NC HB 777: Marriage Protection Act

Marriage Cosponsors

Yesterday, the Marriage Protection Act was introduced in the NC House of Representatives. HB 777-Defense of Marriage would give the voters of North Carolina the opportunity to place the definition of marriage in the North Carolina Constitution. This would eliminate the possibility of redefinition by a future legislative action or by the state courts. It would remove the possibility of a scene like we saw in Maryland several weeks ago, where consideration of a bill to legalize "same-sex marriage" became the focal point of legislative activity for at least two weeks. Supporters of the same-sex "marriage" measure there say they will be back next session.

Contrast this with the scene in the 30 states where voters have placed a Marriage Protection Amendment in their state constitutions. There is a relative sea of tranquility, and everyone understands that marriage is the union of one man and one woman.

But back in North Carolina, HB 777 was introduced with far fewer cosponsors than we would have liked. Because several hundred bills were introduced yesterday, the deadline for House members to cosponsor bills was extended to 8:00 PM on Monday, April 11. So far, the number of cosponsors on the bill is about 40. We would like to see this number go up to at least 72, the number of votes it will take to reach the three-fifths majority required to pass the bill in the House, if every member is present and voting.

Has your representative cosponsored the Marriage Protection Amendment bill? Go here to see the list. If your members name is on the list, select their name, and then send them an email thanking them for cosponsoring. If their name is not on the list, go to the House member's link, find your representative, and then email or contact them by phone to politely request that they cosponsor and support HB 777-Defense of Marriage. The General Assembly's action on the Marriage Protection Amendment legislation is dependent upon the involvement of pro-family citizens in North Carolina, so act now!

  1. Yes, you're right -- absolutely, tell your representatives that they've done good, swimming against the tide of sensible, tolerant people. If we let gays marry, where will it end? HUMAN-ANIMAL MARRIAGES!
