Sun Journal Letters to the Editor--New Bern, NC

Marriage Amendment Letters:

Of the 12 letters published today on the Marriage Amendment 9 were against and 3 for it. Shows the paper’s left leaning doesn’t it. Not surprising of those 9 folks against the amendment were 5 Democrats and 3 unaffiliated and one person who does not appear to be from Craven County at all. The three folks who wrote in favor of protecting the sanctity of marriage 2 were Republicans, again, not surprising. Most of the letters were out and out lies and nonsense.

For the real facts on the issue:  Read “What It Does” a letter fro Jerry Schill, Co-Chairman of the Craven-Pamlico Christian Coalition, my friend and a very honorable man.

Sun Journal Letter to the Editor: What it does by Jerry Schill

Regarding the Marriage Amendment:

• Gay marriage and domestic partnerships are illegal under CURRENT North Carolina law, passed by the General Assembly.

• If the Marriage Amendment passes on May 8, gay marriage and domestic partnerships will CONTINUE to be illegal. However, the definition will have the added protection of a constitutional amendment. The amendment makes it clear that marriage shall be the only domestic legal union recognized in North Carolina.

• The passage of the Marriage Amendment will not ADD any rights to gays but neither does it take any away.

• The amendment does NOT take away private contractual rights for unmarried couples.

• The amendment does NOT prohibit local governments or the UNC System from providing benefits to unmarried partners.

• The amendment does NOT interfere with benefits that private employers provide to gay couples.

• The amendment will NOT harm North Carolina’s economy. Gay marriage has been illegal in our state for several years, and the amendment will not change that fact from an employer’s or business standpoint.

So, if it’s already illegal and does not ADD any gay rights or take any away, what’s the point with all this?

Activist judges! By putting the measure in our state’s constitution, we add protection from judicial activism which has been way too prevalent in our country.

Another question is why are Christians so engaged on this issue? I certainly cannot speak for all but I know many of us have been concerned about the eroding moral fabric and the disintegration of our family structure for a lot of years. We have witnessed what’s been happening but have done little to reverse it. We have had little help from the leadership in our churches, especially from the pulpit. We love our state and our country, and have decided to get engaged rather than just go to another meeting and talk about it and complain about “those in charge”.

To paraphrase Popeye the Sailor Man, “That’s all we can stands and we can’t stands no more!”

On May 8, please vote FOR the Marriage Amendment, which will define marriage IN OUR CONSTITUTION between one man and one woman as the only legal union recognized in North Carolina!

NC Reneagade: Love and the Marriage Amendment

The upcoming marriage amendment in North Carolina has been twisted into an issue between homosexuality and its place in a Christian nation. The Bible clearly outlines in both the Old and the New Testament that homosexuality is a sin. Any church that preaches otherwise is not teaching the Word of God. A comment on an earlier article used a fallacious argument concerning this issue stating that Jesus said to love one another. Although this is true, this is twisting the Word of God by not understanding the definition of love in different contexts. Part of this problem is due to translation from Hebrew, Greek, Latin into English and most recently, politically correct English. There are four different types of love in the Bible. Our English translations do not differentiate between the four types of love and our churches are at fault for not teaching what may be offensive to their parishioners.

My response to the comment concerning Jesus saying to love one another is shown here:

What is the judgment for those who twist the Word of God:

Romans 1

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Which was countered back with this:

You can’t twist this. This is directly from the Son of God.

New International Version (NIV)

John 13:34-35

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Here are the four types of love in the Bible that will hopefully clarify this issue:

Agape is selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love, the highest of the four types of love in the Bible.

This Greek word and variations of it are found throughout the New Testament. Agape perfectly describes the kind of love Jesus Christ has for his Father and for his followers:

Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them. (John 14:21, NIV)

Eros is the physical, sensual love between a husband and wife.

Although this Greek term does not appear in the Bible, eros, or erotic love, is portrayed in the Old Testament book, The Song of Solomon. God is very clear in his Word. Sex outside of marriage is forbidden.

God created humans male and female and instituted marriage in the Garden of Eden. Within marriage, sex is used for emotional and spiritual bonding and for reproduction.

Philia means close friendship or brotherly love in Greek. It is one of the four types of love in the Bible.

Philia and other forms of this Greek noun are found throughout the New Testament. Christians are frequently exhorted to love their fellow Christians:

Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. (Romans 12:10 ESV)

Storge is family love, the bond among mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers.

As with eros, this Greek term does not appear in the Bible. However, many examples of family love are found in Scripture, such as the love and mutual protection among Noah and his wife, their sons and daughters-in-law in Genesis; the love of Jacob for his sons; and the strong love the sisters Martha and Mary in the gospels had for their brother Lazarus.

The family was a vital part of ancient Jewish culture. In the Ten Commandments, God charges his people to:

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12, NIV)

If two people want to have a civil union and enjoy the same rights and benefits as provided by the government, that is between them and the government. Marriage however is a union between God, one man and one woman by definition. You do not need a marriage certificate issued by the “state” in order to be married in the eyes of our Lord, you need a marriage covenant overseen by the church. This is another example where we allow the state to control our religion. Using Eros love as a substitute for Philia love does not justify homosexuality or its application in the holy union known as marriage.

Let us be clear: this issue is not about marriage but an attack on religion. As for the argument that Jesus said to love another (in the context of Eros love), then this argument can next be expanded to allow a man to love children in the same manner.

Legislative Update

Legislators returned to Raleigh this week, but this latest special session was over almost as soon as it began. Although there was speculation that substantive policy issues might be considered, including rumors of a proposal to expand gambling for the Cherokee, legislators stuck to the task of passing bills to correct errors in the redistricting maps that had been approved earlier this year.

Traditionally, the legislature would not be scheduled to return until the regular short session on May 16, 2012, but in the adjournment resolution passed late Monday evening, three additional special sessions were scheduled: a three-day session starting on November 27, and brief sessions from February 16-18 and April 23-25. It is likely that these sessions, especially the one later this month, will deal with policy decisions that will impact the family.

Abstinence--Congressman Randy Hultgren (R-IL) has sponsored H.R. 2874-The Abstinence Education Reallocation Act, a bill to renew the emphasis of abstinence education in public schools and reduce the funding disparities between abstinence education and comprehensive sex education. While the bill has 47 cosponsors so far, including North Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-2) and Rep. Walter Jones (R-3), the National Abstinence Education Association is seeking to gain as many cosponsors as possible for the bill.

Cohabitation Linked to Unstable Families

North Carolina Family Policy Council
Special Report - August 17, 2011

Children today are more likely to spend time in a cohabiting household and to suffer a myriad of negative lifetime effects as a result, than they are to experience the divorce of their parents, according to a new report released Wednesday by a team of family scholars from some of the nation’s leading educational institutions. The report, “Why Marriage Matters: 30 Conclusions from the Social Sciences (Third Edition),” is the long-awaited comprehensive summary of the latest research pointing to the importance of marriage to child wellbeing. Co-sponsored by the Center for Marriage and Families at the Institute for American Values and by the National Marriage Project (NMP) at the University of Virginia, the report is written by a team of 18 scholars chaired by W. Bradford Wilcox, director of the NMP.

The report’s major finding is that cohabitation, which it notes has increased 14-fold since 1970, has replaced divorce as the main contributor to the rising rates of family instability in the United States. In fact, by the age of 12, more children today will spend time in a cohabiting family than will experience the divorce of their parents (see figure 2 from report). While a decrease in parental divorce is certainly a good thing, the increasing rates of cohabitation, particularly for children, is not, because, as the report points out, “cohabitation is not the functional equivalent of marriage.”

“In a striking turn of events, the divorce rate for married couples with children has returned almost to the levels we saw before the divorce revolution kicked in during the 1970s. Nevertheless, family instability is on the rise for American children as a whole,” explains Professor Wilcox in a press release. “This seems in part to be because more couples are having children in cohabiting unions, which are very unstable. This report also indicates that children in cohabiting households are more likely to suffer from a range of emotional and social problems—drug use, depression, and dropping out of high school—compared to children in intact, married families.”

Among the key findings in report regarding cohabitation:

About 24 percent of all children are born to cohabiting parents, which the report notes is more than the percentage of children born to single mothers.

An additional 20 percent of children will spend some time in a cohabiting household with an unrelated adult (often because of the divorce of their parents), meaning that “more than four in 10 children are exposed to a cohabiting relationship.”

Cohabiting parents with children are more likely to break up before the child turns 12 than married parents with children (see figure 5 from the report).

Judge Roy Moore -- Poem

The following is a poem written by Judge Roy Moore from Alabama ... Judge Moore was sued by the ACLU for displaying the Ten Commandments in his courtroom foyer. He has been stripped of his judgeship and now they are trying to strip his right to practice law in Alabama ! The judge's poem sums it up quite well.

America the beautiful, or so you used to be.
Land of the Pilgrims' pride; I'm glad they'll never see.
Babies piled in dumpsters, Abortion on demand,
Oh, sweet land of liberty; your house is on the sand.

Our children wander aimlessly, poisoned by cocaine
choosing to indulge their lusts, when God has said abstain
From sea to shining sea, our Nation turns away
From the teaching of God's love and a need to always pray

We've kept God in our temples, how callous we have grown.
When earth is but His footstool, and Heaven is His throne.
We've voted in a government that's rotting at the core,
Appointing Godless Judges; who throw reason out the door,

Too soft to place a killer in a well deserved tomb,
But brave enough to kill a baby before he leaves the womb.
You think that God's not angry, that our land's a moral slum?
How much longer will He wait before His judgment comes?

How are we to face our God, from Whom we cannot hide?
What then is left for us to do, but stem this evil tide?
If we who are His children, will humbly turn and pray;
Seek His holy face and mend our evil way:

Then God will hear from Heaven; and forgive us of our sins,
He'll heal our sickly land and those who live within.
But, America the Beautiful, If you don't - then you will see,
A sad but Holy God withdraw His hand from Thee.

~~Judge Roy Moore~~

This says it all. May we all ffer our prayers for Judge Moore to be blessed and for America to wake up and realize what we need to do to keep OUR America the Beautiful.
IN GOD WE TRUST!

WND:

Family groups horrified by mandatory 'gender' classes for children

June 4, 2011
By Bob Unruh

© 2011 WND

Pro-family organizations across the nation are expressing shock and alarm over a new wave of homosexual indoctrination developing in public schools – especially in California – where parents are not even given the option of withdrawing their kids from the mandatory lessons on being "gay" or more.

"Young children are being taught that they can choose to be a boy or a girl – or both," said officials at Mass Resistance, one of the leading organizations across the country defending the fact that students are boys or girls.

"Boys, for example, should be comfortable wearing girls' clothes and nail polish, etc. And there aren't just two genders, there can be a range. And, of course, the school does not allow parents to opt their kids out," the organization said.

How did America come to this? Read about it in "The Marketing of Evil: How Radicals, Elitists, and Pseudo-Experts Sell Us Corruption Disguised as Freedom"

It was citing the work of an elementary school in Oakland, where officials allowed an outside advocacy organization, Gender Spectrum, to tell young students that sexuality is what they want it to be, not necessarily what nature endowed them to be.

A Fox News report on the issue said the school officials defended their actions by explaining that all student "behaviors" have to be accepted and reinforced.

Baloney, said Brad Dacus, of Pacific Justice Institute. He said such indoctrination just creates gender "confusion" for young children.

Officials with SaveCalifornia.com also have been highlighting the egregious results when mandatory gender lessons are adopted by public schools.

The organization's president, Randy Thomasson, is concerned because of previous mandatory teaching standards adopted in California, as well as pending legislation that would require profiling as role models lesbians, homosexuals and those with other alternative sexual lifestyle choices.

His organization has published a resource page for links to answers on questions such as, "Is there a 'gay gene'?" and "Is homosexual healthy?"

Thomasson has reported that there have been developing significant issues over the state's legally recommended recognition of "Harvey Milk Day," too. Milk was an openly homosexual elected official.

Obama Administration to Expand Family Medical Leave Act to Gay and Lesbian Employees

Posted By Eve Zibel On June 22, 2010 @ 4:32 pm In "Don't Ask Don't Tell", Family Medical Leave

The Labor Department is poised to announce new regulations this week that order U.S. employers to give gay employees equal treatment under the law, allowing those workers unpaid time off under the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Critics say the Obama administration is going too far. “They're trying to redefine marriage and family by these arbitrary policies with no debate by congress, no public discussion about it," says Carrie Gordon Earll of Focus on the Family.

Gay rights activists, who strongly supported President Obama’s campaign, wish the administration would go further. “It's not repealing the defense of marriage act, it's a small step but it's an important one," says Brian Moulton of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

The announcement comes as the president declares June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender month, with an event Tuesday night at the White House to celebrate it. But even as some are ready to fete the occasion, the president is already creating a new firestorm, with his recent Mother’s Day and Father’s Day proclamations which referenced families that include “two mothers” and “two fathers,” respectively, a move conservatives criticized and called “divisive.” Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton said the president “was just trying to be inclusive of all sorts of families.”

But at an event celebrating Father’s Day on Monday, Obama talked, as he has before, about how he missed having both a father and a mother present while growing up. "He [Obama’s father] left my family when I was two years old. And while I was lucky to have a wonderful mother and loving grandparents who poured everything they had into me and my sister, I still felt the weight of that absence. It's something that leaves a hole in a child's life that no government can fill,” Obama said.

President Obama has said he does not support same-sex marriage, but Carrie Gordon Earll of Focus on the Family says the latest effort by the Labor Department is a unilateral move by the Obama White House designed to eventually bypass the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

“This is just one more example of where the Obama administration is really bypassing the defense of marriage act that defines marriage as one man and one woman,” Earll told Fox News.

Moulton of HRC, a group working on behalf of the LGBT community, says the latest move by the administration is a step in the right direction, toward perhaps an eventual repeal of DOMA. “Certainly it's not medical leave to take care of a partner, it's not repealing the defense of marriage act, it's a small step but it's an important one.”

Meanwhile, it’s not just the Family Medical Leave Act the Obama administration is handling that pertains to the LGBT community. The White House is also focused on the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” – something the president said he would work on in his State of the Union address earlier this year.

“We would like to see it happen sooner, I think we keep moving along a pace and the Pentagon will finish its review and we are hopeful and confident president is going to move toward that certification as soon as possible,” says Moulton.

Critics feel that the military’s policy on gay service members will be one more step toward a further erosion of the Defense of Marriage Act. “The repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell will set the stage for the federal government to have to recognize same sex relationships of identified gays and lesbians in the military," says Earll.

While candidate Obama was popular with the gay and lesbian community for saying he would repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," he began to run into trouble with gay and lesbian organizations once in office. In October of last year, the President had to once again affirm his pledge of repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell at an annual dinner after months of what the community called stalling tactics.

"We cannot afford to cut from our ranks people with the critical skills we need to fight any more than we can afford to force those willing to do so into careers encumbered and compromised by having to live a lie, " Obama said at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner in Washington on October 10, 2009."So, I'm working with the Pentagon, its leadership and the members of the House and Senate on ending this policy. I will end Don't Ask, Don't Tell. That's my commitment to you." That statement, at the time, was met with applause from those in the room.
