National Calls to Prayer
Throughout the centuries, America has had a rich history of participating in times of prayer. Oftentimes, prayer proclamations were issued by the governor of a colony or state, or by the president of the United States. In fact, by 1815, some 1,400 official calls to prayer had been issued by governmental leaders. These included calls for both Days of Prayer and Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving. On these days, citizens and congregations would gather together at churches at various locations, pastors would preach a sermon addressing the topics outlined in the proclamation, and then they would all pray.
