Dick Cheney: Obama would rather spend money on food stamps than a strong military

Former Vice President Dick Cheney sharply criticized President Obama for reducing the size of the American military including plans to reduce the Army to the smallest force since before World War II.

Cheney pointed out that Obama's plans to cut the military were "over the top," citing "enormous long-term damage" to the military.

Cheney said Obama's decision was made for budget reasons, not any strategic goal.

"He would much rather spend the money on food stamps than he would a strong military or support for our troops," he said.

The first plan is the Penny Plan. Introduced in 2011, it aims to balance the budget by 2018 by cutting one penny in non-interest federal outlays from each dollar the government spends. Rather than cut from expected spending, the Penny Plan cuts from today’s spending. It also aims to cap spending at 18% of GDP, which is at least one-quarter less than today’s spending levels.
The plan is spelled out in more detail on our website,  but you get the idea. Real cuts. Unlike the “cuts” in discussion on Capitol Hill.

Of course, we know that the establishment in Washington will take a plan as simple as this seriously. As the "fiscal cliff" looms we will see them agree to a bad deal that raises taxes and increases spending which will surely have a devastating affect on the economy, inflating prices for everyday consumers and increasing the number of people who are unemployed. So, in the unlikely event that Washington will prove us wrong, we DARE them to take up the Penny Plan and actually make real cuts in spending.

Call your Member of Congress. Let him or her know that Speaker Boehner should present the Penny Plan to President Obama instead of raising your taxes.

12 Days of Solutions - Saving the American Dream

Today, Day 3 of 12 Days of Solutions, finds Washington still fighting over how many of your hard-earned dollars you don’t deserve to keep. Unfortunately, all of the plans in discussion are woefully inadequate.

This lack of attention to quality plans is why Tea Party Patriots is proud to bring a comprehensive plan to balance the budget and enact tax reform to your attention. That plan is the Heritage Foundation’s “Saving the American Dream” budget proposal.

How will this plan save the American Dream? Unlike the proposals being bandied about in Congress, it will:

1. Enact legitimate tax reform.
2. Make Medicare and Social Security solvent for generations.
3. Eliminate much of the unconstitutional non-defense discretionary spending in subsidies, education, and other areas of the federal budget.
4. Get rid of the Affordable Care Act.
5. Balance the budget in 10 years.

Unfortunately, our elected leaders have ignored the plan. It is therefore up to us to pressure them into bringing it forward during the fiscal cliff debate. Of course we know that the Washington establishment will never bring this plan forward, but we DARE them to do something to actually fix the problems instead of kicking the can down the road for us to worry about in the future. Call your Members of Congress and tell them to bring the Saving the American Dream plan up for a vote!

12 Days of Solutions - Cut Taxes to Promote Economic Growth

Once again, Washington is discussing how to take more of your money under the guise of “helping” you. In reality, they are talking about covering for the political establishment’s unwillingness to balance the budget, but they hide that behind talk of taxing “the rich.”

Yesterday, we outlined what the Penny Plan does for the federal budget – namely, balance non-interest spending. Today, we’re urging you to call your Member of Congress to ask him or her to support the basic platform of cutting tax rates across the board.

Over the last 50 years, tax cuts have proven to drastically increase the dynamic nature of the American economy. Whether under President Kennedy or President Reagan, the economy was always stronger after tax cuts.

Unfortunately, Washington refuses to admit its problem is spending, not a lack of tax dollars going to Washington bureaucrats. We urge you to call your Member of Congress and tell him or her to lower taxes overall, not go along with the massive tax hikes coming in 2013.

‘Supercommittee’ Fails to Reach Agreement, Obama Threatens to Veto Any Effort to Get Rid of $1.2T in Automatic Cuts

(The Blaze/AP) Congress’ supercommittee conceded ignominious defeat Monday in its quest to conquer a government debt that stands at a staggering $15 trillion, unable to overcome deep and enduring political divisions over taxes and spending.

Stock prices plummeted at home and across debt-scarred Europe as the panel ended its brief, secretive existence. Republicans and Democrats alike pointed fingers of blame, maneuvering for political advantage in advance of 2012 elections less than a year away. Both sides agreed action was still required, somehow, and soon.

“Despite our inability to bridge the committee’s significant differences, we end this process united in our belief that the nation’s fiscal crisis must be addressed and that we cannot leave it for the next generation to solve,” the panel’s two co-chairs, Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Tex., said in a somber statement.

They added it was not possible to present “any bipartisan agreement” – omitting any reference to the goal of $1.2 trillion in cuts over a decade that had been viewed as a minimum for success.

President Barack Obama held a press conference at 5:45 p.m. Monday to discuss the committee’s impotence, and threatened that he will veto any effort to get rid of automatic spending cuts that would take effect in 2013 if Congress can’t find other ways of trimming government deficits:

CQ ROLL CALL HIGHLIGHTS: Daily Briefing--November 16, 2011

Today In Washington

THE HOUSE: Convened at 10, will begin legislating at noon and will be done for the day by 7. There will be a nearly unanimous vote to clear legislation combining a pair of new tax credits for hiring veterans (a sliver of the Obama jobs package) with the repeal of a 3 percent tax withholding from government contracts (a sliver of the GOP jobs agenda). But the debate will be much more contentious on the first pro-gun bill advanced by the Republicans since they took control this year. It would allow people with concealed weapon permits in their home state the right to carry a concealed gun in other states.

THE SENATE: Convened at 10 and is debating what seems on the surface like a relatively non-controversial $33 billion spending bill for the Energy Department and the Army Corps of Engineers. (Reid’s effort to combine it with two other fiscal 2012 appropriations measures fell apart yesterday in a welter of objections about its spending totals and language allowing American banks to do business in Cuba.)

Reid signaled that, if the energy and water debate bogs down, he was ready to quickly drop the bill and turn instead to the defense authorization measure updated by Armed Services yesterday. He also issued a vague exhortation for senators and their aides to keep their Thanksgiving week travel plans flexible — especially if anyone makes parliamentary trouble for the military policy bill.
THE WHITE HOUSE: Obama is sound asleep in Canberra, where it’s almost 4 on Thursday morning. He’ll spend his second day in Australia addressing Parliament and traveling to a military base in Darwin. The remote northern coastal town is where 2,500 Marines will be stationed permanently under an agreement the president and Prime Minister Julia Gerard announced yesterday — much to the consternation of the Chinese government, which doesn’t appreciate the U.S. effort to become a military counterweight to China in the Pacific Rim.

BASIC MATH: The sum of today’s supercommittee tea leaves is that there’s just enough hope for a deal left that Reid and Boehner are willing to enter the fray — although maybe only long enough to conclude that the two sides cannot be bridged, and certainly not in the time available. While the formal legislative language has to be done by Monday and the committee doesn’t have to vote until a week from today, a general consensus has emerged that there needs to be a handshake by the day after tomorrow (maybe push-able until Saturday) for the paperwork and the budgetary scorekeeping to get done in time.

Pushed hard by John Kerry — who sees this budget deal as his legacy-maker — Democrats are now willing to drop their revenue number to $800 billion (from $1 trillion) in a final attempt to get to a deal. But in return, they’re going to insist that entitlement curbs over the next decade be held to that new, lower number as well. And the Republicans are showing every sign they’re going to spurn that offer. Not only do they want to extract more from Medicare and Medicaid, but much more importantly, they also are already so far outside their own comfort zone with their stated willingness to go for as much as $300 billion in new revenues.
Co-Chairman Jeb Hensarling signaled as much last night when he said of his side, “We have gone as far as we feel we can go” on taxes. That was an acknowledgment of the reality that — even with Pat Toomey, the small-government advocate turned senator, putting his name atop the tax plan, the leadership would be hard-pressed to corral enough members of the GOP rank and file to push such a deal to enactment.

The flurry of top leadership meetings last night could also be a signal that the supercommittee has revealed that it has essentially abandoned hope of reaching a $1.2 trillion deal, and that the two parties’ members are looking for guidance from the top Hill brass about whether they should walk away altogether — or roll out a bill worth less than that amount (the current best guess is they have agreement on about $600 billion in savings) that largely avoids addressing taxes and entitlements. The supercommittee is allowed to create a proposal that cuts just a few hundred billion dollars — and then the difference between that figure and $1.2 trillion would be the size of the across-the-board defense and civilian spending cuts. And shrinking the size of that sequester would at least be a way to tamp down talk that the self-imposed punishment should be skirted altogether.
EPARTURES AND ARRIVALS: Minibus No. 2 is permanently on blocks, and even the vestige that remains before the Senate — the Energy-Water bill — may be abandoned in the next 24 hours. (Reid really, really wants the bill to pass because it would put the Senate on record against any funding for the nuclear waste storage center under Nevada’s Yucca Mountain, but he may be forced to relent in the face of a wave of GOP amendments designed to stoke the Solyndra controversy.)designed to stoke the Solyndra controversy.)

What it means: Appropriators will be spending the next month doing what they’ve been fighting against — but what’s been expected of them — all year: Assembling a behemoth appropriations package to handle the great majority of discretionary appropriations for the nine months of fiscal 2012 that remain. The must-pass, and generally bipartisan, Pentagon spending bill will be the vehicle that carries all the other measures.

That scenario assumes enactment by this weekend of Minibus No. 1, the three-bill domestic spending package that also keeps the rest of the government running until Dec. 16. That’s going to happen, but not without some sweating among the House Republican whips, who are now working hard to hold the number of GOP defections to no more than 40. (That number of “no” votes would mean 20 Democrats would have to vote “yes” to assure passage.) Their challenge is being made significantly more difficult now that two prominent conservative groups, the Club for Growth and Heritage Action, have come out against the bill — by putting it on their “key vote” lawmaker-approval scorecards — because in their view it doesn’t cut spending enough (less than 1 percent overall for the programs covered) and would increase the maximum size of home loans that can receive FHA guarantees.

Remember…

•We want REAL spending cuts. No more gimmicks, no more lies. Make REAL CUTS and prioritize!
•Increasing spending more slowly than someone else is still increasing spending.
•When you increase spending by $5 and then cut $3, you haven’t made a cut. Your total spending is still $2 higher than it was before. This is a gimmick. Stop it. Now.
•If you say you’re cutting $3, then cut $3. This year. (And in case it’s not clear to your Rep., $3 is an example. A whole lot more than $3 needs to be cut!)
•All of the so-called cuts passed by Congress always get spread out over ten years, but this Congress has no authority over the next Congress and those cuts from this year can easily be overturned. Therefore, real cuts are cuts that occur within in the same fiscal year.

•Our country’s national debt has now surpassed our Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Now is the time for real cuts, not fake cuts.

Budget tricks helped Obama save programs from cuts (spending cuts exaggerated)

WASHINGTON – The historic $38 billion in budget cuts resulting from at-times hostile bargaining between Congress and the Obama White House were accomplished in large part by pruning money left over from previous years, using accounting sleight of hand and going after programs President Barack Obama had targeted anyway.


Such moves permitted Obama to save favorite programs — Pell grants for poor college students, health research and “Race to the Top” aid for public schools, among others — from Republican knives, according to new details of the legislation released Tuesday morning.

And big holes in foreign aid and Environmental Protection Agency accounts were patched in large part. Republicans also gave up politically treacherous cuts to the Agriculture Department’s food inspection program.

The details of the agreement reached late Friday night just ahead of a deadline for a partial government shutdown reveal a lot of one-time savings and cuts that officially “score” as cuts to pay for spending elsewhere, but often have little to no actual impact on the deficit.

As a result of the legerdemain, Obama was able to reverse many of the cuts passed by House Republicans in February when the chamber approved a bill slashing this year’s budget by more than $60 billion.
