In 2004, the State Legislature decided it should set local school calendars across North Carolina.
An excellent bill, sponsored by Representative Burr, would return control of the local school calendar to local board of education members: HB 175, "Putting Students First/Local Control".
It is the position of North Carolina FreedomWorks that this is an egregious violation of local control. It is local school board members who should be setting the school calendars for their school districts.
"Putting Students First/Local Control" was referred to the House Committee on Education where a committee vote was planned for two weeks ago. Speaker Tillis asked the bill be held until further notice. "Putting Students First/Local Control" is an important bill which we were assured would be heard in the House.
Please call AND e-mail Speaker Tillis: Politely request that he allow HB 175, "Putting Students First/Local Control" to be heard immediately in the House Committee on Education!
