What Obama won’t accept is that it is in the very nature of conservatism to question “progress” when progress means an expanding entitlement state and the degradation of traditional values that have helped keep society intact.
Obama believes it is irresponsible lunacy to threaten to shut the government down or not raise the debt ceiling in order to get one’s way. But for conservatives in Congress, what is lunacy is the longstanding willingness of moderate Republicans to shake hands on deals that have generated $16.4 trillion in debt and new bills totaling $1 trillion per year.
