The debt ceiling: We were tricked, y’all!

The Daily Haymaker, by Brant Clifton,
American Hustle is not just lighting up the movie screens.  It’s playing out on Capitol Hill as well.
Following last week’s disgraceful surrender by House Republicans on the debt ceiling, we got all kinds of stories about how Howard Coble was the only NCGOPer to vote for Boehner’s bill.  Actually, it appears that most Republicans voted to allow others to raise the debt limit, and then turned around and voted against the debt ceiling increase.  Like John Kerry, they were FOR it, before they were AGAINST it.

How did this all go down? Pull up a chair.  Class is in session.

House OKs Hatteras beach-driving bill

The Virginian-Pilot, By Jeff Hampton, February 8, 2014

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday that would allow more beach driving access to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., will go to the Senate. The Senate took no action on a similar bill in 2012 after it had passed the Republican-controlled House.
North Carolina Sens. Richard Burr, a Republican, and Kay Hagan, a Democrat, back the measure.

Defending Conservative Principles--Walter B. Jones

January 9, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) is pleased to announce that for 2013 he was ranked the most conservative member of the North Carolina congressional delegation by leading grassroots conservative organization FreedomWorks.

“Defending America’s principles of freedom is my greatest privilege and responsibility as a member of the House of Representatives,” said Congressman Jones.  “Moving into 2014, I will continue to oppose unconstitutional government overreach and infringement on our liberties.”

Congressman Jones earned a near-perfect score on 21 key votes in 2013 that FreedomWorks identified as displaying a commitment to “fighting for lower taxes, less government and more freedom.”

FreedomWorks recognized Congressman Jones for his votes to stop raising the debt limit, to cut wasteful government spending, to repeal and defund Obamacare, and to prevent the federal government from spying on U.S. citizens without a warrant, among other things.  You can view the entire 2013 scorecard for North Carolina members of the U.S. House of Representatives here.

GOP Congressional candidate in NC 3rd switches to run as Democrat after government shutdown

RALEIGH, North Carolina — An Iraq War veteran campaigning for Congress in eastern North Carolina against U.S. Rep. Walter Jones has changed his party registration from Republican to Democrat, saying the tea party has made the GOP too extreme.

In a statement on his website Thursday, former U.S. Army Sgt. Jason R. Thigpen said the recent federal government shutdown triggered his switch.

"I simply cannot stand with a party where its most extreme element promote hate and division amongst people," said Thigpen, 36. "Nothing about my platform has, nor will it change. The government shutdown was simply the straw that broke the camel's back. I guess being an American just isn't good enough anymore and I refuse to be part of an extremist movement in the GOP that only appears to thrive on fear and hate mongering of anyone and everyone who doesn't walk their line."

Such a switch is not unprecedented. Third District incumbent Jones pulled off the reverse move in 1994, becoming a Republican after losing a Democratic primary two years earlier.

Beaufort Observer Online: The GOP is in trouble Down East

June 24, 2012

It is entirely possible that N. C. House Speaker Thom Tillis is the most unpopular politician in Eastern North Carolina right now. And it seems to be getting worse with each passing day.

For example, in Sunday's (6-24-12) Beaufort County Now, publisher Stan Deatherage took Tillis to task over Tillis getting Congressman Walter B. Jones to endorse "Democrat-running-as-a-Republican" Arthur Williams for the House 6 seat. Stan had previously reported on a flap at the recent GOP State Convention over a flyer that was being handed out that questioned the meddling by state GOP officials/office holders in local GOP primaries. Tillis came out of that flap looking bad when it was reported that he bullied a highly regarded GOP activist on the convention floor. That buzz is not only still around, but appears to be growing as a negative groundswell toward Tillis and other state GOP leaders.

Tillis already had two strikes against him among many GOP leaders in Eastern North Carolina as a result of his pushing a budget through with increased ferry tolls and how his redistricting committee dealt with Bill Cook and other districts Down East in the redistricting process.

A number of delegates to the Third District Convention in May were primed to pin Tillis down as he was scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the Convention. He did not show and did not let anyone know well enough in advance to find a suitable replacement. Similarly, Walter B. Jones did not even attend the Third District Convention, allowing his challenger Frank Palombo to steal the show. At that meeting the Chairman of the Beaufort County GOP Executive Committee gave a report from that group that had adopted a formal protest of Raleigh leaders meddling in local GOP primaries. The report got a resounding applause and reception with numerous other delegations requesting copies. But because the report was too late to be submitted as a formal resolution there was no vote on it taken.

Today in Washington DC!

JUMPSTART OUR BUSINESS STARTUPS ACT: Vote Passed (390-23, 19 Not Voting). This House bill would ease reporting and regulatory requirements for small businesses trying to raise capital in order to take the company public. The White House supports the bill, but its path in the Senate is unclear. Rep. Walter Jones voted YES.

BUREAU OF RECLAMATION SMALL CONDUIT HYDROPOWER DEVELOPMENT AN RURAL JOBS ACT OF 2011. Vote Passed (265-154, 13 Not Voting). The House passed this bill that would encourage the development of small-scale hydropower facilities on federal lands. The bill's future in the Senate is unclear. Rep. Walter Jones voted YES.

KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE: During the debate over the transportation bill, the Senate rejected this amendment that would have allowed construction of the Keystone XL pipeline to proceed without presidential approval. Sixty votes were needed to adopt the amendment. FYI, Sen. Richard Burr and Sen. Kay Hagan both voted YES.

THE SENATE: Convened at 10, and this evening by a solid bipartisan majority will vote to pass a two-year, $109 billion revamp of highway and transit programs. The bill, which the House may clear as soon as next week, would give states more flexibility in spending federal transportation money and streamline environmental reviews so projects get started quicker.

Senators will vote at noon on two amendments — one giving states even more flexibility, the other tinkering with the formula for apportioning aid to the states; after their weekly caucus lunches they will vote on as many as 20 more — including proposals to allow states to put toll booths on interstates, create tax credits for cars fueled with natural gas and permit more flights over the Grand Canyon.

THE WHITE HOUSE:  Obama just announced that his administration, the EU and Japan have banded together to press an unfair trade practices case against China. They want the WTO to get the country to end export restrictions on tungsten, molybdenum and “rare earth” elements. The minerals are used to make hybrid car batteries, flat-screen TVs, wind turbines, mercury vapor lights, smartphones and camera lenses.

The president is spending the bulk of the rest of the day combining re-election politics, global diplomacy and his intense interest in March Madness. He and British Prime Minister David Cameron will leave the Ellipse at 4:20 en route to Ohio (18 jump-ball electoral votes) — plenty of time to make the 6:30 tipoff at the University of Dayton between Western Kentucky and Mississippi Valley State in the first round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Air Force One will get the two back to Washington by 10:35. (Michelle Obama is doing her part for the “special relationship” by taking Samantha Cameron to a summer-Olympics-in-London-themed “Let’s Move” event for school kids at American University.)
