A warning of war Posted by Judson Phillips on February 15, 2011 at 6:40am
With the attempt by Barack Obama to destablize the Egyptian government, many people now believe there is a greater than 50-50 chance of a major war in the next year.
Mubarak, whatever else you want to say about him, was a source of stability in the Middle East. He could have fought Israel again, after Anwar Sadat was assassinated, but instead he decided there would be peace with Israel.
Now, with Mubarak gone, Hezbollah (read Iran) taking over Lebanon and Jordan and other more moderate Middle Eastern states seeing turmoil, radical elements have the possibility of taking over the region and their number one desire is to wipe Israel off the face of the earth.
Many Americans have forgotten the 1973 war and the Oil Embargo that followed. We saw gas prices spike, gas shortages and economic chaos. Joseph Farah, Editor of World Net Daily and who has covered the Middle East since the 70’s says, “certainly since 1973 have things looked so dangerous and volatile there.”
The danger of a war in the Middle East is two fold for America. First is the actual war itself spreading. Israel is a nuclear power and Israel also has a tragic history. There are still some holocaust survivors alive in Israel and the truth of that tragedy has been burned into the Israeli psyche. They say ‘never again’ for a reason. If the armies of Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and possibly Jordan attack, Israel will fight back. If they have no choice, they will go nuclear. If Israel goes nuclear, it is hard to believe Iran will not be hit, as Iran is behind a lot of what is going on. If Iran and other Muslim countries are hit, is it also hard to believe that Muslim Pakistan will not use some of its nuclear weapons on Israel? This has the possibility of spinning out of control quickly.
The second danger is what would happen to America if radical Islamists take over the Middle East. The Suez Canal and the Straits of Hormuz are two of the key choke points for oil transport. If Islamic states cut oil off again, we will see immediate and catastrophic results. According to Dr. Jerome Corsi, a financial planning expert and author of Atomic Iran, if there is a cut off, oil would quickly shoot to $8 or $9 a gallon.
If gas shot to $8 or $9 a gallon, the American economy would be crippled. The ripple effect would send food prices through the roof. Joseph Farah says, “most Americans have no idea how quickly food shortages could develop in America – the world's breadbasket. We do not have large surpluses of food stored here. If oil prices spike or power outages occur, you would see panic about the basic necessities of life almost immediately. Store shelves would be empty. We haven't seen that in our lifetimes, but with an energy crises and lack of preparedness, we could find ourselves in a real mess.”
With the American economy simply limping along with 10% unemployment and with the real unemployment figure closer to 20%, a doubling or tripling of gas prices and the ripple effect through the rest of the economy would cripple America and probably end America’s status as the preeminent economic super power.
Barack Obama has consciously pushed an agenda in regard to Egypt that makes it much more likely that an Islamist government will eventually take over.
Unfortunately, with Presidential elections still more than eighteen months away, there is little we can do to stop an un-American President who is determined to work against America’s interests and do as much damage to America as he can. Even if this means a war in the Middle East.
This is part one of our series, Warning of War. Next: There is time to prepare. What to do.
