CCTA ISSUES AND WATCHDOG COMMITTEE
February 19, 2012
Hello CCTA Members & Friends,
A number of issues will come up at the Craven County Board of Commissioners meeting tomorrow morning that are of particular interest to us as taxpayers:
1) A public hearing to allow the county to buy vacant lots in James City in order to contract with a non-profit group to build a new home for "qualified" homebuyers. This is better than the way it used to be done!
2) The Public Health Nursing Director will tell us how her department spends some of our tax dollars.
3) The Deputy Social Services Director will tell us about a plan to spend more tax dollars to renovate a county building (509 Broad Street) to house a "Family Resource Center." "The center will be a place where children can build a positive relationship with their parents and other family members by having a conflict-free place to visit." WOW!! I got a place like that right in my home growing up! I guess I was just lucky.
4) The trash hauling contract is apparently up for renewal. I thought we taxpayers just saved around $250,000 by changing the contractor for that service. Anyway it is back on the table.
5) Another $4,000 or so refunded or credited to taxpayers because of billing errors, etc. Totals over $200,000 this year.
I guess we would not have any problem with most of the rest of the agenda items. If you can find the time, please attend.
