Obama makes election-year change in deportation policy--The Obama administration announced Friday it will stop deporting illegal immigrants who come to the country at a young age The politically charged decision comes as Obama faces a tough reelection fight against Republican Mitt Romney, and Hispanic voters in swing states will play a crucial role in the contest. The change in policy could allow as many as 800,000 immigrants who came to the United States illegally not only to remain in the country without fear of being deported, but to work legally, according to a senior administration official speaking to reporters Friday.

On immigration, Obama wanted to bypass Congress--“Now, Obama has decided, in the words of an Associated Press report, to "stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives," a policy that "will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants." The action, which Republicans call amnesty and the administration calls "deferred action," will surely spark GOP calls to rein in the president's unilateral measures. The question will be whether any Democratic members of Congress, who might agree with Obama's policy goals, will dare express unhappiness with how he enacts them.”

Reporter interrupts Obama during Rose Garden announcement--The moment — which caught the president, his aides and reporters by surprise — caused Obama to bristle.… President Obama was interrupted by a reporter on Friday as he was making a statement from the Rose Garden about his new deportation policy.  In the middle of the statement, a reporter from the Daily Caller shouted out a question to Obama about whether the policy is fair to American workers. The president had just finished telling reporters that the new policy would "lift the shadow of deportation from young people." "Let's be clear, this is not amnesty," Obama said.
