National Calls to Prayer


Throughout the centuries, America has had a rich history of participating in times of prayer. Oftentimes, prayer proclamations were issued by the governor of a colony or state, or by the president of the United States. In fact, by 1815, some 1,400 official calls to prayer had been issued by governmental leaders. These included calls for both Days of Prayer and Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving. On these days, citizens and congregations would gather together at churches at various locations, pastors would preach a sermon addressing the topics outlined in the proclamation, and then they would all pray. Prayer at the New Bern Mall

Last Saturday, our Chairman, Rick Hopkins, helped to inspire a 'flash mob' for prayer at the New Bern Mall.  Here is a posting by Rick:

This morning our pastor and several other pastors and christians from around the area gathered at the New Bern mall to pray for the upcoming City Wide Crusade coming March 14th-16th.

Please join us as christians and churches unite to seek a revival and a return to God and His commandments in this great land.

Here is a copy of the prayer we prayed.

Almighty God creator of the heavens and the universe and all things within, you have promised that where two or more are gathered together in Thy name You will be in the midst of them and Bless them. Today Father we gather in Your name beseeching Your blessings upon the upcoming citywide crusade to be held here next month. We ask Lord that you would bind Satan from all attempts to impede and prevent the success of this crusade to win the lost to you. We further ask Father that you would loose your Holy Spirit upon this community and draw your people into service in preparation for this event.

Father God we ask that you would bring a deep conviction of sin, spiritual brokenness, a holy fear of God and genuine repentance among His people.

Father we Pray for deep cleansing, genuine repentance, and spiritual power to engulf pastors and Christian leaders.

We ask you Father to bestow spiritual hunger in His people and draw them to ferventintercession.

We ask Lord that you will bring loving unity in our churches and a deep harmony between our churches.

We ask you Father to fill Your people with a passion to see people saved.

We pray God for You to give Your people a passion for missions and starting churches.

We pray that You Father God will call thousands into ministry, missions and Christian service.

We pray that You will pour out Your Holy Spirit like a mighty purifying flood.

We pray for a mighty move of conviction and salvation upon communities of cultural influence.

God pour out Your Spirit like never before that souls will be saved and drawn to thy service and that our land might be saved and returned to Thy graces to once more be that shining example to the world.

In the Holy and Precious name of Jesus we pray.

And, worst of all, even when our courts and our legislatures banished your name and Holy Book from our institutions, or schools and even our everyday lives, I did not rise up in protest—I helped re-elect them; because, as bad as they were, they just had to better than the other party’s political whores.

All of these failures I acknowledge with a humble heart. And though you have punished us for our lack of diligence, the majority of our elected leaders remain unwilling to address the beast that is devouring our constitution, our laws, our national honor and our most sacred beliefs.

Our Republic now stands at a crossroad; on the brink of a spiritual, ideological, fiscal and economic disaster. I offer no excuse for how we got here. But I fear the magnitude of damage we have done to our constitution, you so carefully guided our Founding Fathers to create, cannot be corrected, by the current crop of candidates—and certainly not in time to escape the multiplicity of imminent disaster that confront our nation today.

I therefore urgently pray that, through divine intervention, you send us a leader in the mold of our Founding Fathers—a man or woman with the charisma, knowledge, wisdom and ability to restore the original intent of our constitution and one who also recognizes the vital importance of your Holy Presence in the affairs of our nation as in our lives.

In Jesus’ name I ask this,

After reading this past Sunday’s paper and the letters to the editor, one struck my eye, and actually my heart. It was a rebuttal letter referring to Mrs. Dorothy Vogel’s letter about prayer, specifically the right to do so in the name of Jesus Christ. While reading the rebuttal there seemed to be anger in the writing that came forth through the words and I would like to help explain some issues that I hope will remove any anger.


First, I do believe that praying in the name of Jesus is a freedom. Until the past few years it was never questioned. It was just something that most of us (here in the Bible belt especially) are used to doing because Jesus says in the Bible, "And whatever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son," so this is why Christians pray in the name of Jesus. It’s not meant to offend anyone (although for some reason it does); it’s never been a mandate for all to participate, in fact to the contrary. Just as God gives each one of us a choice in whether or not to believe in Him, His Son and the Holy Spirit, He never would force us to love Him let alone force us to pray to Him. By giving us this choice, He shows His love for us. If you don’t believe, that is absolutely up to you, but according to the Christian belief, a lack of thereof will not land you in a positive place after death. Again let me stress, this is not mandated; all are choices. That is true freedom. Christians are supposed to be Christ-like, therefore they also give others their freedom in whether or not to participate in prayer or sharing in the faith.


Let me explain it this way: I have children. I love them both with every part of my being and I want them to love me in the same manner, but I can’t make them love me. Even if I could it wouldn’t be the same; they would be more like robots. I want them to love me because THEY WANT TO. To a Christian, what is love? "Love is patient, love is kind, love does not envy, love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek it’s own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the Truth, ... Love never fails … now abide in faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love." This is how I want to be loved, this is how God wants to be loved, this is how, if we truly love, are supposed to be, loving others as ourselves, again all by choice, one that we are supposed to be free to make.


Why would anyone think that because a prayer is offered in Jesus’ name, that all in attendance are being forced/mandated to pray? All prayer is, is showing love, love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and love for the people. Why does that offended people? What a sad place this world is in when love becomes offensive.


Now, America was formed on the basis of freedom. Separation of church and state was placed to keep the government from mandating religion on its people. Offering a prayer before meetings, school gatherings or any other function is again, not a mandate of participation and I am unaware of any such event with the disclaimer that "all must pray." If there are those who wish not to, they can just remain silent for a few moments. It is however a freedom that those who are leading whatever said event can chose to do as individual people of this great free nation. If the leaders of such events were Muslim, Buddhists, Jewish or any other religion, I would expect their prayers to be offered, but it certainly doesn’t mean I would be forced to pray with them either. If the ones leading are refused the right to pray in whatever name they chose as members of this nation, isn’t that in itself a violation of their freedom?


Did the people themselves not vote these representatives of the people into office? If the people didn’t want "Christians" in office then one would assume they wouldn’t vote for one. However in this country, the majority of voters choose who will represent them and we happen to have (I’m proud to say) seven Christian men who represent Craven County as commissioners. They all pray, they all have the right to pray, as they believe in or out of office. If the majority of the voters of this county wanted otherwise, they would have voted for others who were non-believers. But the amazing fact is, most folks who have run for these offices are also Christian. If and when our country reaches a point of a majority of atheists or any given religion other then Christianity, I suppose we will have to follow the will of the people then, but we are not there now.


I watched an interview with one of the Rowan County commissioners. The Rowan commissioners are continuing to pray with no changes even in light of the recent courts decision. The reporter asked a question as to this particular commissioner’s position with upholding the Constitution (referring to the separation of church and state). His response was beautiful … he stated that his hand was on the BIBLE as he took the oath, what about his personal rights of freedom of religion and speech?


I am not angry, but again am hurt that so many who claim the title of Christian would rather keep silent then to exercise their freedom of religion and speech. Jesus said, "You will be persecuted for my name’s sake." If we don’t speak His name no one will have to worry about persecution. There are hundreds of examples throughout the Scriptures where silence was not an option. If the disciples had been silent, Christianity would have been over 2,000 years ago. If the Jewish descendants had been silent, their faith and populations would have become extinct.


I had a friend tell me to turn the other cheek, but this is not my cheek to turn. I will gladly let anyone criticize me, dislike me, reprimand me, and give them additional opportunities to do so and still love them while praying for them. But I cannot be silent while the main faith that this nation was founded upon is continually denied the freedom of being represented.


I will love ALL willingly, I will keep my faith and I will pray in Jesus’ name always especially for those who persecute the faith in whatever form.

N.C. County Stands up to ACLU’s Attack on Public Prayer

North Carolina county has thumbed its nose at the state’s ACLU franchise, which has been warning county officials all over the state to stop opening government meetings with prayer.

As reported by the Associated Press, a “Rowan County commissioner opened the board’s [March 5] meeting with a Christian prayer, despite a warning from the state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union that it would violate the law and potentially trigger a lawsuit. As has long been the elected board’s practice, Commissioner Jon Barber (left) opened the public meeting with an invocation asking for a blessing in the name of Jesus.”

The ACLU has been harassing counties all over the Tar Heel State since mid-January, when the U.S Supreme Court declined to review a ruling by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals against the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners in its long-held tradition of opening meetings with predominantly Christian prayers. As reported by The New American, two residents sued the county after a local pastor opened a December 2007 government meeting by thanking God for sending His Son “to forgive us for our sins,” and closed the prayer “in the name of Jesus.”

REPORT: Craven County Commissioners Meeting, February 6, 2012

Dear CCTA Members and Friends,


The last meeting of the Craven County Board of Commissioners was held on 6 Feb 12 at the River Bend Town Hall. I believe it was attended by the most people I have ever seen at a CC BOC meeting except the one at Havelock where the football team was introduced. Team members and family and fans made a big crowd. Anyway, I am proud to say that many CCTA members were at the River Bend meeting to protect the principles we believe in.

The meeting got off to a strange start in that the traditional invocation was missing. It was a while before we found out why. The reason is that the ACLU had just won a big victory over Forsyth County and the taxpayers of that county ended up picking up the tab for the ACLU's legal fees of $200,000. The County Attorney, Jimmy Hicks, said he had already been informed by the ACLU of possible lawsuits against two other counties he represents (not Craven). Our Board of Commissioners do not want to risk being involved in such a lawsuit, thus the lack of an invocation.

I feel angry at the ACLU and disappointed in our Board of Commissioners that they have sworn to uphold and defend the Constitution and yet allow a bunch of lawyers to facilitate this infringement on our 1st amendment rights by prohibiting the free exercise of our religion. I realize that among those lawyers are Supreme Court judges. I believe that the Congress should impeach any federal official who flouts the Constitution. Apparently, Forsyth County Commissioners have decided to continue to have prayers that are to God only (not to Jesus). I don't like that either, but, in my mind, it is a better solution than completely eliminating the invocation. At the very least there could be a moment of silent prayer.

A Mr. Michael McMillan gave a good account of activities of the Religious Community Services organization that he heads. They do a great deal of very worth while work, there is no disputing that. At the end of his presentation, Commissioner Dacey reminded him that he and his organization had been forewarned that the county may not be able to continue it's financial support in light of the belt tightening needed for fiscal prudence in these tough time. Commissioner Dacey asked what measures they were taking to obtain private financing to replace the taxpayer funding. The answer he got was that they raise money privately and had done some belt tightening themselves, but had not given up on taxpayer support. I believe I speak for most CCTA members when I say that the government should get out of charity work. It is not right to take what one citizen has earned and give it to another. When will we ever have enough elected representatives with the courage to live by that to affect a change?


The Commissioners also adopted a Child Abuse Prevention Month Proclamation. It was obviously written by a strong advocate of spending as much taxpayer money as possible on this program. You would think from reading it that child abuse can not possibly be prevented except by a large financial commitment from the community as a whole. For instance "child maltreatment occurs when parents find themselves in stressful situations without community resources and unable to cope." I dare say that kids get slapped around without the offender even thinking about seeking community resources. And the proclamation itself asks several community groups and organization to increase their participation in our (the Board of Commissioner's) efforts to prevent child maltreatment. I think the word "our" should have been struck and hoped a commissioner would suggest that, but none did.

The Tax Administrator, Mr. Ronnie Antry asked the Board to credit back almost $12,000 of taxpayer money. One item was $3,259 to one taxpayer for personal property taxes on a boat. Mr. Antry said they had assessed the boat too high. Commissioner Dacey asked if they thought it was the Queen Mary. The tax man sure wants to hit us hard. He seems determined that if he errs it will be on the side of too high.

A public hearing has been set for the James City Community Development Block Grant program again. This time at the next meeting which is at 8:30 AM on Monday, 20 February 12. I thought most public hearings were set for the evening meetings when more people can attend. Anyway, some good changes have been made in this program. Taxpayers will no longer pick up the tab and just hand someone the keys to a new house. Instead, taxpayer money will buy lots in the James City area, and a group of citizens such as Habitat for Humanity will build a house on it. The anticipated owner will have to either help build the house or have volunteers who do. Then there will be an affordable mortgage on the house. Most taxpayer money will be expended on the infrastructure such as drainage, public water and sewer, streets, lighting, etc. All appropriate functions of government. Personally, I wish the federal government would just get out of that business and leave local communities alone, but this is a step toward eliminating the total rip off of the taxpayer by this program.

The Department of Social Services found another $252,708 of State taxpayer money lying around, and the Board voted to spend it in Craven County as it has been offered up to us. Aren't we lucky? And, oh yeah, Health Family Planning got another $25,000 to spend on Contraception to include birth control pills, depo-provera (a birth control shot). I wonder how many kids get this stuff so they can have sex without fear of pregnancy. I'm glad I was born 50 years before kids had the freedom to screw their lives up like this. Aren't we taxpayer lucky to be able to pay for this?


Last, but not least, was the appropriate calling of the Sheriff on the carpet (in absence) for the terrible safety record of his department, poor accident investigation, and his refusal to do anything about it. It seems Commissioner Taylor is leading the charge on this with some help from Commissioner Dacey and others. There seems to have been seven wrecks involving deputies lately causing one death and the destruction of at least two vehicles belonging to the taxpayer and the Sheriff says "well, they drive a lot of miles and stuff happens." Well, that is not good enough. I was there when the Sheriff did appear before the Board and gave a toe tap around instead of really presenting a driver training program. Now he is just defying the Board. I hope he sees the light when the Board reviews his budget in the coming months. It also came to light that the Sheriff's department is short about $10,000 of funds in an account set up so that prisoners could make purchases at the prison canteen. Prisoners put money into the account and spend it somehow at the canteen. The account is now empty and, as I said, should have about $10,000 in it. Someone obviously absconded with the funds. It is being investigated.

I'm sure I missed a few transgressions, but I guess that will do for now.

CARLTON'S CORNER: Another Blow to Freedom of Religion

This is the final Supreme Court verdict WRT ACLU vs Forsyth County, N.C w/regards to prayer in the name of Jesus in municipality and county funded meeting places-in this case the County Board of Comissioners' Meeting.


I can tell you that this country is in great jeprody. We are quite simply guilty of Apostasy and we, as a Nation, will be punished. The Bible is very clear on the matter.

The fact is, now the door is opened for the gov't to edict exactly how a Christian is to pray anywhere and it may be expected that all municipality and state sponsored meetings will be affected. Some will continue to pray, but not in Jesus' name while others will discontinue prayer altogether rather than abide by nonsectarian criteria which is now essentially the--law of the land!


Look for increasing and insidious actions against Christian gatherings. This is only the start and the ramifications are endless.


We are no longer a country where the majority rules but rather where the minority rules and Christians are the most hated minority of all.

U.S. Supreme Court rejects Forsyth County prayer appeal

The U.S. Supreme Court this morning rejected Forsyth County's appeal of lower court rulings against the county's policy of allowing sectarian prayers at the opening of meetings of the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners.

The court announced this morning that it had denied a hearing to the county, following a Friday conference in which the Forsyth County case came up for discussion.

I'm not surprised," said Forsyth County Commissioner Dave Plyler, who had supported the appeals while voicing skepticism about the county's chances. Plyler thinks the battle over prayer will continue elsewhere.

The Supreme Court let stand a 2-1 ruling by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that found that Forsyth County had endorsed Christianity with its prayer policy, although the policy was neutral on its face. The appeals court said that under the policy a large majority of the prayers referenced Christianity.


In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision, cities and counties all over the state will be getting letters from the American Civil Liberties Union warning them to stop allowing sectarian prayers.

"We are about to get very busy," said Katherine Parker, the ACLU attorney who argued the case against Forsyth County in the court system. "We have heard from 25 to 30 religious minority individuals in cities and counties all over North Carolina, and we are about to start contacting those (local government) attorneys. We are going to remind them that this is the law, and presume that they will follow the law."

Parker said the Supreme Court's decision not to hear Forsyth County's appeal "underscores that government can't take sides on religion, and that is what Forsyth County has been doing by endorsing one set of beliefs over another."

"Anybody who believes that the government ought to be neutral on matters of religion ought to be happy today," Parker said.

The ACLU will also be sending Forsyth County a bill for about $200,000 in legal fees, Parker said. A local group of prayer supporters had pledged $300,000 for the county's legal defense. Plyler said he's happy that the ending of the suit will not be costing the county money.

The county's defense was handled by the Alliance Defense Fund, a conservative Christian organization that had offered legal services to the county for free, although the ADF said from the start that it would not pay any legal fees awarded to the plaintiffs in the county lost.


"I'm surprised and disappointed," said Mike Johnson, the ADF attorney who argued Forsyth County's case before the courts. "We really were expecting that the court would want to take a look at the case. I think that this leaves a very important constitutional law issue essentially unresolved. We believe that sometime soon, the Supreme Court will have to hear one of these cases to resolve the issue."

Johnson had argued that the 4th-Circuit ruling against Forsyth had created a conflict with an 11th-circuit ruling in Georgia that had found no problem with sectarian references. Even within the 4th Circuit, Johnson said, the court ruling has left officials asking "if there is a threshold number of sectarian references" that run afoul of the constitution.

The ADF stands by its belief that sectarian prayers are constitutional before government bodies, Johnson said, and will continue to offer legal services in similar cases.

Citizens who objected to prayers mentioning Jesus filed a federal lawsuit against Forsyth County in March 2007.

ACLU to Ask More Gov't Boards to Change Prayer Policy

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP)—

The ACLU said it will ask 25-30 other government boards to change their policies on prayer at meetings as a result of Tuesday's Supreme Court decision not to take up Forsyth County's appeal.

Katy Parker, legal director with the ACLU of North Carolina, said they will be sending letters to towns, counties and other boards across the state. She would would not specify which ones in an interview Tuesday.

Winston-Salem Mayor Alan Joines said City Council is expected to go into closed session Tuesday night to discuss its position on prayer at meetings. The ACLU contacted the city at the same time the Forsyth County Commission was, but the city wasn't sued.

In 2007, the ACLU sued the commission on behalf of two women who said prayers before meetings made it seem their government favored one religion over another. Three lower courts ruled in favor of the women.


The county appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which decided Tuesday not to take up the case.

"We are surprised by Supreme Court's ruling," said Rev. Steve Corts with Centergrove Baptist Church. Corts helped raise $300,000 so county commissioners could fight the lawsuit without using taxpayer money.

"The majority of us in Forsyth County are Christians. It burdens and saddens me that a person of faith is muzzled and censored by the government," Corts said.

"You can't have a situation where the majority gets to bully the minority by saying, 'There are more of us, and therefore your rights don't count,'" Parker said.

While the ruling doesn't completely prohibit prayer, several commissioners said they aren't sure if prayer will be brought back, since the prayers can't mention a specific deity.

Obama Team Says Prayer 'Dilutes' WWII Memorial Message

There's common sense. There's the faith in God that helped build this country and hold it together through trying times such as World War II. Then, there's the Obama administration, which appears to lack both of the above. During a congressional hearing on whether to include President Roosevelt's famous prayer as part of the WWII Memorial, an Obama administration official objected, saying the prayer would "dilute" the memorial's central message. What is happening to this country?

WALL BUILDERS: An Historic Event

This past Saturday, over 32,000 from across the nation gathered at Reliant Stadium in Houston at the request of Texas Governor Rick Perry for a day of fasting, repentance, and prayer for America. Protestors ringed the outside of the event, which is a potent commentary on the condition of the culture today that so many object to Americans voluntary gathering for prayer.

Media coverage prior to the event was largely negative, with many articles happily providing critics a free platform from which to spew their hate. Particularly preposterous were the historical arguments leveled against the event.

It is about time we Christians stand up and demand our rights too, instead of letting our government, the media and non believers tell us that we don't have a right to pray to God publicly. Please pass on to your friends if you agree.


CBS and Katie Couric et al must be in a panic and rushing to reassure the White House that this is not network policy--re: Andy Rooney's commentary on prayer.


Folks, this is the year that we RE-TAKE AMERICA & CANADA

Andy Rooney says:  I don't believe in Santa Claus, but I'm not going to sue somebody for singing a Ho-Ho-Ho song in December. I don't agree with Darwin , but I didn't go out and hire a lawyer when my high school teacher taught his Theory of Evolution.

Life, liberty or your pursuit of happiness will not be endangered because someone says a 30-second prayer before a football game. So what's the big deal? It's not like somebody is up there reading the entire Book of Acts. They're just talking to a God they believe in and asking him to grant safety to the players on the field and the fans going home from the game.


But it's a Christian prayer, some will argue.

Yes, and this is the United States of America and Canada , countries founded on Christian principles. According to our very own phone book, Christian churches outnumber all others better than 200-to-1. So what would you expect -- somebody chanting Hare Krishna?

If I went to a football game in Jerusalem , I would expect to hear a Jewish prayer.
If I went to a soccer game in Baghdad , I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer.
If I went to a ping pong match in China , I would expect to hear someone pray to Buddha.
And I wouldn't be offended. It wouldn't bother me one bit.

When in Rome ......

But what about the atheists? Is another argument.

What about them? Nobody is asking them to be baptized. We're not going to pass the collection plate. Just humour us for 30 seconds. If that's asking too much, bring a Walkman or a pair of ear plugs. Go to the bathroom. Visit the concession stand. Call your lawyer!

Unfortunately, one or two will make that call. One or two will tell thousands what they can and cannot do I don't think a short prayer at a football game is going to shake the world's foundations.

Christians are just sick and tired of turning the other cheek while our courts strip us of all our rights. Our parents and grandparents taught us to pray before eating, to pray before we go to sleep. Our Bible tells us to pray without ceasing. Now a handful of people and their lawyers are telling us to cease praying.

God, help us. And if that last sentence offends you, well, just sue me.

The silent majority has been silent too long. It's time we tell that one or two who scream loud enough to be heard that the vast majority doesn't care what they want. It is time that the majority rules! It's time we tell them, "You don't have to pray; you don't have to say the Pledge of Allegiance; you don't have to believe in God or attend services that honour Him. That is your right, and we will honour your right; but by golly, you are no longer going to take our rights away. We are fighting back, and we WILL WIN!"

God bless us one and all...Especially those who denounce Him, God bless America and Canada , despite all our faults, We are still the greatest nation of all. God bless our service men who are fighting to protect our right to pray and worship God.

Let's make 2011 the year the silent majority is heard and we put God back as the foundation of our families and institutions. And our military forces come home from all the wars.

Life Chain + 40 Days For Life

In October, two special events will take place to bring attention to the scourge of abortion on America—the Life Chain and 40 Days for Life. Both are peaceful and prayerful public witnesses of pro-life individuals praying and working for an end to abortion.

The 23rd annual Life Chain will be held on October 3. For 90 minutes, pro-life Americans and Canadians will stand 25 to 30 feet apart along sidewalks across the continent in “a visual statement of solidarity by the Christian community that abortion kills children and that the Church supports the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception until natural death.” Participants are encouraged to spend the time in prayer for the nation and those affected by abortion. Many will hold signs with reminders like “Abortion Kills Children,” “Adoption – the Loving Option,” “Jesus Forgives and Heals,” “Lord, Forgive Us and Our Nation,” “Abortion Hurts Women,” “Life – the First Inalienable Right,” and “Pray to End Abortion.” Life Chains have been organized in more than 40 cities across North Carolina. National Life Chain organizers emphasize “the LIFE CHAIN is church oriented and pastor focused and that the key to a successful Chain is for local pastors to educate their congregations about abortion and then lead them to the sidewalk where their Chain is to held. Without firm pastor support, a Life Chain will not fulfill its potential for saving lives and changing hearts.”

Starting on September 22 and running through October 31, Christians in 238 locations across the world will witness through prayer outside abortion clinics to serve women who find themselves seeking an abortion. The 40 Days for Life campaign is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion in America.

The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America.

Friday Five: Rep. Randy Forbes on the National Day of Prayer Decision

A federal judge ruled this week that the National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional.

As founder and co-chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, Rep. Randy Forbes, R-Va., said the decision deprives us of “the very principles we need to secure our freedom.”

1. A federal court in Wisconsin has ruled the National Day of Prayer unconstitutional. Tell us your thoughts on that decision.

Throughout our nation’s history, prayer and religion have been deeply woven into the foundation of our great democracy. In fact, John Adams correctly noted that while statesmen could plan and speculate about liberty, it was only religion and morality that could establish the principles to secure freedom. The federal judge’s decision to call the National Day of Prayer unconstitutional represents a movement we are seeing across the country of a small minority who want to exclude faith, religion and morality from the marketplace of ideas. In so doing, they may be depriving us of the very principles we need to secure our freedom. Not only does this decision undermine the basic premise of our Declaration of Independence, but it takes an opposite viewpoint of so many great leaders throughout our nation's history. It also seeks to weaken the very foundation upon which our nation was built.

2. The ruling may go all the way to the US Supreme Court. Given the current makeup of the court, do you anticipate a favorable ruling at that level?

While we cannot speculate how the Supreme Court would rule on this case, one thing this particular decision should make clear is how dangerous it is to appoint activist judges. This federal judge has essentially said that the Declaration of Independence – a document that very clearly states that our rights were given by a Creator – is unconstitutional. Is there any question this judge would have declared the Declaration of Independence unconstitutional if it were written today, since it proclaims all our rights come from the Creator? It is regrettable that we would have a federal judge essentially rule against the very premise of the nation's foundational document of freedom. The decision should be a wake-up call to Americans across the country.

3. In his first year in office President Obama signed the proclamation on the day of the event with no ceremony. What message does that send to the nation about religious liberty?

This White House has been slow to take steps to acknowledge this important part of our nation’s history. Unfortunately, this places us on a slippery slope where at the bottom, there is no prayer, there is no acknowledgment of our Creator, and there is no recognition of our nation’s spiritual heritage and its connection to American strength. It is important that we continue to affirm America’s spiritual heritage and reaffirm the ability of all Americans to pray for blessings on their lives and on our nation according to the dictates of their conscience.

4. The National Day of Prayer has been recognized dating back to the 1700s with the Continental Congress. Is there still a place for such a celebration today, or is the court correct that its day has passed?

There is absolutely still a place for the celebration of prayer in America. There is a small segment of people in the country today who want to exclude this major portion of our history of faith, religion and morality that has made America great. But there are millions of Americans who are going to continue to take a strong stand on the issue of preserving America’s religious heritage.

Over the past couple of years, we have seen efforts to cover up references to God on the Washington Monument, remove the mention of God from veterans’ flag-folding ceremonies, take God off our Capitol flag certificates, and erase “In God We Trust” from the Capitol Visitor Center. In every one of these cases, the bipartisan Congressional Prayer Caucus, which I founded and co-chair, has worked to preserve this important part of our history – and it has been successful. I am confident that we can be successful on this issue of protecting the National Day of Prayer in America as well.

5. The Freedom From Religion Foundation and organizations like it have been filing lawsuits like these for years. What should people of faith do to protect their religious liberty?

We have had a lot of victories over the past few years on matters of preserving faith, religion and morality in America. These successes serve as proof that because we believe, we stand, and because we stand, we can make a difference. But we still have work to do. We owe it to those who have gone before us and to our future generations to provide a complete representation of our nation’s heritage. In the past, many people of faith have been content to settle for a defensive strategy, waiting for these anti-God groups to pick their forums and their judges so that they could concentrate their resources to slowly unravel the tapestry of faith that has sustained America. I believe we need a different strategy. I believe we need to get everybody in the fight and reclaim a seat for faith in the marketplace of ideas. That is why we are attempting to establish prayer caucuses in every state legislature in America. Mississippi took that step this week, Virginia will soon follow and other states are on the way.
