Tea Party to “Deal in the District” with Local Representatives
Activists to Demand Real, Gimmick-Free Spending Cuts

NEW BERN, NC – On Thursday at noon local time, members of the Tea Party Patriots, the nation’s largest grassroots organization, will visit their representatives in the House of Representatives in district offices across the country to demand they and the so-called “Super Committee” show fiscal responsibility and make real spending cuts, not accounting gimmicks. Activists are encouraged to RSVP for the “Deal in the District” at http://www.teapartypatriots.org/event/deal-in-the-district/.

“Our local Patriots will be bringing their concerns in-person to their representatives in Congress to demand they listen to our demands for real spending cuts, now,” said Lynn Childs of Coastal Carolina Taxpayers Association. “It will be up to them to respond.”

“We want real cuts, not the phantom, fake cuts which are standard procedure for a Congress quick to posture as champions of debt and deficit reduction,” said Jenny Beth Martin, national coordinator of Tea Party Patriots.

“Reducing the government’s future spending is not a real cut,” said Mark Meckler, national coordinator of Tea Party Patriots. “Tea Party Patriots demand gimmick-free reductions in federal spending in the Super Committee’s November 23 plan. Activists across the country know we are headed the way of Greece if we do not immediately face fiscal reality.”

Activists are encouraged to tell their Member of Congress:

• We want REAL spending cuts. No more gimmicks, no more lies. Make real cuts and prioritize!
• Increasing spending more slowly than someone else is still increasing spending.
• When you increase spending by $5 and then cut $3, you haven’t made a cut. Your total spending is still $2 higher than it was before. This is a gimmick. Stop it. Now.
• If you say you’re cutting $3, then cut $3. This year. (And in case it’s not clear to your Rep., $3 is an example. A whole lot more than $3 needs to be cut!)
• All of the so-called cuts passed by Congress always get spread out over ten years, but this Congress has no authority over the next Congress and those cuts from this year can easily be overturned. Therefore, real cuts are cuts that occur within in the same fiscal year.
• Our country’s national debt has now surpassed our Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Now is the time for real cuts, not fake cuts.
• We see what is happening to Greece and Italy, and to the Eurozone in general. It is the responsibility of elected officials to make real cuts now.

Tea Party Patriots is a national grassroots coalition with more than 3,300 locally organized chapters and more than 15 million supporters nationwide. Tea Party Patriots is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting the principles of fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free markets. NC House Budget is a Return to Fiscal Responsibility

House Budget is a Return to Fiscal Responsibility
From the Office of the Speaker, May 2, 2011

Raleigh – “House Republican leaders held a press conference this afternoon to highlight their proposed budget to be voted on in this week. House Speaker Thom Tillis (R-Mecklenburg) said the budget represents a return to fiscal responsibility and is critical to North Carolina’s long-term economic sustainability.

“This budget confronts North Carolina’s fiscal problems in a responsible, sustainable way,” Tillis said. “It brings government expenses into line with state revenues, ends the practice of taxing our citizens to pay for state government’s appetite for spending, and restores over a billion dollars into the private sector to help create jobs.”

Rep. Harold Brubaker (R-Randolph), the House Appropriations Chair, said the budget includes intelligent spending reductions for state agencies that will reverse the trend of ever-expanding state government, with great benefits to North Carolina taxpayers. “This budget is one of the largest tax cuts in state history,” said Brubaker. “By allowing certain taxes to expire, we will provide more than a billion dollars to the private sector. We believe private businesses and individuals use their own money more effectively than state government.”

Brubaker also commented on specific proposals in the budget, including the funding of every teaching position in the state and giving local control to school boards and Superintendents, rather than directing spending from Raleigh. “As a rule, all areas of government experienced spending reductions that were accomplished through streamlining administration and operating costs whenever possible,” Brubaker said. “When positions had to be eliminated, we made sure the majority of those positions were vacant ones, to hold as many individuals harmless as we possibly could.”

Republicans commented on the transparency that has accompanied this budget from day one. “This is the most transparent budget process in recent memory,” Tillis said. All subcommittee documents and reports on the budget were posted online, and the budget has been available in its entirety online for five days before any budget votes have been taken on the House floor.

Republicans pointed out that they did not create the budget crisis they inherited when they were elected in November. “The bottom line is that for decades, politicians in Raleigh have raised taxes and increased spending, and that formula hasn’t worked,” Tillis said. “It’s time we give the private sector a chance and tighten the belt of state government. We need a fundamental change in the way state government approaches the economy and job creation, and this budget does just that.”

Finally, Tillis addressed the claims that some have made concerning potential job losses incurred in this budget. “Some voices in state government have floated hypothetical, inflated job loss numbers,” he said. “These numbers are just that: hypothetical. Based on countless conversations with outside experts and internal non-partisan fiscal research staff, we are convinced that this budget is a job creator, period.”

Sun Journal Letter to the Editor by CCTA Vice Chairman, Nancy Murdoch

DEBT

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our governments’ reckless fiscal policies.”

The above quote can be attributed to then-Sen. Barack Obama on March 16, 2006. It would appear that he is singing a different song these days.

Perhaps someone is celebrating a victory, but there’s no victory for the American people, especially for future generations. I figure it would be equivalent to a family earning $40,000 a year to make the decision to cut $400 from their annual budget in order to make ends meet. But it’s a moot point, as in the eight days that the budget was debated, $50 billion was borrowed — the cut was less than that.

The problem is not an income issue — it’s a spending issue. The poor and the wealthy are on the entitlement program. Tax cuts are given for raising vicuna and buying golf carts. Put in some solar panels and you get a tax break. Buy a hybrid vehicle and get a tax cut. The government subsidizes ethanol so we burn our food. The list seems never ending. Money is given to every special interest group able to gain access to an elected official. So much for having a government of and by the people; that’s a pipe dream now. And the sad part is that a number of our citizens refuse to see what is happening because so far their ox hasn’t been gored.

The problem didn’t originate in Washington, DC. Our states, counties and cities are playing the same game. The usual excuse is “if we don’t get it (the Federal money), then someone else will”. Do they think the money grows on the cherry trees in D.C.? For example, we have the Craven County “lottery.” Through some kind of unknown criteria, certain citizens get repairs made to their houses, and at times, even have said homes replaced — all on the taxpayers’ dime. The largesse of our elected officials is overwhelming. And I’m sure that this generosity with other people’s money is happening in every county in the United States.

There are no easy solutions, but if our country is to survive we better find one. Unfortunately, no political party has a monopoly on hypocrisy. Promises made while campaigning are soon forgotten, and reelection begins as soon as one enters office. We must diligently make our voices heard, and remember the words of Thomas Jefferson: “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”

WORLD NET DAILY--April 1, 2011

It's time for a tea-party insurrection

By Judson Phillips
© 2011

Wednesday evening, word began to leak out that John Boehner was going to make a deal with the Democrats. Instead of the $100 billion that the GOP had promised in cuts, there would only be around $33 billion in cuts, and the riders that would defund Obamacare, Planned Parenthood and NPR would be dealt with separately. In other words, they would be put in bills that have no chance of ever becoming law.

The time-honored Republican tradition of surrender is in full swing in Washington today.

The problem is, the American people and the tea-party movement did not send Republicans to Washington to surrender. We sent them to cut the budget.

In a couple of weeks, the government will hit the debt ceiling. In other words, the government will have borrowed all of the money it is allowed to borrow. It must either get authorization to borrow more money or stop spending.

John Boehner has demonstrated that he has no stomach for a fight and no commitment to stopping the insane spending that is sending this country into insolvency.

Two years ago, the tea-party movement arose with a simple message. We will not sit back quietly while the extreme liberal fringe spends this country into bankruptcy and poverty.

The Republicans talked a good game during the election season. Even after the election season, Boehner has talked about the need to cut spending. Wednesday, on his website, his staff posted an article about how high deficits and debt kills jobs. John, if you believe this, why aren't you cutting spending?

Besides the time-honored Republican tradition of surrender, another Republican tradition is also going on. Republicans come home and talk a great conservative game, and then when they get back to Washington, they forget their beliefs and fold to the Democrats.

No more.  It is time, again, for a tea-party insurrection.

We have two issues to fight. First is this budget. Reducing spending by $33 billion in the face of a $1.65 trillion deficit is not a cut; it is a joke.

We need to stop this budget and refuse to let the GOP off the hook unless there is a complete defunding of Obamacare, Planned Parenthood and NPR. The GOP ran on defunding Obamacare. For better or worse, we believed them. Now it is time for them to honor their promises to us.

The events of the last few days have made it painfully obvious that the GOP leadership is not serious about dealing with the out-of-control spending in Washington.

If they will not be serious about it, we must make them serious. We must use every tool at our disposal, calls, emails, tweets, faxes and personal visits to tell the Republicans not to raise the debt ceiling.

The Republicans in Congress have the budgetary "nuclear" option at their disposal! Let them know you expect them to use it by sending a message to all 241 GOP House members via the "No More Red Ink" campaign

When Washington hits the debt ceiling in a few days, our national debt will be 100 percent of our gross domestic product. In plain, non-lawyer English, this means that to pay off our national debt, it would take every cent of wealth America generates in 2011. There is a term for this; it is called insolvency.

The debt ceiling has been raised a number of times in the last 10 years. Each time, we are promised that fiscal discipline is right around the corner. The only thing that ends up being around the corner is yet another need to raise the debt ceiling.

Debt at 100 percent of GDP is something of a psychological marker. If we are not going to stop spending now, when will we?

Stopping the spending is actually simple. All we need are 218 House votes not to raise the debt ceiling, and Congress will have to balance the budget.

Will there be negative consequences if we do not raise the debt ceiling? Possibly. But what will be worse? Problems now or problems when the national debt is $28 trillion and we really are insolvent. Any problems we would have now pale in comparison to a national economic collapse.

It is time for the tea party to stand up and tell Congress, "No!" Do not spend any more money. Cut the spending, and under no circumstances raise the debt ceiling. Call, fax, email, tweet and visit your congressman's office, and tell them this.

At Tea Party Nation, one of our favorite sayings is: It is not enough to simply to replace bad leadership. We must put good leadership in its place. When we kicked Nancy Pelosi out of the speaker's chair, we replaced bad leadership. So far, we cannot say that we have put good leadership in its place.

We have a simple message to the GOP leadership. Cut the budget, do what you promised, and do not raise the debt ceiling. Do the right thing now, or we will do the right thing next year at the ballot box.

Still time to come to a Spending Revolt stop near you

Spending Revolt Educates Voters in Districts of General Assembly Leaders

Four-day tour hosts 17 rallies and town halls across North Carolina

The new Spending Revolt coalition – made up of taxpayers, families, business owners, and policy organizations – is working to educate citizens about how mounting federal spending is jeopardizing America’s future, and engage them in taking action against this reckless spending.

The Spending Revolt National Bus Tour is rolling across North Carolina for through Wednesday, Sept. 29th. There's still time to come to one of our stops!

The tour will highlight excessive spending by state legislative leaders by visiting the districts of: State House Majority Leader Hugh Holliman (Lexington), House Speaker Joe Hackney (Chapel Hill), and Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight (Washington) and Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Represenative Jimmy Love. (Sanford)

“Our General Assembly passed billions in new taxes to support their out of control spending habits, and it is important people speak out to stop the spending madness,” said Dallas Woodhouse, North Carolina State Director for Americans for Prosperity. “The high taxes from the out-of-control spending will make it difficult for families to afford to raise children or for entrepreneurs to open businesses in North Carolina.”

This rate of spending is irresponsible and unsustainable. It limits our economic growth and our ability to create new jobs. If we allow our elected officials to continue their spend-first, pay-later habits, we will face higher taxes, a higher cost of living, and a stagnant economy.

The Spending Revolt coalition seeks to permanently transform government spending through individual activism. Families across the country have been forced to make tough economic decisions. It is time for our elected officials to do the same.

“We urge everyone concerned about the loss of jobs and their family's financial well-being to attend this event. It's important that we express our displeasure with what politicians are doing to us,“ Lloyd Jennings, Chairman of AFP--Lee County, said.

DAVID HOGBERG, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY

America In Decline, Sowell Says, Citing Spending And Int'l Policy

By DAVID HOGBERG, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY

Posted 09/22/2010 07:17 PM ET

Early in his administration, President Reagan confidently asserted that "America's best days lie ahead." At the time it was true, but noted economist Thomas Sowell thinks it's no longer the case.

In his new book, "Dismantling America," Sowell argues that this nation is becoming one that many Americans no longer recognize as the country they grew up in or expected to pass on to their children and grandchildren. Rather, like Rome, America may be entering a prolonged period of decline.

Sowell sat down with IBD recently to discuss the political, social and economic forces that are leading to this decline and what, if anything, can reverse it.

IBD: What are the markers of national decline? What characteristics are different from a few decades ago that if they don't improve will lead to this country falling apart?

Sowell: One of the most serious current signs is the governing style of this administration, which is to impose as many things as possible on the public from the top down, without even letting them know what's going on.

Huge bills that fundamentally change the way the economy op erates have been rushed through Congress without hearings, without debate, and so fast that not even the members of Congress have a chance to read them. That's circumventing the notion of a constitutional government, and that's really at the heart of what the country is. The only analogy I can think of from history is when the Norman conquerors of England published their laws in French for an English-speaking nation. The utter arrogance — you're not even to know what the laws are until it is too late.

Reckless spending is another. The deficit and the national debt, as a percentage of GNP, is higher now than it was during any time except World War II. Moreover, once World War II was over we stopped the spending and started paying off the existing debt. We're going in exactly the opposite direction.

Of course, the one that trumps them all is on the international scene. That's where Iran is moving toward nuclear weapons. I'm just staggered at how little attention is being paid to that compared to frivolous things. If a nation with a record of sponsoring international terrorism gets nuclear weapons, that changes everything and it changes it forever.

Someday historians may wonder what were we thinking about when you look at the imbalance of power between the U.S. and Iran, and we sat there with folded hands and watched this happen, going through just enough motions at the United Nations to lull the public to sleep. That, I think, is the biggest threat.

IBD: Do you think the Israelis will take out Iran's nuclear program if they will be condemned by the "international community" and can't rely on backing from the Obama administration?

Sowell: If the choice is between condemnation or annihilation, I think they will go for condemnation. There may be reasons why it isn't feasible, but it's a tremendous choice to leave on them.

IBD: What has Obama done to hasten our decline?

Sowell: He has affronted our allies, but he's very clever about it. He's done it in ways that the general public is unlikely to notice. But it is in ways that people in other countries cannot mistake at all, such as the downgrading of the visits of the prime minister of Britain or Israel. At one time the visit of the prime minister of Great Britain meant a state dinner, a press conference and so on.

His first foreign policy gambit was to fly to Russia and offer to renege on the American commitment to put a missile shield in Eastern Europe, in hopes of getting Russian cooperation with the United States. All he really got out of that was a demonstration of his amateurishness and of his willingness to sell out allies in hopes of winning over enemies. That ploy was tried in the 1930s and didn't work all that well.

IBD: One big trend leading to America's decline that came through in the book was how politicians and activists use rhetoric.

Sowell: It's partly that, but it is also the education system has not taught people how to see through rhetoric. Somewhere Oliver Wendell Holmes says that the purpose of education is to create a mind that cannot be humbugged by words. Well, that is not the purpose of American education now. Much of the humbugging by words takes place inside the educational institutions themselves. Students are not generally taught to see both sides of an issue and learn how to analyze in such ways to see what the differences are and how you would sort it all out. Instead they're given one side and they're told that one side is it.

Schools all around the country have shown Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth." But I doubt that one-tenth of students have seen the British Channel 4 production called "The Great Global Warming Swindle."

IBD: So if children are taught only one side as unquestioned truth, what's the value of experience and wisdom?

Sowell: At one time students were taught, "You're young, you're inexperienced, you have a lot to learn. It's not up to you to make sweeping conclusions about society." Today that is not the message. Today when I see young kids, sometimes elementary students, carrying banners for some crusade, someone ought to tell them that you don't even know anything. Or you hear they are writing letters to the president on nuclear policy and so on. Within the past week, I got a letter from a high school senior who was about to inform me about economics in general and about the reason why there was a Great Depression and why it is necessary that Obama does the things he does. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. But students are encouraged to think that way.

IBD: You note in your book that Americans take a lot of good things in this country for granted. How does that hasten our decline?

Sowell: You have to have a sense that freedom is always under siege, and not just by people who don't believe in freedom but by people who have their own agendas and either don't know or don't care that those agendas mean reducing other people's freedom. So if you don't have a sense of the danger from those sources, you're going to face a steady erosion of freedom, because people put their own agendas ahead of other people's freedom.

IBD: The "Vision of the Anointed" — the idea that there is an anointed elite qualified to run other people's lives — surely that must be playing a role in the dismantling of America.

Sowell: Oh, absolutely! And I think no one believes in that vision more so than Barack Obama, with the possible exception of Michelle Obama. They are the ones who know what we need. The very idea that anyone would take over someone else's medical care and think that it can be run from Washington by bureaucrats is just staggering. There needs to be a healthy fear of "making a difference" in areas where you have no expertise. Some years ago I was in a hotel, and the hotel clerk called me up and asked, "Is this Dr. Sowell?" I said yes. He said, "There is a pregnant woman downstairs in labor. Would you please come downstairs and help with the delivery?" I was absolutely appalled. That ought to be the reaction of most people when presented with an opportunity to "make a difference" in an area where they don't know what they are talking about.

IBD: How does the housing crisis embody some of the trends in the book?

Sowell: Everything that was done wrong in the past has been continued and escalated in the present. The recent so-called financial reform act left out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It's like Hamlet without the Prince of Denmark. Fannie and Freddie are two institutions that are in the production and distribution of moral hazard.

Nothing will increase risk more than by shifting it to somebody else. If I thought the government would back me up, I'd go into the commodities market and put a million dollars into soybean futures. Knowing that the government is not going to back me up, I won't go within 100 miles of the commodities market.

Politicians know that politically it pays to have the taxpayers pick up the bill (as with Fannie and Freddie). People ask me sometimes, "Why do politicians keep making the same mistakes? Don't they ever learn?" And I reply, "They do learn! They learn they can get away with it. That's what they learn."

IBD: What is the "fallacy of fairness"?

Sowell: Most people would say that the government should treat everybody alike, judge them by the same standards, reward or punish them according to the same rules. That we can pretty much agree on.

But there is a more esoteric notion of fairness. Is it fair if one person is born into the world in circumstances that virtually guarantee their failure and others are born into circumstances that virtually guarantee their success? That kind of fairness is not social injustice, because society doesn't create it and society can't do much about it.

In my case I can see it pretty vividly. I'm one of those people who was separated from my siblings in infancy, grew up not knowing they existed and learned about them later on. We were all raised by poor people with very little education. But the family in which I was raised was determined that, although they had no education, I should have an education. I remember what a fuss was made when I was promoted to the seventh grade. I was taken aback by it and someone said to me, "You've now gone further than any of us."

Now contrast that with my younger brother raised down in North Carolina. One day, as a teenager, someone noticed he had on his Sunday clothes in the middle of the week. When asked why, he said he was graduating from high school that day. No one came to see him graduate or thought much of it, even though none of the people in his family had ever gone to high school. So he had to do it all on his own .

I had a sister who was also raised hundreds of miles away. And when she went to Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., which was an elite school, there was resentment in her adoptive family. The reason was that the biological daughters in that family were nowhere near smart enough to go to that school.

Sociologists would come along and lump all three of these families together. But the kinds of things that matter are the things that politicians and bureaucrats can't do much about.

Now, you can create scholarships, tutoring programs and so on. But you have to recognize that the values that the kids have are the crucial things that will make or break them.

IBD: In your book you have two columns titled "Empathy Versus the Law," and you discuss the rule of law vs. the rule of lawyers and judges. Explain how that is leading to our decline.

Sowell: Empathy is one of the weasel words of our time. It is a prettier word than bias, but it means the same thing. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor with those firefighters in Connecticut gave a free demonstration what empathy and bias mean. And yet not only was she confirmed; there were Republicans who announced going in that they were going to confirm her.

One of the things that happens is that people have no sense of what the law is supposed to be. It's not a matter of righting wrongs.

In the days of the French Revolution, "representatives on missions" were sent around the country to right wrongs. They had the power to overrule any laws or local officials. They carried their own guillotines with them. That notion of law, that's the direction those who are pushing judicial activism are going.

There was a time when we understood the judge's job is not to have empathy; his job is to carry out the law as written. And if it was a bad law it was up to the legislature to change it.

IBD: What do you think of the Tea Party movement? Could it reverse our decline?

Sowell: I'm sure it's one of the elements. I think one of the things more important than the Tea Parties is that so many people who were not political activists before have been spurred into action by the kind of things that have been done and the dangers they see. The biggest danger is not to see the danger. There are increasing numbers of people who see the danger. There are increasing numbers of people according to the polls who have no confidence in the media. I was delighted that Newsweek magazine is having so much trouble because they richly deserve it. There was one time I wondered who they were going to put on the cover once the Obamas were gone. So there are those signs, and as the great philosopher Yogi Berra said, "It's not over till it's over."

It’s the Spending, Stupid

September 24, 2010 by Chip Wood

(NOTE:  Congress has now put off acting on renewing the Bush tax cuts until after the election, in an effort to get re-elected first, then rest assured they will put the screws to us!  PLEASE SUPPORT CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATES NOW--AND GET OUT AND VOTE NOVEMBER 2nd!~Lynn)
Now there’s a message I hope you’ll see and hear a lot between now and election day — on bumper stickers on the backs of cars, in email messages and letters to the editor, on radio talk shows and a hundred other places; including in front of every polling place in the country, if that were allowed.
Please do your share to pass it around — including sending this column to a few dozen friends and family members who should read it. I wish I could take credit for the slogan — an obvious twist on the James Carville/Bill Clinton message two decades ago — but I can’t. It was the headline in a Daniel Henninger column last week in The Wall Street Journal.

Henninger began by quoting the president at a town-hall meeting in Fairfax, Va., where our Obfuscator in Chief attempted to explain the election victories of various Tea Party candidates.

“They saw the Recovery Act. They saw TARP. They saw the auto bailout. And they look at these and think, ‘God, all these huge numbers adding up.’ So they’re right to be concerned about that.”

Right. You feel our pain. I think we’ve heard that before.

Of course, the president could also have mentioned new deficits of more than a trillion dollars a year, two $3-trillion budgets since he took office, and a trillion-dollar healthcare entitlement shoved down our throats. Voters aren’t just “concerned,” Mr. President. Many of them have had it up to here with bloated, wasteful government spending. They are, to quote a wonderful old movie, mad as h**l and they’re not going to take it anymore.

If you consider yourself one of the “they” referred to above, you can take heart from the latest poll results. Last week the Rasmussen poll queried potential voters. Nearly seven out of 10 — an outstanding 68 percent of the total — said they want smaller government and lower taxes, even if that comes at the cost of fewer services.

The number was highest, of course, among people who identified themselves as Republicans, with 88 percent saying they wanted spending reduced. Democrats scored the lowest, but a still impressive 44 percent in favor of cuts. And where did the independents fall? Some 74 percent joined the anti-spending crowd.

My liberal friends, you’ve got trouble. Big trouble. And not just in River City. I’m not sure there’s a lie big enough, or a smear nasty enough, to keep you from getting your heads handed to you this fall.

f I were running against an incumbent, one of the first questions I would ask is, where were you when the tax cuts expired? And why did you do nothing to preserve them?

In case you’ve missed all the hullabaloo, here’s what’s happening… or, to be accurate, not happening.

Back in 2001, blessed by a healthy Republican majority in the House and Senate, George Bush persuaded Congress to approve some of the largest tax cuts in our country’s history. The Democrats couldn’t stop the legislation, but they very cleverly exacted a condition: The tax cuts would expire on Dec. 31, 2010, unless Congress extended them.

We’re getting awfully close to the witching hour and thus far, Congress hasn’t done a thing… except expend a lot of hot air. If Congress does nothing over the next three months — and usually, I’ve got to admit, that’s exactly what I wish the esteemed men and women who represent us would do — you and every other taxpayer in this country will see a lot more money taken from your pocket next year and given to Uncle Sam.

In fact, it will amount to the largest tax increase in U.S. history. And it will impact almost every taxpayer in the country. The front-page story in my local paper said it all: “Unless Congress acts, almost all earning levels will be paying more — from the wealthy to the working poor.”

And please don’t let anyone sucker you into believing that what’s at stake here are “tax breaks for the wealthy.” That is a bunch of hokum. Listen to this: “A typical family of four with a household income of $50,000 a year would have to pay $2,900 more in taxes in 2011, according to a new analysis by Deloitte Tax LLP, a tax-consulting firm,” according to a story by The Associated Press.

But if you do make more than Obama’s $250,000 threshold, get ready to be really hammered. Starting on Jan. 1, 2011, the top marginal income-tax rate is set to increase to 39.6 percent from 35 percent. The phase-out of itemized deductions will raise that rate to 40.8 percent. Now that Obamacare has passed there will also be a 3.8 percent healthcare tax, starting in 2013. So the total Federal tax rate for our highest earners will be 44.6 percent.

But, in fact, it will be even higher. When the Bush tax cuts expire, taxes on stock dividends and capital gains will go from 15 percent to 20 percent. President Barack Obama has said he would like to see them raised as high as 28 percent.

And here’s an astounding fact that is known (or should be) to every member of Congress: Whenever Congress has increased taxes on capital gains in the past, actual tax collections have gone down.  (PROVEN FACT)

That’s right: When government raises the tax rate, actual receipts drop. When you think about it, it’s not hard to understand why. Capital gains only occur when someone sells an investment and reports making a profit on it. But most of the time, they don’t have to sell. Given the mood of the country right now, how many investors will sit on their holdings rather than give more and more of them to a greedy, grasping, irresponsible government?

Oh, and there’s one more monstrosity racing down the road toward us. That is the re-imposition of the dreaded estate tax. Beginning next year the estate tax is slated to return to 55 percent on inheritances above $1 million. Right now, because Congress did nothing last year, the estate tax is zero. That explains the delirious joy on the part of the heirs of such billionaires as John Kluge and George Steinbrenner.

By dying this year, they saved their families over a billion dollars in taxes. Imagine — their heirs got all the money, not Uncle Sam. No wonder the distributionists among us are having apoplexy.

Where does all that money go? Part of it makes certain that Federal employees now make, on average, more than twice as much as workers in the private sector. That’s the startling conclusion of an analysis by USA Today, which found that anyone lucky enough to be gobbling at the Federal trough receives, on average, some $41,791 in benefits a year.

That’s in addition to a salary, on average, of $81,258 a year. Private workers, in comparison, earn only $61,051 in total compensation.

Let me repeat the first number, to make sure you grasp it. The average benefits of a Federal employee, above and beyond the salary he or she actually gets paid, comes to $41,791 a year.

If that isn’t enough to make you want to throw some tea into Boston Harbor — and a whole bunch of incumbents along with it, I don’t know what will.

Until next time, keep some powder dry.

Daily Policy Digest: Economic Issues

The Naked Stimulus: Why Savings Stimulate More Than Spending

Despite the struggling economy, President Obama argues that his stimulus package is producing gross domestic product (GDP) growth that is far better than the disaster that would have ensued without the $862 billion in emergency spending. The reason, he and his advisors maintain, is that what really counts is spending -- the more the better, at least for now, says Shawn Tully, Fortune Magazine's senior editor-at-large.

But the administration's policy has a fundamental flaw. It's impossible to raise GDP by borrowing from one group of people, who would otherwise save that money, and transfer it to another group of people (and the government) to spend. Savings, in the short term, have precisely the same impact on national income as spending, says Tully.

GDP measures all spending on all the goods and services that America produces.

Savings translate, dollar for dollar, into a major component of that total spending: investment.

All the money that the administration successfully moves from savings to consumption simply channels one type of spending to another, in precisely offsetting amounts.

The GDP does not change when the government drains investment to lift consumption.

Over long periods, savings -- not consumer spending -- finance the investments in mainframes, robots and other capital equipment that enhance productivity and drive economic growth.

So what would have happened if we'd had no stimulus at all?

First, private investment would be higher, because of the bigger pool of savings -- a positive sign for the future.

Second, the United States wouldn't have to borrow nearly as much from abroad.

Gateway Pundit

Thanks Barack… US Debt Is More Than All Money In the World

Posted by Jim Hoft on Saturday, September 11, 2010

Thanks Barack.

The US now owes more money than all of the money in the world combined.
Kevin D. Williamson at National Review Online reported:

I have argued that the real national debt is about $130 trillion. Let’s say I’m being pessimistic. Forbes, in a 2008 article, came up with a lower number: $70 trillion. Let’s say the sunny optimists at Forbes got it right and I got it wrong.

For perspective: At the time that 2008 article was written, the entire supply of money in the world (“broad money,” i.e., global M3, meaning cash, consumer-account deposits, checkable accounts, CDs, long-term deposits, travelers’ checks, money-market funds, the whole enchilada) was estimated to be just under $60 trillion. Which is to say: The optimistic view is that our outstanding obligations amount to more than all of the money in the world.

Global GDP in 2008? Also about $60 trillion. Meaning that the optimistic view is that our federal obligations outpace the entire annual economic output of human civilization.

So, John Boehner wants to roll spending back to where it was in the last year of the Bush administration. Okay, great. Nice start.

The Obama-Pelosi economic plan resulted in a cumulative 7.5 million jobs deficit. By every objective measure the democrat’s Trillion dollar stimulus bomb was a complete disaster.

Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi tripled the national deficit last year by nearly a trillion dollars – something unheard of in our nation’s history.

After an unheard of record deficit last year of $1.4 Trillion the economy is on track to experience a $1.3 Trillion deficit this year.

Instead of focusing on the economy the past two years the radicals in Washington beat up on business and rammed through an unpopular nationalized health care entitlement program.

Michele Bachmann Launches National Tea Party Tele-Townhall

Michele Bachmann Launches National Tea Party Tele-Townhall--Bachmann Calls for Nancy Pelosi To Enter 12 Step Program For Her Addiction To Job-Killing Spending

With Nancy Pelosi’s declaration that Congress will be reconvening to authorize billions of dollars of spending the government doesn’t have, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann announced she will be holding a National Tea Party Tele-Townhall to listen to the response of the American people.

“Nancy Pelosi has already spent over $3.6 trillion on so-called ‘stimulus’ spending and now she wants to give in excess of $20 billion to politicians to spend on even more big government,” Congresswoman Bachmann said. “She is clearly addicted to spending other people’s money and is rushing members of Congress back to Washington to get a spending fix. Could it be she wanted to ensure she has distributed taxpayer-subsidized ‘walking around money’ to public employee unions across the country prior to the election to desperately try to save her already endangered majority? The same public employee unions which will provide the boots on the ground to re-elect a Democrat majority in the mid-term elections, where Speaker Pelosi’s grip on the gavel is in serious doubt?”

“After only a few days away from D.C., Democrats in Congress are determined to not let even a week go by without spending additional billions of dollars for even more big government programs. That’s why I’ll be joining with other leaders to hold a National Tea Party Tele-Townhall to listen to Americans who have had enough of the out-of-control spending and endless tax increases.”

People interested in participating in the National Tea Party Tele-Townhall on Monday, August 9 at 6 pm central – the same time Pelosi will be convening Congress - can sign up on www.michelebachmann.com/sign-up-for-the-national-tea-party-tele-townhall . Over one million people will be invited to participate, and is expected to be the largest tele-townhall ever held by members of Congress.

The Cloward-Piven Plan ... How to Overwhelm the System

by WAYNE ALLYN ROOT: Overwhelm the system

Barach Obama is no fool. He is not incompetent. To the contrary, he is brilliant. He knows exactly what he's doing. He is purposely overwhelming the U.S. economy to create systemic failure, economic crisis and social chaos -- thereby destroying capitalism and our country from within.

Barack Obama is my college classmate (Columbia University, class of '83). As Glenn Beck correctly predicted from day one, Obama is following the plan of Cloward & Piven, two professors at Columbia University. They outlined a plan to socialize America by overwhelming the system with government spending and entitlement demands. Add up the clues below. Taken individually they're alarming. Taken as a whole, it is a brilliant, Machiavellian game plan to turn the United States into a socialist/Marxist state with a permanent majority that desperately needs government for survival ... and can be counted on to always vote for bigger government. Why not? They have no responsibility to pay for it.

-- Universal health care. The health care bill had very little to do with health care. It had everything to do with unionizing millions of hospital and health care workers, as well as adding 15,000 to 20,000 new IRS agents (who will join government employee unions). Obama doesn't care that giving free health care to 30 million Americans will add trillions to the national debt. What he does care about is that it cements the dependence of those 30 million voters to Democrats and big government. Who but a socialist revolutionary would pass this reckless spending bill in the middle of a depression?

-- Cap and trade. Like health care legislation having nothing to do with health care, cap and trade has nothing to do with global warming. It has everything to do with redistribution of income, government control of the economy and a criminal payoff to Obama's biggest contributors. Those powerful and wealthy unions and contributors (like GE, which owns NBC, MSNBC and CNBC) can then be counted on to support everything Obama wants. They will kick-back hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions to Obama and the Democratic Party to keep them in power. The bonus is that all the new taxes on Americans with bigger cars, bigger homes and businesses helps Obama "spread the wealth around."

-- Make Puerto Rico a state. Why? Who's asking for a 51st state? Who's asking for millions of new welfare recipients and government entitlement addicts in the middle of a depression? Certainly not American taxpayers. But this has been Obama's plan all along. His goal is to add two new Democrat senators, five Democrat congressman and a million loyal Democratic voters who are dependent on big government.

-- Legalize 12 million illegal immigrants. Just giving these 12 million potential new citizens free health care alone could overwhelm the system and bankrupt America. But it adds 12 million reliable new Democrat voters who can be counted on to support big government. Add another few trillion dollars in welfare, aid to dependent children, food stamps, free medical, education, tax credits for the poor, and eventually Social Security.

-- Stimulus and bailouts. Where did all that money go? It went to Democrat contributors, organizations (ACORN), and unions -- including billions of dollars to save or create jobs of government employees across the country. It went to save GM and Chrysler so that their employees could keep paying union dues. It went to AIG so that Goldman Sachs could be bailed out (after giving Obama almost $1 million in contributions). A staggering $125 billion went to teachers (thereby protecting their union dues). All those public employees will vote loyally Democrat to protect their bloated salaries and pensions that are bankrupting America. The country goes broke, future generations face a bleak future, but Obama, the Democrat Party, government, and the unions grow more powerful. The ends justify the means.

-- Raise taxes on small business owners, high-income earners, and job creators. Put the entire burden on only the top 20 percent of taxpayers, redistribute the income, punish success, and reward those who did nothing to deserve it (except vote for Obama). Reagan wanted to dramatically cut taxes in order to starve the government. Obama wants to dramatically raise taxes to starve his political opposition.

With the acts outlined above, Obama and his regime have created a vast and rapidly expanding constituency of voters dependent on big government; a vast privileged class of public employees who work for big government; and a government dedicated to destroying capitalism and installing themselves as socialist rulers by overwhelming the system.

Add it up and you've got the perfect Marxist scheme -- all devised by my Columbia University college classmate Barack Obama using the Cloward and Piven Plan.

John Hood's Daily Journal -- Life of the Party

CAROLINA JOURNAL ONLINE

John Hood's Daily Journal

Life of the Party, By John Hood

March 30, 2010

RALEIGH – If the Tea Party movement consists of a bunch of extremists, prone to violence and potty mouths as Obama partisans and the clueless news media have been trying to assert over the past week, then I guess that means most Americans are extremists, too.

You see, most voters agree with the tenets and activism of the Tea Party movement. They think ObamaCare will be disastrous and want it repealed and replaced with a real reform plan. They think taxes are too high, not too low. They think the federal government’s massive operating deficits and its nearly $100 trillion in unfunded entitlement liabilities are not an economic stimulus, as liberals apparently believe, but represent a clear and present danger to American prosperity and to representative government itself.

Tea Party activists believe that members of Congress are secretive, corrupt, and out of touch. According to a new Rasmussen Research survey, the American public agrees. While only 30 percent of respondents believe that the average member of Congress has a better understanding of the issues facing the country than the average Tea Party activist, 52 percent of likely U.S. voters see it the other way – that the average Tea Party activist has a better understanding of the issues than the average member of Congress.

If you think that average Americans informing themselves, exercising their rights, and challenging the pretensions of an unpopular class of reckless politicians are properly thought of as extremists, that says more about you than it says about them. It suggest that you are the extremist.

As for the rest of us, we see the Tea Party movement as a grassroots explosion of righteous anger and resolute activism. We see it as a portent of the political future. We see it as a last, great hope for preventing America from abandoning its constitutional traditions of individual liberty and limited government – and descending into a European-style welfare state that will sap our economic vitality and curtail our freedom.

Whether you like the Tea Party movement or not, you’re going to hear more about it in the coming weeks. Last April, dozens of spontaneously organized Tea Party organizations held rallies in communities across North Carolina to protest the fiscal irresponsibility of their elected officials in Raleigh and Washington. This year, from what I’m hearing and seeing, there will be another round of Tea Party protests on or around April 15th – sending the message that ObamaCare is unacceptable, that spending America into bankruptcy is unacceptable, and that we will not let the political activism of millions of concerned Americans be smeared by biased and credulous news reporting.

Here in North Carolina, the steps necessary to restrain and reform our government aren’t hard to formulate:

• No more job-killing taxes. Policymakers need to balance state and local budgets by setting firm priorities and focusing scarce resources on government’s core responsibilities.

• No more job-killing regulations. North Carolina should impose new rules on private economic activity only when the expected health or safety benefits exceed the expected costs, and when there is no less-restrictive alternative that can accomplish the same goal.

• Subject services to competition. Rather than throwing more money into government education or health care monopolies, North Carolina should give its citizens more power to choose the services that best meet their needs – and private firms more freedom to compete for willing business without undue burdens and restrictions.

• Embrace innovation. Rather than assuming that North Carolina needs to do the same old things the same old way, we should welcome new technologies and organizational forms – including the consolidation of state agencies, the expansion of distance learning, and the use of new ways to design, build, operate, and pay for the infrastructure North Carolina needs to sustain growth.

Be it at the federal, state, or local levels, the problems that currently plague us cannot be solved simply by taxing more, spending more, and borrowing more. In the coming weeks, thousands of North Carolinians will take to the streets – both in their own communities and in their state and national capitals – to send this message clearly to the political class.

Perhaps this time the message will be heard.
