During a recent radio interview, I made a statement concerning voting privileges that caused a little controversy. I put forth the proposition that only people who are paying taxes would be allowed to vote. Of course, exceptions such as previous service to the country would be taken into account.
My proposition is actually an extension of a quote from Benjamin Franklin:
“When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”
The current definition of this statement is called “redistribution”. This system penalizes people who are working and reward those who are not. This quote from Thomas Jefferson gives us another perspective that ended up being prophetic:
“Our democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”
President Jefferson’s statement concerning redistribution would never occur if only people who are producing and reaping the fruits of their labor are given the right to vote as Mr. Franklin stated. Only in a Socialist society where charity has been replaced by dependence on the state could our current popular opinion concerning voting be considered a requirement for “Democracy”.
So now we have reaped the consequences of allowing people to be bought in order to perpetuate a corrupt government. You can substitute another word for “corrupt” that may better suit your definition of a government that has bankrupted our country for absolute power. Even the famous Fabian Socialist, George Bernard Shaw recognized the power of the government using redistribution to stay in power.
“A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.”
What did our founding fathers of North Carolina have to say about this subject? The following state constitutional requirements for voting clearly show that they had a firm understanding of this simple principle. It is no wonder the federal government illegally replaced our state’s 1776 constitution with our current constitution in 1868.
7. That all freemen of the age of twenty-one years, who have been inhabitants of any one county within the State twelve months immediately preceding the day of any election, and possessed of a freehold, within the same county, of fifty acres of land, for six months next before, and at the day of election, shall be entitled to vote for a member of the senate.
8. That all freemen of the age of twenty-one years, who have been inhabitants of any one county within the State twelve months immediately preceding the day of any election, and shall have paid public taxes, shall be entitled to vote for members of the house of commons, for the county in which he resides.
9. That all persons possessed of a freehold, in any town in this State, having a right of representation, and also all freemen, who have been inhabitants of any such town twelve months next before, and at the day of election, and shall have paid public taxes, shall be entitled to vote for a member to represent such town in the house of commons: provided, always, that this section shall not entitle any inhabitant of such town to vote for members of the house of commons for the county in which he may reside: nor any freeholder in such county, who resides without or beyond the limits of such town, to vote for a member of the said town.
Do you think our debt ceiling would need to be raised above $14.3 trillion if we went back to following the founding principles of this country?
