Gasoline Taxes Are Going Up

By Sara Noble   Gas & oil companies make about a 7 cent per gallon profit on every gallon of gas sold while the state and federal government make an average of about a 49.5 cent per gallon profit or 12% (depending on the state).  (More in NC.)

The profits for gas & oil companies does not include the profits from refining (about 29.6 cents per gallon).

Gas stations make almost nothing and need to make their money from car repairs and convenience shops.

The government is not satisfied with their take of the profits for doing nothing.

The states governors are running out of cash and are heading back to the gasoline tax kitty. Many plan to raise the gas taxes to cover transportation costs such as road repair but the money will continue to be used for other government purposes.

The federal government will be back at the trough soon as well.

It is a regressive tax, meaning everyone gets hit the same. When this doesn’t work, they will go to the “tax by the miles you drive” tax.

Ben Husch, a National Conference of State Legislatures director, is calling it a “bold action.” Raising taxes is not only “revenue” and an “investment,” it can now be a “bold action.”

Two states already approved the tax. Wyoming’s tax will go from 14 cents to 24 cents a gallon in July and California’s tax will go up 3.5 cents to about 52 cents tax per gallon.

Maryland’s O’Malley wants to raise the taxes by 4% in 2014, bringing their gas tax to 43.7 cents in five years, almost doubling their rate by 2018.

Keystone Pipeline is Key to Future

Everything we will ever need to know about the Obama Administration may come down to a single decision. And that is whether Obama, along with newly sworn in Secretary of State John Kerry, approve the Keystone XL pipeline from the Alberta tar sands to the U.S. For, contained in that decision is not just the future energy independence of North America — the U.S. currently depends on foreign sources for 45 percent of our fuel— but perhaps the future prosperity of the American economy. If completed, the expanded pipeline — there actually is another Keystone pipeline from Alberta operated by TransCanada that already delivers about 590,000 barrels of oil a day — will add another 500,000 barrels a day to the mix.


The fact the Chinese are waiting in the wings to claim this energy for themselves would be reason enough to approve it. Beijing has offered to pay for building an alternative pipeline to the Pacific coast to have the oil shipped there. For now, global production keeps up with global demand, but developing economies like China and India — oil importers both — invariably are leading to higher demand. Which means every drop we fail to develop here, whether in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, or fail to gain access to, as in Canada, is driving up prices at the pump.

The recent run-up in gasoline prices provides yet another warning to the Obama Administration of the types of price pressures the American people will be faced with in the future should we fail to become energy independent. Since Jan. alone, the price for a gallon of regular gasoline has jumped by $.44 to $3.69 on Feb. 18,reports the Energy Information Agency.

Gas Prices: We Are Being Played by the Government

As gas prices rise and demand decreases due to economic conditions, the following excerpts show how energy and food are being used by the government to manipulate these commodities for their own purposes.  The Obama administration's views on energy have been inconsistent and without logic. The coal industry has been decimated by government regulations and labor unions to make the cost of this form of energy necessarily skyrocket.

The law requires 40% of corn production in the United States to be used to make ethanol. The energy required to make a gallon of ethanol is approximately the same energy that is released in its combustion so the net energy production is zero. The reality is that ethanol reduces the mileage per gallon so the average American must buy about 10% more ethanol based gasoline to drive the same amount of miles.

Who wins? The government collects another 10% in taxes. What are the consequences?

3. Motor/hose corrosion
4. Higher corn prices
5. Higher livestock prices

We are being played by the government but the real goal is control. Whoever controls your food and energy controls you. Liberty guarantees our freedom and it will be defended. How do I know? The American summer is in full swing. The calendar says it is summer. The temperature gauge says it is summer and even with the metrological calendar it is now officially summer.


Americans are enjoying many of our traditional summer pastimes. We are watching and playing baseball, going to the pool and some Americans can still take vacations.

While we try to enjoy this summer, could we be looking at the last American summer?

A few weeks ago, Donald Trump accused Obama of making a deal with Saudi Arabia to pump more oil to drive prices down before the election.

Trump could be right. Reuters reported two days ago that Saudi Arabia had pushed its daily production to 10 million barrels a day, creating an oil surplus.


Gas prices, instead of soaring to $4 or even $5 a gallon this summer are now on a slow steady descent to $3 a gallon.

But what happens after Obama is reelected?

Gas pricing: The reality

As we suffer from much higher gas prices at the pump, many unfounded rumors swirl around as to how the price of auto gas at the pump is established. Basically, it is simply the Law of Supply and Demand.

Crude oil, irrespective of where it comes from, is a global commodity and, as such, is traded across the global commodity market -- just like wheat, corn, or cattle futures. The global market price for crude oil is based on the amount of crude oil that is up out of the ground and in transit by sea, by 18-wheelers, in the pipelines, in storage tanks, and at the oil refineries.


Based on fairly accurate knowledge of how much crude oil is up out of the ground, the world price for crude oil is established. When the supply goes down, the price goes up. When the supply increases, the price goes down.

The radical environmentalists spread the rumor that the U.S. exports oil to other countries and, therefore, does not need to increase its domestic oil production. Actually, the U.S. is a net importer of crude oil. In short: we import far more crude oil than we are producing.

Nevertheless, we do export a small amount of “refined” oil products to other countries. Here’s why: Our oil refineries are designed to produce far more unleaded gasoline than diesel fuel. So, the reason diesel fuel is so much higher in price now than auto gas is because the supply of diesel fuel is so limited compared to the supply of unleaded auto gas. Higher diesel-fuel prices translate to higher prices for food and for all consumer goods.

While we do export a small amount of auto gas and other refined-oil products to Mexico and Canada, we do so in exchange for more diesel fuel for our trucking fleets and for other consumers of diesel fuel.

Due to the radical environmentalists, we have not built a new oil refinery in this country in 40 years. If the Obama Administration would allow them, new refineries would be designed to produce as much diesel fuel as auto gas. Unfortunately, to reconfigure our current refineries would be prohibitively expensive.

As for our abundant coal reserves, in 2008, Candidate Obama told ABC News that he plans to tax our coal-powered plants into bankruptcy and use the taxes collected to develop alternative energy sources.

Another rumor: Big Oil gets big tax breaks. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the tax preferences for all fossil-fuels amount to $2.5 billion per year, enough to run the U.S. government for about six hours. Renewable energy gets 68-percent of the tax breaks, fossil-fuels 15-percent, and nuclear energy four-percent. Twelve percent goes to energy efficiency incentives like Mr. Obama’s favorite $50.00 light bulbs, Solyndra solar that gave $370,000 in bonuses to 20 executives and went bankrupt, and the $250,000 per car subsidies for the failed Chevy Volt.

The number of unemployed blacks has risen from 12.6% at the end of George Bush's term to 15.8% today, a 25.4% increase, and finally, our national debt is up 34.4% from 10.627 trillion to 14,278 trillion *

NORTH CAROLINA GAS TAX

MESSAGE FROM FREEDOM WORKS:

The North Carolina Gas Tax is already the third highest in the nation and was just increased by 2 cents per gallon (July 1, 2011). It is projected to increase another 4 cents per gallon (January 1, 2012).


This increase will bring our gas tax to 39 cents per gallon, an 11% increase, making ours the 2nd highest gas tax in the nation!

Immediately after Thanksgiving, legislators return to Raleigh. We need to send a strong message that struggling North Carolinians cannot take another gas tax increase. OUR GAS TAX MUST BE CAPPED!

Another stunning stimulus success

In other governmental meddling news, TheDC's Neil Munro reports: "The White House decision to sell 30 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has failed to stop the upward march of oil prices, or to stimulate the economy. Prices for crude oil and gasoline dipped on the June 23 announcement, but have subsequently risen because expanding economies in Asia and South America are bidding up the market price, according to oil industry analysts. President Barack Obama's sale 'did not make a damn bit of difference,' said Dan Kish, vice president for policy at the Institute for Energy Research. Eight days after the announcement, 'the price of oil was higher than it was the day he announced' the release of oil from the reserve, Kish said." If you didn't know better, you'd start to think Obama has no idea what he's doing. Fortunately, you know better. Right?

China and other foreign markets likely benefited more than American drivers after President Obama tapped the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve to relieve price pressure, according to US News and World Report.


"Yes, the government can reduce the price of oil by suddenly releasing 30 million barrels from our reserves, but it does not help the United States in any way. Even if it reduces the price of gasoline by 10 cents a gallon and saves the average consumer $6 a month, it does so over the entire world, not just in our country," says financial analyst David Marotta, president of Marotta Wealth Management in Charlottesville, Va.

"Oil is bought and sold on a world market," said Marotta in his memo to clients. "So long as a free market exists for oil, the market will price oil appropriately. And the only effect of releasing our oil reserves is to lower world oil prices."

On Gas Prices, Obama Should Lead or Get Out of the Way

If we'd increased drilling 10 years ago things wouldn't be so bad today

Nearly a decade ago, the retail price for regular gasoline rose 26 cents per gallon in eight weeks to an all-time high of $1.75 per gallon. The government's Energy Information Administration (EIA) was tasked with an "Inquiry into August 2003 Gasoline Price Spike." We were waging the War on Terror, labor unions were striking, hurricanes threatened oil rigs while terrorists threatened refineries, demand for energy was creeping to a new high, and international markets drew down their inventories.

Senate Democrats today resorted to populist demagoguery in an attempt to avoid blame for high gas prices. They hauled the heads of the big oil companies up to Capitol Hill and berated them for making profits. They did it because they know we are unhappy with the high price of gas, and they want us to blame everyone -- oil companies, Wall Street speculators, SUV owners -- except Obama, Reid, Pelosi and their anti-energy policies.


This hearing won't do a thing to lower gas prices. Nor will the Democrats' preferred solution of raising taxes on oil companies. But the hearing did serve a useful purpose: It exposed the economic ignorance and arrogance of Washington's liberal elites.

During one exchange Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) accused Chevron CEO John Watson of being "deeply, profoundly, out of touch" for not endorsing the Democrats' calls for "shared sacrifice." To his credit, Watson fired back, telling Rockefeller, "I don't think the American people want shared sacrifice. I think they want shared prosperity."

Watson is right. Americans want policies that will create jobs and grow the economy. Unfortunately, we have gotten wasteful stimulus spending, a socialized medicine scheme and policies that seem designed to cripple America's domestic energy production. We are subsidizing Brazil's oil industry while we are attacking our own domestic energy industry. The liberal war on U.S. energy translates into a war on U.S. energy jobs.

SUN JOURNAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Fuel prices, by CCTA Chairman Raynor James

Fuel prices are steadily climbing. Our government is encouraging Brazil to drill and providing help for that effort while failing to issue permits to drill for our own oil.

Food prices aren’t far behind oil prices. It costs more to truck supplies to your grocery store. Right now, we can buy from local farmers and trade produce with our gardening friends, but just wait until the so-called “Food Safety Act” is fully implemented. Remember to thank Sen. Richard Burr when you get upset about this one. I like much of what Sen. Burr does, but his vote for the “Food Safety Act” infuriated me.

Unemployment is rampant. Our government taxes and regulates our entrepreneurs (who could solve this problem if left unfettered) to the point of making it almost impossible to create a profitable venture. Government is growing. Free enterprise is shrinking.

Americans’ innate rights are being treated as a gift from the government. That same government is steadily eroding our rights and removing choices from us. What part of “...the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” is so difficult to understand? Why should I be forced to use light bulbs that are difficult to read by, make everyone look jaundiced, and can kill the baby and the puppy if a bulb is broken and the clean up isn’t handled properly?

Our government is treating our friends as enemies, and our enemies as friends. Why are we in Libya? How many of the rebels we’re supporting are jehadists who would like to kill us?

We seem to be going along with the United Nations in favoring Palestine over Israel. Why? Why is much of our media silent about the increase in attacks against Israel?

Health care costs are rising. Access to good health care is shrinking. Because of its design, Obamacare will cost more and more while providing less and less. Unions and Obama cronies can get exemptions. For the rest of us, implementation is going forward apace even though a judge has declared it unconstitutional. Goodness, I wonder why my rights are being ignored by a government that flouts the U.S. Constitution in the face of a court’s ruling; silly me.

We can fix this mess if we will. Our state legislators in North Carolina are taking steps in many good directions. I’m very grateful to them for it. Our biggest problems are on the federal level.

We need to drill in all the places America has oil reserves. We need to build refineries. We need to build nuclear power plants. Carefully, but build them. Americans will buy “green” and “alternative” sources of power of our own free will if and when they are perfected to the point of being convenient, reliable, plentiful, and priced to sell. Until that happens, let us choose what works for us using market solutions and common sense. The price of gas does NOT need to “necessarily skyrocket.”

We need to rescind the “Food Safety Act.”

We need to free ourselves from Obamacare.

We need to reduce the federal budget by 42 percent. Almost 42 cents of every dollar the federal government spends is borrowed. That’s got to stop or we’re headed for disaster. Can’t you just imagine a family trying to continue to live like that? Does the work “bankruptcy” come to mind?

We need to refuse to raise the debt ceiling.

We need to dramatically curtail the EPA and the FCC. They’re hurting our businesses and threatening our freedom. In the case of the EPA, much of the threat comes from acting as if unproven theories are facts.

We need to back out of entitlements.

We need to resign from the United Nations. Our sovereignty is too important to allow the U.N. to erode it. We need our autonomy. We do not need a world government. The more removed from the people a government is, the worse it tends to be.

The only war we’re appropriately fighting is the war against Muslim jihadist fundamentalists who insist that we must die or be converted to Muslims. Not acknowledging this will not stop the war. If we don’t stop them, the jihadists will keep attacking us and infiltrating our culture until we’re dead or wearing burkas. We must stop them.

Our friends in Israel are fighting a similar war. They are in an even more vulnerable position than we are. We need to declare quite plainly that “any attack on Israel will be treated as an attack on the United States of America.”

We need to carefully follow the United States Constitution. The powers of the federal government need to be contracted to fit within its design once again.

Obama's media

Have you ever asked yourself the question: How in the world does Barack Hussein Obama get away with the things he does and the decisions he makes without even a peep from the mainstream media?


Obama has sat back and watched the price of gasoline double since he took office; he put 87,000 oil workers in the gulf out of work with an arbitrary stroke of the pen and doubled the national debt without a word of explanation. The press reported nothing more than his brilliance in these matters.

With the help of the wicked witch of San Francisco, he destroyed the best health-care system in the world while ignoring the will of the people. He sent U.S. Air Force equipment and personnel to bomb Libya without congressional approval, and the press heralded him as a great humanitarian. Never mind that half the world believed he should return his Nobel Peace Prize. Where was the critical analysis from the press so essential to a free and open democracy?

Mr. Obama spent hundreds of thousands of our tax dollars taking his wife to New York for "Date Night," wiped out secured creditors at General Motors while pouring billions of dollars into union-thug accounts. He even cracked jokes at the expense of handicapped children from the Special Olympics. All that didn't even raise as much as an eyebrow from the New York Times.

Of course, the press would not think to bring up one of Barack Hussein Obama's BFFs, Jeff Immelt from G.E. Immelt and his company received billions of dollars in loans and tax refunds while creating billions of profit for his corporation. The same crony Mr. Obama appointed to the Economic Recovery Advisory Council and the White House Council on Jobs. The same one! Yet the "journalists" at Time and Newsweek make no mention of the connection. Wouldn't you say there is at least a whiff of conflict of interest in that General Electric and Immelt are big donors to Barack Hussein Obama?

I don't have enough column space to mention the dozens of stupid or nefarious things this president has done without a peep of explanation as to why. Can any of us ever forget our president bowing the the Saudi king or state he had "been to all 57 states." I doubt there is one Marine who will ever forget when Mr. Obama referred to the Marine Corps as the Marine CORPSE. Unless those Marines now serve in the press.

If memory serves, I never saw any scrutiny of the president filling his Cabinet with tax cheats, appointing 32 czars who report only to him or how the president could summarily fire the head of a public company with the simple stroke of the executive pen. Nope, not a mention.

You would think some of the greenie weenies from the left over at the New York Times or MSNBC would have mentioned the inherent hypocrisy of burning 9,000 gallons of jet fuel on Air Force One to plant a tree on Earth Day, wouldn't you? But once again, not a peep.

Of course, who could ever forget the brilliant move of our grand leader when he ordered Air Force One, accompanied by fighter jets, for the famed joy ride, flying so low over downtown Manhattan it caused widespread terror and rekindled very bad memories for its citizens. Now that for sure should have made the headlines, don't you think? It didn't.

So why is he allowed to get away with all of this?

Just ask Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Who could ever forget when Bill Clinton decided to hold Barack Hussein Obama accountable for what were clearly inaccurate statements and flat-out lies. Here is a little excerpt from the town-hall meeting:

BILL CLINTON: "You [Barack Obama] said in 2004 you didn't know how you would have voted on the resolution, you said in 2004 there was no difference between you and George Bush on the war, and you took that speech you're now running on off your website in 2004, and there's no difference in your voting record and Hillary's ever since. Give me a break. This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen."

He went on to refer to Barack Obama as a kid.

That was the same town hall Mr. Clinton pointed out the slurs Barack Obama directed at Hillary about being the "senator from Punjab." Mr. Clinton was viscerally angry for the lies and distortions and made it clear. He dared to challenge the lack of honesty coming from the upstart from Chicago.

What did that get Mr. Clinton?


The charge of being a racist. How ironic considering many dubbed Clinton our first "black" president. Mr. Clinton was painted with this brush by many Obama worshippers in the press and Team Obama. How dare Clinton attempt to hold the junior senator from Illinois accountable. How dare Clinton raise a standard of honesty against the anointed one. The media had already chosen the next president. Who in the world did Bill Clinton think he was to question the one who walked on water? The chosen bearer of "hope and change"?

Mr. Obama will not be held accountable now or in the future for the same reason everyone in America backed off after that town-hall meeting – including challenger John McCain who would not question Obama for fear of being deemed a racist as well, the most feared smear in America.

As we get closer to the next election, expect to see this Obama tactic reappear.

Just imagine for a moment what George W. Bush would have been put through if he had made the same mistakes or unconstitutional moves. George Bush stopped playing golf when the troops were on the ground. Mr. Obama began. But I won't belabor the point. The double standard exists, and its seems we are all powerless to challenge it.

I only hope this election America becomes color blind to racism. The recent visit with Al Sharpton on the same week Obama launched his 2012 re-election bid was not a coincidence. These events were planned by design – a design that has made this president the "Kevlar President."

Our only hope is America will judge Mr. Obama in November of 2012 by the content of his character and not the color of his skin.
