Butterfield's record

SUN JOURNAL NEW BERN, LETTER TO THE EDITOR:  Butterfield's record

August 12, 2010 10:00 PM

Me? I was raised believing in self-reliance, strong national security, small government, free enterprise, and individual liberty. Plainly, my mentors got it all wrong.

Case in point: the congressional votes of U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield.

On big ticket items stimulus, health care, cap and trade, financial reform, and SERVE/Americorps, he’s voted straight party line flying smack in the face of small government, free enterprise, and freedom of choice. No two ways about it. Polled Americans overwhelmingly reject these programs — 71 percent of Missourians just said “dump Obama-care!”

So much for consent of the governed.

In fairness, Mr. Butterfield voted no several times. No to funding missile defense and no to saving TARP money before it’s squandered on additional self-promoting road signs and more sporty turtle tunnels.

Mr. Butterfield co-sponsored 15 pieces of legislation total. A total of two were made into law, both named federal buildings after constituents.

Additionally, Mr. Butterfield wrote the profound “Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite Act of 2009” then voted to continue funding ACORN.

I can’t make this stuff up.
