Walter Jones’s War--How the Tarheel legislator became his party’s conscience

In a Capitol filled with bloviating self-promoters, Walter Jones is a soft-spoken Southern gentleman. But even though he has all the quiet charm of a sleepy country town, the ten-term North Carolina Republican is quite capable of righteous indignation.

“Congress will not hold anyone to blame,” Jones, now 70, said of America’s Middle Eastern wars while speaking to Young American for Liberty in Raleigh last February. “Lyndon Johnson’s probably rotting in hell right now because of the Vietnam War, and he probably needs to move over for Dick Cheney.”

Since he was first elected as part of the “Republican Revolution” in 1994, Jones—whose father Walter Sr. was a congressman before him—has been one of the most conservative members of Congress. He is staunchly pro-life. He worries about the military circumscribing chaplains’ right to pray in Jesus’ name.

Not mincing any words, Jones calls Obamacare a “disaster,” which he has repeatedly voted to defund and repeal. He even opposed big government when it was offered up by Republican presidents, voting against the Medicare prescription-drug benefit and No Child Left Behind. He has scored a perfect 100 percent rating from the American Conservative Union four times, missing it twice more by just one vote.

But Jones might be best known for his strong turn against the foreign policy of George W. Bush. Representing a military-heavy district that includes the U.S. Marine Corps’ Camp Lejeune, Jones voted for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. When France opposed the Iraq War, he led the crusade to rename french fries “freedom fries” on congressional menus in protest.

Jones to visit Havelock on Aug. 26

HAVELOCK — U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones is scheduled to make a pair of stops in Havelock on Aug. 26.

Jones, R-Farmville, is scheduled to speak during the Havelock Chamber of Commerce Federal Update Luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center.

Jones is expected to provide an update on issues in Washington and their impacts on the Havelock area, including updates on defense issues, budget cuts and Base Realignment and Closure that could impact Cherry Point air station and the Fleet Readiness Center East aircraft repair and maintenance facility.

Col. Blayne H. Spratlin, commanding officer of FRC East, is also scheduled to speak during the luncheon.

The cost for lunch is $15. Pre-registration is recommended.

Last week  I voted for H.R. 3408, legislation that would expand oil and gas drilling in the United States, approve the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada, reduce dependence on Middle Eastern oil and lower gas prices.  The bill passed by a vote of 237 to 187 and now moves to the Senate for further consideration.  Meanwhile, the Obama Administration has announced its opposition to the provisions in H.R. 3408.

Among other things, H.R. 3408 would:

• open up Alaska’s Arctic Refuge (ANWR) for oil and gas exploration;
• require the federal government to issue a permit for construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada within 30 days;
• require new oil and gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico, and off the coasts of Virginia, California and Alaska; and, 
• require up to 37.5% of revenues from federal offshore oil and gas leases to be shared with coastal states within 200 miles of the leased land.

There are many reasons we have high gas prices today including unprecedented money printing by the Federal Reserve and other central banks, delayed action by federal regulators on requirements to set meaningful position limits to curb manipulation of oil and other commodity markets, and of course, the failure of the federal government to proceed with responsible development of the resources we have here at home. I have been, and will continue to be, outspoken about the need to address all of these issues. The bottom line is that this Administration cannot continue to stand by and do nothing while Americans are getting hurt at the pump. This is about jobs. It’s about getting our economy moving again. By approving the Keystone XL pipeline, opening ANWR and several offshore areas, and allowing revenue sharing with the states, the House bill is a step in the right direction and this Administration and Senate Democrats ought to support it.

RECENT SENATE VOTES


Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act - Vote Agreed to (60-36, 4 Not Voting)--The Senate gave final approval to the agreement to extend the Social Security payroll tax rate cut, which was reduced from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent last year, through the end of 2012. The bill also extends certain unemployment benefits and Medicare physician payment rates through the end of the year. The president is expected to sign the bill into law. Sen. Richard Burr voted NO and Sen. Kay Hagan voted YES.

RECENT HOUSE VOTES
Protecting Investment in Oil Shale the Next Generation of Environmental, Energy, and Resource Security Act - Vote Passed (237-187, 10 Not Voting). The House passed the first part of the surface transportation authorization bill, which has been divided into three parts. This part deals with energy and would use oil and gas revenue to fund transportation projects.  Rep. Walter Jones voted YES.

NEWS AND OBSERVER: Rep. Jones and George Soros = best friends? Not!

You might say former New Bern police chief and current congressional candidate Frank Palombo is stretching a bit when he in a news release ties North Carolina Republican U.S. Rep. Walter Jones to “left-wing radical George Soros.”


Here’s how he does it:

Jones joined Congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul and liberal Rep. Barney Frank of Massachussetts in requesting a task force on military spending. A year and a half ago it recommended nearly $1 trillion in Pentagon cuts over 10 years.

Conservative talk-show host Glenn Beck helped out by coming up with a report that 11 of the 14 members of the task force represent groups that Beck says receive funding from liberal philanthropist Soros.

KINSTON: Former New Bern police chief seeks House seat

Republican Frank Palombo looks to unseat long-serving U.S. Rep. Walter Jones


Rep. Walter B. Jones, R-N.C., has been in office since 1994, and has withstood a host of challengers seeking to unseat him in the ensuing 18 years.

This year, fellow Republican Frank Palombo is taking his shot at the seat.

“There’s a lot of work that has to be done, and the idea of having career politicians trying to work on these problems doesn’t make sense to me,” Palombo told The Free Press in an interview Monday. “We need leadership; we don’t need career politicians.”

Palombo retired last June after 14 years as New Bern’s police chief and traveled to Kinston on Monday to speak at an Eastern North Carolina Tea Party held at Fairfield Recreation Center that evening.

He is running against Jones for the Republican nomination to represent House District 3 in Washington, D.C. The district covers a 20-county region of Eastern North Carolina, including the northeastern section of Lenoir County, eastern Greene County and all of Jones County. It stretches from Currituck County down the coast to Wilmington, and extends well inland.

The candidate filing period begins in early February, but Palombo is one of at least three Republican challengers who have declared their intent to run for the House this month — Ilario Pantano and David Rouzer recently stated their intent to run for the District 7 seat.

SUN JOURNAL NEW BERN: Jones introduces resolution to release MIA/POW records

Even post offices in some locations still fly the Missing in Action flag but the families of those gone but not forgotten do not have access to records that could help in their search.


Rep. Walter B. Jones, R-NC, introduced a resolution this week calling on the Department of Defense to declassify Missing in Action and Prisoner of War records to make their search easier.

“The families have a right to know what happened to their loved ones,” Jones said. “It is important to give families all the information they need to get the answers they deserve.”

We published an article the other day (10-21-11) that struck a nerve with a couple of our loyal readers. Both of them felt we should not have published the article, because it "made Walter look bad."

The "Walter" they are referring to is Third District Congressman Walter B. Jones. The article contained a rating from the Citizens Against Government Waste, a Washington 'watchdog' organization. It rated and ranked all 535 members of Congress on their voting records to reduce government spending by cutting out waste. Walter Jones scored 61% in that assessment.

Our friends believe Walter Jones is a staunch conservative. So they argued that the Citizens rating was an aberration, and not indicative of his real record. So we did some research and found that indeed, the Citizens' rating was accurate. We went to the seminal conservative think tank, the Heritage Foundation and checked their latest ratings of our representatives in Washington and found that, low an behold, Walter B. Jones was rated as voting "conservative" 45% of the time. You can check the original by clicking here.

To put that 45% rating in perspective, Jones ranked at the bottom of the Republicans in the delegation, voting liberal more than he voted conservative.

North Carolina General Assembly & US House of Representatives - Current Status of Key Bills

North Carolina General Assembly

1. NC Budget Override - The Senate voted along party lines to override the governor's veto in a vote of 31 to 19, on Jun 15th. The new Republican majority in the General Assembly made history, and the budget is effective on July 1, 2011. Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger said, "Final passage of this bipartisan budget signals a new, more responsible era in North Carolina state government - one in which legislators spend tax dollars wisely, fuel job creation in the private sector, and refuse to settle for average results in public classrooms." The Republican Senate Caucus stated, "Bipartisan agreement rejects Governor Perdue's $1 billion tax hike and right-sizes state government."


2. Voter Photo ID (HB351/SB352) - The Senate passed the legislation in a vote of 31 to 19 last night. The bill will return to the House because it does not have a veto-proof majority there, and Governor Perdue could veto the bill which she opposes.

3. Abortion - A Woman's Right to Know Act (HB854/S769) - Passed in the Senate in a vote of 29 to 20 on Jun 15th. The bill next goes to the governor. Republican Stan Bingham (Davidson, Guilford) voted against the measure. He said he has four daughters and, "I leave it up to them to make decisions about their own bodies." [Shouldn't information from a doctor be available before making the decision?] Democrat Sen. Ellie Kinnaird, (Orange) said she found it "ironic that Republicans stand for getting government out of people's lives, except when it comes to the bedroom." [Some people say it is ironic that Democrats want no information before ending the life of a baby, but they want everything else labeled with warnings.]

4. Government Contractors Must Use E-Verify (HB36) - The bill text has had six changes since being filed. The House passed the bill on Jun 8th in a vote of 68 to 43. However amendments were added and the Senate voted on a different version in a vote of 46 to 1 on Jun 14th and the bill was returned to the House. The Senate version has been questioned by various groups. [A review of the facts is being conducted and information will be disseminated when it is complete.]

5. A view of the House calendar for today shows eight pages of bills to discuss. The Senate Calendar contains six pages of bills to act on today. The session will end tomorrow, Jun 17th.

U.S. House of Representatives

Representatives Howard Coble (R-6th) and Walter B. Jones (R-3rd) have joined a bipartisan group of legislators in a lawsuit against President Obama's unilateral military actions in Libya, without seeking Congressional approval. Under the War Powers Act, the President of the U.S. must receive authority from the Congress before embarking on military action. President Obama contends he "doesn't need congressional approval for the limited role that the United States is playing in Libya."

Rep. Coble said that President Bush sought authority from Congress before going into Iraq. In addition he stated, ". . . I'm pretty tired of funding money by the billions and then seeing our people come back either dead or disabled for life."

The group is seeking a "judge's order suspending U.S. participation without congressional approval" in Libya.
