New Bern residents of Ward 1 got the opportunity Thursday evening to meet the three Board of Aldermen candidates hoping to represent them after the October municipal election.
The seat is up for grabs following Alderman Sabrina Bengel’s decision to run for mayor.
Dallas Blackiston, Alfred Barfield and Tony Bonnici spoke to about 60 people at the Chamber of Commerce Meeting Room on South Front Street.
The candidates were asked three questions that provided insights into their backgrounds, their passion for New Bern and the strengths and challenges facing the city.
Blackiston, 63, of 1507 N. Pasteur St., a retired Marine infantryman and pilot and retired community plans and liaison officer for Cherry Point air station, said it was the people that brought him back to New Bern in the 1990s.
“The wonder of it is not that we have found New Bern but New Bern has found us,” he said, alluding to the spirit of the city.
Blackiston said when it comes to challenges, his first is to get elected, causing the audience to laugh.
