1878: The first commercial telephone exchange was installed in New Haven, Connecticut, serving 21 subscribers with eight lines.

1915: Congress created the U.S. Coast Guard.

1916: Louis D. Brandeis was appointed to the Supreme Court by Woodrow Wilson, becoming the high court’s first Jewish member.

1934: America’s first ski lift opened in Woodstock, Vermont—a tow rope pulled by a Model T engine.

1986: The space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral. (Bennett & Cribb, 2010)
