Today I was remembering the famous Martin Luther King "I have a Dream" speech. The part that sticks with me was; "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." In reflecting of his lofty goal I cannot help but think that we are no closer today than were when those famous words held a audience rapt in August, 1963.
Dr. King did not talk about African Americans he spoke of "citizens of color....." and "Negro people" in America . He knew that his brothers and sisters of color were Americans. He said that "Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning". He knew that the hard part was ahead but that the American Negro could lift himself up, assert his god given rights and take his rightful place in American society.
Well, forty eight years later how far have we come? We have elected a black president not because of the content of his character but because of the color of his skin. How does our first black president, Barack Obama, honor the negro struggle for equality of opportunity? Barack Obama teaches that America is no longer a Christian nation, that the reason poor people are oppressed is that the mostly white rich have taken all the money so there is none left for the poor white or black. Obama teaches that because the rich have all the money the poor cannot raise themselves up through education and by their own hard work so he will level the playing field by taking from the rich and giving to the poor.
