.

"I wouldn't want to create the impression that I wouldn't like the government of the United States to be Islamic sometime in the future," CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper let it slip out to a Minneapolis Star-Tribune reporter in 1993, before CAIR was formed.

CAIR's founding chairman, Omar Ahmad, wants Shariah law to replace the Constitution. "Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant," he told a Muslim audience in Fremont, Calif., in 1998. "The Quran should be the highest authority in America."

CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad is an Islamic supremacist who thinks Muslims should run Washington: "Who better can lead America than Muslims?"

Islamizing America also happens to be the agenda of the Muslim Brotherhood the radical, Cairo-based outlaw group the government says CAIR is fronting for. The founding archives of its U.S. branch, seized in an FBI raid and introduced as evidence in the Holy Land trial, reveal a "strategic goal" of "eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and sabotaging its miserable house ... so that Allah's religion is made victorious over all other religions." The Brotherhood calls its plan a "grand jihad." CAIR argues in its suit that "the Shariah ban's purpose is to stigmatize, denigrate and segregate plaintiff's faith in the public's mind as something foreign and to be feared."

No, the goal is to make sure no Oklahoma judge considers Shariah law in rulings on domestic violence, family law, probate, free speech, contracts and other matters, as judges have in other states, to a wider degree in Canada and now on a routine basis in Britain. The ban is to prevent courts from legitimizing a religious legal system antithetical to the U.S. Constitution in the areas of freedom of speech, equality and humane punishment, among other bedrock Western principles.

Thanks to CAIR's lawsuit, all this can now be aired out for the public.

TERRORIST FRONT GROUP, CAIR DOES IT AGAIN!

CAIR sues to block Oklahoma sharia ban

CAIR’s real agenda revealed

Muslim Group Sues Oklahoma Over Sharia Amendment

By Althea Fung
Friday, November 5, 2010

A Muslim advocacy group is suing to stop a measure approved by Oklahoma voters on Tuesday that would ban judges in the state from considering Islamic law in court proceedings.

About 70 percent of voters approved State Question 755, which says “the courts shall not consider international law or Sharia Law.”

Muneer Awad, director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations's Oklahoma chapter, filed the suit in U.S. District Court to block officials from certifying the measure. Awad told the Wall Street Journal the measure violates the First Amendment right to practice religion without government intervention.

CAIR legal adviser Gadeir Abbas said SQ755 was "designed to stigmatize Muslims, to turn the Constitution of Oklahoma into a vehicle for oppressing a minority that is currently unpopular."

The "Save Our State Amendment" was proposed by Republican state Sen. Anthony Sykes, who said the amendment isn’t about persecuting Muslims but keeping the Oklahoma judiciary system from “sliding down a slippery slope.”

Former CIA Director Jim Woolsey, who worked to get the amendment passed, said on Fox and Friends this morning that it's about not allowing criminals to use religious code to circumvent the system when they're "prosecuted for beating or assaulting their wives or daughters."

“What we really need to do is make sure people can’t void the impact of criminal law by citing their religious beliefs,” he said.

In New Jersey, a judge declined to place a restraining order on a Moroccan man who forced his wife to have sex. The ruling was later overturned.

A hearing is set for Monday.

Robert Spencer

A Closer Look at CAIR

10/22/2010

Editor’s note: The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has been in the news heavily this week because of the organization’s role in getting Juan Williams fired from his NPR post over comments he made on Fox News’ “O’Reilly Factor.” In the July 2009 issue of Townhall Magazine, Robert Spencer wrote an exclusive, in-depth investigative piece about the shadowy group with very suspicious ties. Below is the full text of the piece titled, “Devil May CAIR.” Subscribe to Townhall Magazine today to get even more reporting and analysis like this.

“We are similar to a Muslim NAACP,” says the spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Ibrahim Hooper. The group says that its mission is “to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.”

Law enforcement officials all over the country have received sensitivity training from CAIR, and—up until October 2008, when the FBI belatedly and tentatively cut off cooperative efforts—the organization has been a key partner in the FBI’s attempts to reach out to Muslim communities in the United States. The mainstream media routinely seek CAIR out for a moderate Muslim perspective, despite the fact that led to the FBI’s decision to finally cut its ties to the group: CAIR was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF), which was once the largest Islamic charity in the United States but has been shut down for funneling charitable contributions to the jihad terrorist group Hamas.

That unindicted co-conspirator status is just one aspect of CAIR’s dark side, belying its moderate pretensions. All those who love freedom and want to defend the United States should know about this dark side—and it should give pause to government and law enforcement officials who still work with this unsavory group.

In broad outline, CAIR’s dark side has been known for years. Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., said that CAIR is “unusual in its extreme rhetoric and its associations with groups that are suspect.” Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said of CAIR that “we know it has ties to terrorism” and “intimate links with Hamas.” Schumer’s words have been proven correct.

Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Bill Shuster said: “Time and again the organization has shown itself to be nothing more than an apologist for groups bent on the destruction of Israel and Islamic domination over the West.”

Of course, if Hooper or other CAIR officials were asked about such statements, they would probably characterize them as “hatred” and “bigotry.” But are these three elected officials merely purveying hatred and bigotry? Are these statements about CAIR false and defamatory?

The record points to no.

SUSPICIOUS CONNECTIONS

In June 2007, federal prosecutors named CAIR as a participant in what the New York Sun called “an alleged criminal conspiracy to support a Palestinian Arab terrorist group, Hamas.” This was when CAIR was first designated an unindicted co-conspirator for its support for the Holy Land Foundation. The federal prosecution document described CAIR as a present or past member of “the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood’s Palestine Committee and/or its organizations.” The Muslim Brotherhood is the parent organization of both Hamas and al Qaeda.

That came as no surprise to counterterrorism expert Steve Emerson, who has called CAIR “a radical fundamentalist front group for Hamas.” And Steven Pomerantz, the FBI’s former chief of counterterrorism, stated long before the feds named the group an unindicted co-conspirator, “CAIR, its leaders and its activities effectively give aid to international terrorist groups.”

Another former FBI counterterrorism chief, John P. O’Neill Sr., died on 9/11 in the World Trade Center. His family has named CAIR in a lawsuit as having “been part of the criminal conspiracy of radical Islamic terrorism” responsible for the Sept. 11 atrocities.

Is all this just slander, as CAIR spokesmen would perhaps claim? No, it isn’t. The unindicted co-conspirator designation linking CAIR to funding for Hamas is by no means the first time CAIR and Hamas have been linked.

INTERESTING BEGINNINGS

CAIR was founded in 1994 by Nihad Awad and Omar Ahmad. Awad had been the president of the Islamic Association of Palestine (IAP) and Ahmad its public relations director. The IAP, which was shut down by the government in 2005 for funding terrorism, was founded in 1981 by a Hamas operative, Mousa Abu Marzook. Marzook currently heads Hamas’ “political bureau” and is engaged in negotiations with Fatah in hopes of forming a Palestinian unity government. In the course of these negotiations, Hamas reaffirmed its refusal to accept Israel’s right to exist—which is tantamount to vowing its total destruction.

According to a report dated Aug. 14, 2001, from the Immigration and Naturalization Services, the IAP was dedicated to “publishing and distributing HAMAS communiqués printed on IAP letterhead, as well as other written documentation to include the HAMAS charter and glory records, which are tributes to HAMAS’ violent ‘successes.’” The same report also stated that IAP had received “approximately $490,000 from Marzook during the period in which Marzook held his admitted role as a HAMAS leader.”

Emerson said that the IAP was Hamas’ “primary voice in the United States,” and another former chief of the FBI’s counterterrorism department, Oliver Revell, called the IAP “a front organization for Hamas that engages in propaganda for Islamic militants.” Nihad Awad stated in 1994 at Barry University in Florida: “I’m in support of the Hamas movement.” However, in the summer of 2006, Awad came under pressure for this in connection with his support for the campaign of Minnesota Democrat Keith Ellison, who that November became the nation’s first Muslim congressman. Awad disavowed Hamas at that time.

Arguably, Awad and Ahmad left the IAP for CAIR because they had renounced the IAP’s view of Islam and jihad and had become moderates. If they did, however, they evidently still had some trouble distinguishing moderates from extremists, as the arrest records of some former CAIR officials show.

CONVICTED CRIMINAL EMPLOYEES

CAIR has insisted that its former employees and board members who are now doing hard time for terrorism charges were not employed with CAIR when they were involved in their illegal activities and that the organization can’t possibly be held responsible for everything done by anyone who was ever connected with the organization.

Very well. One inevitably wonders, however, how these men got their jobs in the first place. If CAIR is a moderate group that abhors all jihad violence, how did those former CAIR employees who are now in prison get through the interviewing process? The Islamic world is engulfed in an immense international upheaval, with millions of jihadists claiming to represent “true Islam” and recruiting among peaceful Muslims on that basis, and somehow that subject never came up when CAIR officials were getting to know Randall Royer or Bassam Khafagi or Rabih Haddad?

Randall Todd (“Ismail”) Royer was CAIR’s communications specialist and civil rights coordinator. He was part of the “Virginia jihad group,” which was indicted on 41 counts of “conspiracy to train for and participate in a violent jihad overseas.” They were accused of association with Lashkar-e-Taiba, a jihad terrorist group.

Matthew Epstein of the Investigative Project on Terrorism has reported that Royer helped recruit the other members of the Virginia group to the jihad while he was working for CAIR.

Royer was also among those charged in a separate indictment that said they conspired to help al Qaeda and the Taliban fight against American troops in Afghanistan. And Royer admitted to a grand jury that he had already waged jihad warfare in Bosnia and that his commander took orders from Osama bin Laden.

According to terrorism expert, author and columnist Daniel Pipes, “Royer eventually pleaded guilty to lesser firearms-related charges, and the former CAIR staffer was sentenced to 20 years in prison.”

Then there was Ghassan Elashi, the founder of CAIR’s Texas chapter. He was charged in July 2004 with giving Hamas more than $12 million while he was running the Holy Land Foundation. Elashi was convicted in November 2008 of providing material support to terrorism in connection with his role in the HLF. Elashi had already been convicted in July 2004 of illegally shipping computers to two state-sponsors of terrorism—Libya and Syria. And he was convicted in April 2005 of knowingly doing business with IAP founder and Hamas operative Marzook. Elashi was found guilty of conspiracy, money laundering and dealing in the property of a designated terrorist.

Bassem Khafagi was CAIR’s community relations director. He pled guilty in September 2003 to lying on his visa application and passing bad checks, and he was deported. Before he worked for CAIR, he was president of the Islamic Assembly of North America (IANA)—which is under investigation by the Justice Department for terrorism-related activities. According to court documents, the IANA was devoted to spreading “radical Islamic ideology, the purpose of which was indoctrination, recruitment of members and the instigation of acts of violence and terrorism.”

Rabih Haddad was a CAIR fundraiser who was arrested in December 2001 and deported. The charges were terror-related.

A MODERATE GROUP?

Maybe all these people had jihadist sentiments either before or after working for CAIR but were completely moderate while working for it. Maybe. But this is just part of the picture. CAIR is, evidently, a moderate group that has several one-time employees arrested on terror charges. It is a moderate group that came out of another group that has been identified as the “primary voice in the U.S.” of a terror group. It is a moderate group that traffics in legal threats and intimidation against those of which it disapproves.

This is also a moderate group that in 1998 demanded that a billboard be removed. CAIR found the billboard offensive to the delicate sensibilities of Muslims in America. According to Pipes, the billboard called Osama bin Laden, who at that time had already declared jihad against the United States, “the sworn enemy.” CAIR said this was insulting to Muslims. This is a moderate group that, according to its own Form 990 filings for 2003, invested $325,000 from its California offices with the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT). Newsweek reported that “NAIT money has helped the Saudi Arabian sect of Wahhabism—or Salafism, as the broader, pan-Islamic movement is called—to seize control of hundreds of mosques in U.S. Muslim communities.”

When they seize this control, what do they propose to do with it? And what is CAIR’s overall goal in the United States?

According to reporter Lisa Gardiner at the San Ramon Valley Herald, CAIR’s co-founder and former board chairman, Omar Ahmad, told a Muslim audience in 1998, “Islam isn’t in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant. The Koran … should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on earth.” In 2003, when these words started to get publicity, Ahmad denied saying this. He denies he said it, and he denies that he believes this. However, the original reporter, Lisa Gardiner was contacted, and she stands by her story.

Nonetheless, Ahmad has denied saying or believing this in no uncertain terms. He evidently disagrees, therefore, with Ibrahim Hooper, who said in 1993, before CAIR was founded: “I wouldn’t want to create the impression that I wouldn’t like the government of the United States to be Islamic sometime in the future.” Radio host Michael Medved told me that Hooper has repeated this sentiment on his show more recently.

Set aside both the alleged statement by Ahmad and the statement by Hooper. Look at what CAIR does, not what it says, and think about what might be the result.

CAIR has for years pursued a consistent policy of attempting to silence critics and those who say things about Islam and jihad that the organization doesn’t like. The group has carried out campaigns of intimidation against the late great radio commentator Paul Harvey, former Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Va., Daniel Pipes, columnist Cal Thomas, talk show host Michael Graham, National Review magazine, Fox’s fictional drama “24” and many others for statements about Islam and terrorism that they found offensive.

This campaign of intimidation has had its effect. Many mainstream media figures, even those who like to think of themselves as fearless conservatives, have not wanted to discuss the elements of Islam that jihadists use to justify their actions—even to help sincere Muslim reformers formulate positive ways to deal with those elements. They fear the wrath of CAIR.

CAIR was also involved in the notorious “Flying Imams” lawsuit. “The Flying Imams,” as they became popularly known, were six imams who sued US Airways in 2007 after they were removed from a flight for suspicious behavior. They also attempted—unsuccessfully, as it turned out, due to quick action by the then-Republican majority in Congress—to sue the passengers who reported them. If the Imams’ suit had succeeded, no one would have dared report suspicious behavior in an airport or airplane, for fear of being sued, and jihad terrorists would have had a free hand in American airports.

The lawyer for the Flying Imams was Omar T. Mohammedi, who as of 2006 was president of CAIR’s New York chapter.

If CAIR succeeds in smearing and silencing all those who dare to speak about the elements of Islam that jihadists use to justify their actions and who dare to call upon CAIR itself and other groups to go beyond vaguely-worded condemnations of terrorism to real efforts to teach against the jihad doctrine of Islamic supremacism in schools and mosques, what chance will Americans have to resist the spread of that doctrine?

WEAK CONDEMNATION OF TERRORISM

CAIR wants us very much to believe that they abhor terrorism and stand together with non-Muslim Americans in resisting it. When asked whether they condemn terrorism, CAIR officials frequently point to the organization’s endorsement of a fatwa, or religious ruling, against terrorism issued July 28, 2005, by the Fiqh Council of North America, an 18-member board of Islamic scholars and leaders. The declaration received international publicity as one of the few instances after the Sept. 11 attacks in which Muslims unequivocally declared that those attacks were carried out in defiance of the principles of Islam.

The fatwa affirmed “Islam’s absolute condemnation of terrorism and religious extremism.” It declared that “Islam strictly condemns religious extremism and the use of violence against innocent lives. There is no justification in Islam for extremism or terrorism.” Foreshadowing the State Department’s 2008 guidelines directing American officials to refer to jihadists as nondenominational criminals or evildoers, it declared, “Targeting civilians’ life and property through suicide bombings or any other method of attack is haram—or forbidden—and those who commit these barbaric acts are criminals, not ‘martyrs.’”

The Fiqh Council declared that “all acts of terrorism targeting civilians are haram (forbidden) in Islam.”

Unfortunately, this is not the unequivocal condemnation of jihad violence that many non-Muslim analysts have taken them to be. The chief weakness is that the Fiqh Council doesn’t define their terms. While non-Muslim Westerners may assume a particular meaning for “terrorism,” “innocent lives” and “civilians,” these are in fact hotly debated terms in the Islamic world.

For example, Anjem Choudary, a spokesman for a leading jihad group in Britain, told an interviewer that the victims of the July 7, 2005, bombings in London were not “innocent,” because they were not Muslims: “When we say innocent people, we mean Muslims. As far as non-Muslims are concerned, they have not accepted Islam. As far we are concerned, that is a crime against God. … As far as Muslims are concerned, you’re innocent if you are a Muslim. Then you are innocent in the eyes of God. If you are non-Muslim, then you are guilty of not believing in God.”

This argument is by no means uncommon in the Muslim world. According to a 2002 report in The Guardian, a Palestinian Arab jihadist expressed a similar sentiment in justifying attacks on Israeli civilians. “There are no civilians in Israel. All the Israelis are military, all of them,” he insisted. “They are all military, and they all have weapons and guns, and the moment they are called up, they are going to be using their weapons against me.” The Tunisian jihadist Rashid al-Ghannushi has issued a fatwa to the same effect, declaring, “There are no civilians in Israel. The population—males, females and children—are the army reserve soldiers, and thus can be killed.”

What’s more, this view—that there are no innocent civilians among Muslims’ perceived enemies—is not confined to some extremist Islamic fringe. The internationally influential Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, who has won praise from Islamic scholar John Esposito for engaging in a “reformist interpretation of Islam and its relationship to democracy, pluralism and human rights,” addressed the morality of suicide bombings against Israeli women and civilians thus: “Israeli women are not like women in our society, because Israeli women are militarised. Secondly, I consider this type of martyrdom operation as indication of justice of Allah almighty. Allah is just. Through his infinite wisdom he has given the weak what the strong do not possess and that is the ability to turn their bodies into bombs like the Palestinians do.”

HAMAS AND HEZBOLLAH: TERROR GROUPS OR NOT?

The fact that a significant number of Muslims, including such high-profile figures as Qaradawi, hold such views illustrates the inadequacy of the statements issued by the Fiqh Council of North America.

Were the issuers of these statements and their supporters such as CAIR really trying to convince their fellow Muslims that contemporary jihad terrorism is illegitimate? If so, it was not enough to condemn “terrorism”—not enough, that is, if the council was trying to win over to their point of view people who don’t believe that what they are doing constitutes terrorism at all. It is not enough to condemn the killing of “innocent civilians” when the jihadists believe their victims are neither innocent nor civilians.

Moreover, CAIR officials have repeatedly declined to condemn Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist groups. Although they will issue such a condemnation when it’s politically necessary—such as Awad’s disavowal of Hamas during Keith Ellison’s election campaign—CAIR representatives really don’t like to speak ill of such organizations. When a reporter from the Los Angeles Times asked CAIR spokeswoman Munira Syeda to condemn Hamas or Hezbollah as terrorist groups, she responded, “I don’t understand what the relevance is.” In April 2007, I participated in a heated hour-long radio debate with CAIR’s Hussam Ayloush, during which I asked him repeatedly to condemn Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist groups. He refused.

For CAIR in general, it was a revealing, and emblematic, moment.
